Re:European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:37AM (#50348491)
By now I just want everything just to be black on white or white on black text and nothing else. Or better, just an md file.
I watched tng and voyager 100s of times, I never have known any episode names of either. I recognized all the screens though and can tell what season and if it’s early or late in the season.
Can’t we not have some OS level thing which suppresses all intrusive dialog and puts them in a nice inbox so I can decide which I want to answer or ignore in bulk…
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:47AM (#50285662)
I still dream of driving to the moderators houses and hurting them. Not really of course but it was one nasty place in the end with all little tech gestapos on their sad little thrones. Happy it’s gone.
Where I live the stars are still there but the fireflies are gone. Such a shame.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:16AM (#50259756)
I don’t think anyone has figured how to do 10x the work yet as we don’t know what the work is. AI cannot (yet) define the work that needs to be done, for some definition of needs to be done, and we need humans to figure that out for now. Us humans cannot work fast enough so we still build the same stuff but with less people.
We do it’s a nice little niche. There was a lot of Zope around me. Opus has no issues with it at all.
Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:49PM (#50225102)
If you don't live in either, you might find them similar from the news we get. It does sound like a shit show in the US while probably most people living there notice nothing. As a tourist, US currently looks worse: I land in SFO and see streets with literal zombies while in Shanghai I do not. How can a country claim to be prosperous and yet allow that to happen. Some kind of starvation that is and because of misguided economic policies. Oh yeah, and both have dictators although you could argue that China is better at that too.
Re:Code Is Clay Now on Thursday October 22, 2026 @06:22AM (#50193475)
Most devs never understood the code. I worked with 1000s, most wrote code and delivered some stuff maybe, but never understood anything.

Yep I moved all namecheap and godaddy to porkbun.

Re:Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:17AM (#50104938)
I look back at my Enlightenment desktop with joy. I guess many people hated all the tinkering with drivers & settings etc, but I loved it. Spending a few weekends getting a computer running with Linux and Enlightenment exactly like I wanted it to and then actually using that as my main driver for years are very nice memories.
YMMV but I find people who want to exchange socials like insta far less likely to meet up again then just old fashioned phone numbers. To such an extent that I exchange socials and not waste the time.
Sure, I said propaganda: it isn't true, it is just everywhere so their fear mongering works.
There were articles in my the local newspaper at my parents saying that some guy said no one but a few people know where frontier AI really is and that these kind of articles are not scaremongering but perhaps as sign where anthropic actually is in the development of their models in the lab. So the propaganda is working.
Re:Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:53AM (#50052879)
I vibed and fixed all the stuff we use from Adobe. We don't use 8k*8k hasselblad whatnot; we use a few things that were terrible in open source and now are trivially replaced in a few weeks (yes yes the first vibe thing works but is not production ready; after a few weeks of daily fixes, it's good enough to cancel the subscription eeeh terminate the card you did the subscription on). Not everyone needs everything...
Re:Doory – Open-Source Canva on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:03AM (#50051588)
Yeah, I would and do, but many people like shiny and just jump around for some reason. And the ones that have a reason and make products popular overnight, have as reason that they need likes and upvotes as they are influencers.

People who have jobs, lives, other stuff to do in other words, keep sending me 'the latest new bla' many times per day, every day. All products that will be gone tomorrow.

I mean, AI made my own canva because my wife uses it and hates their support, bizarre amounts of long standing critical showstopper bugs and attitude to long standing members. So I hope they do get vibecoded to death, however, I would not release such a project until after a year of testing and fixing, which is where our version is about. Canva in the basis, like Miro etc is a one shot with Opus 5.5: it works fine-ish. But you will need months of grind to get it so people will want to use it.

Edit: in the vibecode age, 2000 commits would be the minimum to consider a project maintained. And then I do have a script to analyse the 'effort' of an average commit because some people fake commits with crap to inflate the number.

Re:AI can clone your indie game, but not its soul on Sunday October 04, 2026 @01:38AM (#49950989)
What is the latest SOTA examples for videos because all that I see scream AI which doesn’t mean they don’t look good but I would not say they have soul. Then again I don’t watch many videos so I might have missed new developments there. If they really work like you say, TikTok and insta and YouTube shorts are now just fake videos only?
Re:DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:23AM (#49930397)
I feel like I live in another reality from others here; I read people saying things ‘while their jaws are hanging open’ (not said here literally but the feel is the same ; I see it in other threads on HN literally here though); why are we so chuffed with stuff that’s now been one shot for maybe already a year, but definitely the last 6 months? Literally everyone who tried LLMs know this and yet it seems a huge surprise to people here that it is so easy now? And that’s opposite of the people, also very much on HN, who say AI is shit at coding and will not replace humans because humans have to fix its bad code.

Making more than $200/month with the results?

Re:NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:55AM (#49905801)
I am tempted to try it, but it would waste tokens that I need. I'm quite sure it'll do it one shot though.
Re:NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:48AM (#49905751)
When some human, let's say musk, buys a company and a bunch of people to build something, people congratulate him, not the people who did the work right? What's the difference?
I do not know in this case, but I led migration and cost benefits analysis beforehand of very large Windows 3.11 to 95 to 2000; at the time there was nothing else that was considered useful and there still pain and massive cost. Later on we had to consider Linux as alternative; it just wasn’t close ; the stability (yep), easy of use etc was just not feasible. Now that Linux is good and easy to configure to basically be exactly like Windows and now that most custom applications of large corporates are web based and specific ones can be ran via Citrix for a few people who need it, I am guessing it finally is cheaper now. And 90% of users won’t even notice the difference; I remember when I was planning my first 3.11 to 95 migration that people were by far most stressed about users unable to open applications as they remember not the name or the icon but 2nd row, 3rd down is Word. Start, 5 up, 1 right, 3 down is internet. Etc. So as long as that’s the same, you are fine. It’s how most our clients still work so we take care never to move functionalities; only add, no delete.
> Please don’t trivialise that just to point score, it’s bad taste.

Apologies; that was not my intention; I was reacting to your chemicals claim only.

I am not advocating; I am saying that I don’t believe it’s the other chemicals, it’s just alcohol, which is the poison in wine. They have 0.0 wine here which is just real wine with the alcohol removed after; that has then, I assume, the same chemicals and drinking that is harmful?

But is that alcohol or the other chemicals was my point; GP seem to imply it was the other chemicals; I doubt that. But yes, no alcohol would on average make you live longer.
And these things were cause and effect by some proof? Because there are plenty people who drink a bottle of white, red and/or rose for lunch here their entire lives to old age.
We have a client (a factory) I wrote a massive (for one person without AI) Clipper system for that runs the factory; this is decades ago but it just works and when they tried to replace it (not by us, but promises by others), it was worse and they did not switch. Cheating, but another client is a bank; they found its is really inefficient to not use DOS. Their machines use Windows but fullscreen DOS box you cannot close or minimize with the app in it.
Re:Humans Are Reading Your ChatGPT Chats, Lawsuit Claims on Thursday September 24, 2026 @12:48PM (#49833378)
Guess if they read mine the past year, they will definitely know a lot more swear words. I am not surprised though ; isn't humans giving positive feedback etc the best way to train? Even if they say they do not.
Re:Stripe's Knowledge AI Platform on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:40AM (#49816901)
TIL people still fall for eh I mean use Langchain. Sorry, low value comment; I don’t know how to do that differently; it is such bad garbage since day one and strangely it did not improve. Sorry anyway for the comment, at least it was not LLM generated?
