Crashes every time I open it up on 10.9.5.
The trolls are a small, small percentage of users but some of the loudest.
Re:What Ticketmaster is doing about technical debt on Tuesday June 30, 2015 @05:58PM (#9808696)
What is Ticketmaster doing about outrageous fees?
Re:Own-Mailbox, the first 100% confidential mailbox on Monday June 29, 2015 @11:04AM (#9798515)
100% confidential? Nothing is 100% confidential if it's connected to the Internet.
Nice. Are you using the Tessaract OCR lib at the core of the extraction?
Re:Ask HN: Is using Adblock unethical? on Thursday January 10, 2013 @03:45PM (#5039622)
I always use Adblock. I also use Do Not Track, dot.js (to modify pages), Tampermonkey, Ghostery when needed and other extensions / scripts. I also clear my cookies upon closing the browser.

I don't care that I'm an "asshole". When I show less technical people how to block advertisements, the first thing they usually say is, "thank you!" or "can I buy you a beer?". I never met one person (other than people in marketing) that have said, "No, I'd prefer to see advertisements over content".

Congrats to PhantomJS!

CasperJS is built on top of PhantomJS and adds some cool assertions: http://casperjs.org/

Re:If you're using Node.js, you're doing life wrong on Friday February 03, 2012 @12:21PM (#3547954)
It's posts like this that make me embarrassed to be a programmer. The author basically states, "Node.js is not a good fit for my company, therefor everyone using node.js is wasting their time." It's generalizations like this that just blow my mind.

I don't go around saying, "Snickers is the worst candybar, therefor anyone who eats a Snickers is wasting their time."

I bet the author is not a pleasant person to work with.

Re:The next SOPA on Saturday January 21, 2012 @01:15PM (#3494162)
"Eventually, we will lose."

That's such a pessimistic statement. With that attitude, some SOPA-like Bill will pass. As an example, if MLK had that attitude, the whole Civil Rights movement would've failed.

Re:Hacker News Blacking Out Logo on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @08:30AM (#3479519)
OooooOooo... A black background with grey text! That's some pretty radical protesting right there. Should've turned off HN for 12 hours instead.
Re:This Photograph Is Not Free on Wednesday January 11, 2012 @09:42AM (#3451922)
Some people take photographs because they just like taking photographs, like myself. If someone happened to use one of my photos, then so be it. I'm not in it to make money. I'm in it because I like the process of taking a photo, as well as editing it. After that, I'm done with it. Steal it! Remix it! Open source it!

All my photos on flickr have a Creative Commons license of "Attribution, Noncommercial, Share Alike". My photos have ended up on some great web sites: Rolling Stone, Yes Magazine, NY Magazine, city newspaper sites, random blogs, etc... I didn't receive one dime from them, but I did receive a link back to my flickr page in the photo credit. Even when they offered compensation, I turned them down.

Some people think that if they have fancy gear, they'll take better photos. This is not always the case. Photography is more art than having great gear. Does having a sweet ass laptop make you a better programmer? I don't have super fancy gear: A Canon T1i, and some pretty decent 2.8 lenses (Tamron 2.8 17-50, Sigma 2.8 70-200, Lens Baby, Canon 50mm 1.8). Any camera can take an award winning photo (I work for the largest stock photography company and have seen this to be true more times than not).

Re:Why isn't hacker news a subreddit on reddit.com? on Sunday October 23, 2011 @11:07AM (#3146248)
I love hacker news as well as reddit. I have noticed a trend though, and I'm unsure if it's intentional, or just a result of how both sites are used: 1.) The stories on Hacker News are mainly about start ups (not all, but most). 2.) The users of /r/javascript, or /r/programming (and other programming related subreddits) are very helpful when it comes to finding answers to programming related questions.

I find myself pursuing reddit more often because I am not involved in a start up, or have any interest in starting a start up. I just like to code, and reddit fuels my interest more than hacker news does in that regard. I'm sure I'll get "downvoted" to hell for saying that.

Re:I Hate My Smartphone on Wednesday October 19, 2011 @10:50PM (#3133206)
Humans are great at adapting to their surroundings. If you give them fancy gadgets, or a new way of doing something that is innovative, they'll forget how they did "x" before they had the new fancy "widget".
Re:I Hate My Smartphone on Wednesday October 19, 2011 @10:48PM (#3133197)
Some of the best music that came out of the 50s was recorded on tape, then overdubbed, then overdubbed again. Creativity shouldn't be judged based on the medium.
Re:I Hate My Smartphone on Wednesday October 19, 2011 @10:46PM (#3133189)
Well, like I said, it's good to have choices. I carry around a point and shoot all the time. There's always one in the car. There's also one in my laptop bag. I routinely have a DSLR near me 90% of the time... then again, I'm a bit of a photography nut. That might explain it :)

I guess I'm an "audiophile" when it comes to photos.

I also have a hard time dealing with 192kbps mp3s. That damn cymbal compression sound is like nails on a chalk board.

Re:I Hate My Smartphone on Wednesday October 19, 2011 @10:00PM (#3133046)
In my case, I have a Garmin for GPS, which is much more reliable than any phone GPS I've used.

If you compare the quality of a point and shoot digital camera vs a smart phone, the digital camera will blow it out of the water. For me, it's about the quality of the photo, not the convenience.

We're lucky to have choices. That's the beauty of it.

Assumptions are the root of all evil.
Re:How do you delete your Hacker News account? on Sunday September 18, 2011 @02:37PM (#3010909)
It'd be nice if there were a terms of service stating this when signing up.
Re:SocketStream: a real-time web framework for Node.js on Monday June 27, 2011 @10:55AM (#2701493)
I get down voted because I prefer native Javascript to Coffee Script? Wow.
Re:SocketStream: a real-time web framework for Node.js on Thursday June 23, 2011 @04:40PM (#2689778)
Coffee Script. Geez. This is interesting, but too bad for the use of Coffee Script. Yes, I realize I could convert all the files to .js and be a happy camper.
Re:iPhone vs. Droid GPS signal quality on Sunday July 18, 2010 @08:09PM (#1527154)
I have a Droid incredible. Here is my experience:

If you have "use wireless networks" and Gps turned on, things don't always work right. If you have just Gps turned on the experience seems to work better.

I live in Madison, wi and having both turned on makes my phone think I'm in appleton (100 miles away). Using Gps, my location is reported correctly.

When out of Madison, and turning on "use wireless networks", things work correctly.

I have no idea why!
