They have written their own UI framework. Probably the reason they are biased against other frameworks

Precisely the reason I stopped using phone in the toilet.

Run it on Raspberry Pi. It brings down electric consumption significantly.

>Self-hosting stuff is awesome if you have the skills.

>I have been on a mission for the last 2 years to replace as many subscriptions as possible with self-hosted solutions.

I have been doing the same for quite some time now but it's only recently I realized all these subscriptions services are just making rich richer. We should encourage self hosting as much as possible. I mean why should we pay huge corporations more money just for storage?

Re:Earth's clouds are shrinking, boosting global warming on Saturday April 05, 2025 @10:19AM (#43593748)
Humanity has tendency to do things wrong and then decades later realize that what we were doing was awful to the planet.
Re:Earth's clouds are shrinking, boosting global warming on Saturday April 05, 2025 @10:18AM (#43593734)
Do you mean my dog or other animals are responsible for this? Humans are the only species that are capable of modifying the environment.

I don't necessarily agree with GP's comment but they do have a valid point.

> We could solve this problem in a few years with technology if we really wanted to.

Everybody wants to solve the problem with technology. What if, the solution is just plain old hard work like planting trees, conservation, better recycling, better laws that help in saving ecosystem. But who would do that. So let's keep on creating problems with technology and then solve them with more technology.

This is behind paywall
Re:Quadlet: Running Podman containers under systemd on Monday March 24, 2025 @12:08AM (#43457724)
To be fair podlet functionalities don't require constant updates which is not true in case of podman compose.

Podlet is a helper. In the long run its better to work with quadlets.

Re:The Frontend Treadmill on Thursday March 20, 2025 @11:46AM (#43424872)
I build simple applications for personal use like issue tracker, day planner, etc,. By default if you ask Claude it will generate React for frontend but I ask it to use HTML/CSS/JS instead. Because as a backend developer that makes sense to me. I find it hard to read the react code and want to avoid having dependency on npm.

It's surprising how well the core technology works without fancy front end frameworks. Claude does most of the grunt work related to CSS/JS allowing me to focus on more interesting things. I only have to do few minor changes here and there which I am happy to do.

I am a Dvorak user and this happens to me too. I thought it happens when I'm stressed out.

It's crazy how many people just read the headline and choose to comment or upvote these links.

Also, why the title is not same as the article? It makes no sense.

You mentioned you have been developing Indie products since 2005 in your about section. Can I read about this somewhere?

It sounds good but in reality people end up spending time messing around with config files and annotations.

This. When I look at code I should just be able to follow it and know what's happening. The whole annotation magic and config files makes it hard to understand the flow of things.

I think people who want to view ideas should pay instead of people who submit ideas.

Re:A story on home server security on Sunday January 05, 2025 @10:08AM (#42602224)
Podman supports kubernetes YAML or the quadlets option. It's fairly easy to convert docker-compose to one of these.

Nowaday I just ask genAI to convert docker-compose to one of the above options and it almost always works.

Re:A story on home server security on Sunday January 05, 2025 @09:01AM (#42601779)
And this was one of the reason why I switched to Podman. I haven't looked back since.

Re:Show HN: Non SaaS – Directory of Non SaaS Apps on Thursday August 01, 2024 @12:06AM (#41126057)
A lot of Software developers create something which is successful to some extent. They take this minor success very seriously and want to continue working on it for rest of their lives. They don't believe in their own ability to create another successful product. Also like everyone else they don't like to work from 9 to 5. So they enable subscription for what trivial problem they have solved. The problem with this approach is sooner or later people figure out that they don't need subscription for the service. And they will move on to something else that works for time being.

The thing is we as Software developers need to be honest with ourselves and really think about pricing. The product should be priced as per the effort and time it took to develop. If application needs maintenance then charge it separately. The customer should not have to pay for your life choices.

I see so many startups which create something trivial and then build an entire company around it. There are entire companies built around service like url shortener or service where you can aggregate all you social profile link and then put it in bio of Instagram. These companies might be successful today but the problem they solve is so trivial that anyone else can topple them with a self hosted solution or reasonable pricing.

For the love of God don't make your customers pay for how you want to live your Life.
