Re:Privacy Icons on Tuesday May 24, 2011 @01:21AM (#2578784)
I'm wary of this. Are the bad guys really going to be honest about what icons they display? (edit: I realize I'm repeating what's written in the article)
Re:Convert your emails to actions in one click on Thursday July 29, 2010 @08:34PM (#1559870)
I'm totally confused about how this works. The blog post and the home page didn't clear it up for me. Integrates with Gmail? What does Broadcast mean in this context? What do you mean, in your blog post, when you say you can now "archive the task".

Confused. Am I the only one?

Re:Ask HN: Review my web app, PrintedYelp.com on Friday July 16, 2010 @06:13PM (#1522782)
Great suggestion. Changed to PrintedPraise.com. Added CitySearch. Going to add plaques shortly (solid wood, lacquered, just like the fancy magazine article plaques).
Re:Ask HN: Review my web app, PrintedYelp.com on Friday July 16, 2010 @12:07PM (#1521540)
Thanks guys for all the feedback. Today I will drop the "PrintedYelp.com" name. This way I'll avoid the greatest legal concern and "abstract" the site to enable prints from other review sites.

Also, I will contact Yelp and let them know what I am doing.

Prints with frames are definitely high on the list. I just need to source some good frames, try them out, etc.

Ask HN: Review my web app, PrintedYelp.com

Today I noticed, for the second time this week, a local shop here in town prominently posted a few positive Yelp reviews (they literally printed them out and taped them to an interior wall)Not a bad idea. Twice in one week. Maybe it's a trend?A few hours later (thanks Weebly, Google Checkout, Pixlr!) and behold: PrintedYelp.com - an easy way for any small business owner to get a nicely...

Is there a reason why etacts.com doesn't show any screenshots?
Re:Andreessen’s Advice To Old Media: "Burn The Boats" on Saturday March 06, 2010 @07:17PM (#1172545)
Out of curiosity: how old are you?
FYI: Finding it odd that there is no "sign in" button.

Tried putting my e-mail address back-in on the home page and I get "need oauth token"

To be clear, you still need to give Etacts your password IF you use Google Apps (not simply gmail), right?

Launch at DEMO?

Someone I know was invited to launch his startup at DEMOspring 2010. For those who aren't aware of the event, it is pitched as "the premier launch pad for new information technology products." (See http://www.demo.com).There is a $18,500 fee to participate.Do Hacker News members think it makes sense to participate? Is it worth it? Have you had any experiences with DEMO?His startup is very...

FYI - this format was popularized by Academy123 (a Los Angeles area startup that was acquired by Discovery Education).

They used Win32 software running on Tablet PC's and captured a teachers voice and handwriting in real time.

At their peak, they had about 400 teachers working from home creating thousands of 3-5 minute mini-videos each day.

See some examples here: http://www.nutshellmath.com/textbooks_glossary_demos/demos_l...

Re:Turn stairs into piano = 66% more people use them on Saturday October 10, 2009 @03:46AM (#873102)
I wonder if you make the stairs just incrementally more interesting to use, would a lot more people use them? That is, people have a tendency to follow other people. So, for example, all you need is to do something that generates [initially] 10% more interest and you'll get 50% more usage (if that makes sense).
Great! Now gmail needs to make the "conversations" view optional and give me the ability to view my mail just like any other e-mail client (that is, without automatically combining unrelated e-mails into the same "conversation" just because they share a subject line).
Re:The joy of electronic books on Saturday June 13, 2009 @11:45PM (#656781)
Is there a legal way to sell used digital books or used digital music?

Like some app where you identify the mp3's that you'd like to sell. The price is half of itunes. When a user buys it, the app "permanently destroys" (yeah, yeah, i know) your copy of the mp3 and transmits the mp3 to the buyer.

Re-selling goods is a long-standing fixture of the economy. Doesn't it apply to digital goods too?

Re:Would you have survived in the middle ages? on Monday May 11, 2009 @03:45AM (#603135)
In reading the Kottke thread for about 30 mins (it rules), I just had this thought: What if Michaelangelo (or some other prolific inventors) weren't that special. What if they were simply average Joe's like you and me that were transported back in time. They used their basic knowledge of stuff around them to "invent" things.
Re:Milton Glaser: Ten Things I Have Learned on Tuesday May 05, 2009 @12:43AM (#593645)
Is there a web app that makes it easy to comment on single lines of text (or, say, a paragraph) on a web page. When you visit a page you can see all of the little in-line notes and comments that others left behind?

Kind of like leaving a Comment in a Word doc?

Re:Intuit tries to call Mint's bluff? Is this normal? on Saturday February 21, 2009 @12:49AM (#489687)
Yodlee powers Mint, many online banking sites, etc. Mint is an advanced skin on-top of Yodlee. Yodlee is not a consumer brand.

Quicken online is really, really bad. They should have acquired Mint at least 12 months ago.

Re:How Niko Tinbergen Reverse Engineered the Seagull on Sunday December 28, 2008 @05:11AM (#411840)
Robert Cialdini covers a similar experiment with turkeys in his excellent book, "Influence - The Psychology of persuasion"

For example, mother turkeys, who are known to be caring parents (as far as birds go), tend to respond only to the "cheep-cheep" sound of their chicks.

"Hearing the cheep-cheep, the mother turkey coddles and cares for the young turkey chick. It is a short-cut response that nature has given turkeys to know how to behave. It tends to work well in nature. But, tricky scientists recorded the cheep-cheep sound and placed the recording into a stuffed Polecat, the natural enemy of the turkey, and found that the mother turkeys adopted the stuffed polecat. Coddled it and cared for it."

When/How will postal mail go away?

Businesses like The Gas Company, The Water Company, The Plumbing Supply outfit still send paper invoices and statements to most of their customers. These businesses spend millions of dollars each year in postage alone (not counting paper, printing, labor, etc.).In this country alone, one million men are walking up to mailboxes, hand-picking-up, driving, sorting, re-sorting, driving, and...
