Ask HN: How do you find meaning in tech when it net destroys means of living?

I'm having a lack of sense of meaningful purpose and motivation to continue doing anything in tech because it seems like a net destroyer, taker of jobs and concentrator of wealth for the very few, and that participating in it would be complicit in the destruction of countless lives. And not thinking about it or rationalizing it away doesn't make the externalities disappear. No mythological...

Yup. Same tactic as economy plus and biz class... misery to sell upgrades
Re:How law enforcement is trying to avoid disabling Face ID on Saturday October 13, 2018 @10:50PM (#18211111)
Re rubberhose security: Face ID and Touch ID were both major security blunders by Apple because these enable security services and criminals to compel anyone to unlock their devices and incriminate/rob themselves. Only what someone knows, rather than what someone has, cannot be chopped off, presented or forcibly-applied to unlock a device... revealing information under duress is a choice, having a fingerprint taken to unlock a device is not a choice.

Widening the digital divide and discriminating against people.
Never. Trust. A. Woman.

It ain't worth it.

Heavy doses of atomoxetine, clonidine, mirtazapine and procrastination. WFM.
Re:FAA Moves Toward Treating Drones and Planes as Equals on Tuesday October 09, 2018 @02:22AM (#18173718)
Exactly. It's a step away from registering paper airplanes.

Seriously. It's like this phony electronics ban on flights. Eliminating all risks in one are is insane and unreasonable because it's so often to the detriment of everything and everyone else. Next, laser pointers will be outlawed because some idiot might shine them towards a plane. Instead of eliminating RC planes and model rockets for an edge-case that can never happen, maybe the FAA should focus on things that matter like human factors.

My grandmother, on good days, thinks my mom is her sister, that some mysterious individual is going to buy them all new homes and take her away from the nursing home. Most days though, my grandmother is mean to anyone around. Nursing home staff must grow very thick skin.
Not "sew," it's not ripped clothing; "sow" as in the seeds of revolution.
CBD helped me significantly.
It depends on where one is at in life. I would move to such a place to retire, but not just starting out.

Prague is relatively cheap.

Also, some of the college towns in the US if they're not nestled within major metros.

Tokyo, SF, NYC, London, Moscow, etc. are where the action is at: for people whom can compete and afford a lifestyle unsustainable for anyone else.

Secretive? Hardly. Any deca-/centimillionaire can point you toward good tax accountants whose job it is to minimize their client's tax burden within a certain gray zone. For more wholesale tax avoidance, putting it in non-self-destructing art would be far better than hiding it in gems or unstable cryptocurrencies.
Enjoy life while you can, it won't be here for long.
Wow. People these days must be square and boring. Heck, I remember a coworker's birthday bash on a Half Moon Bay beach with turntables, booze and bonfire til 4 am and people trying to steal our rented generator. If that's "pushing boundaries," I want to know where to turn in my cool kids' card.
Afterparty raves are a "scene" now? smh.
Banksy is my spirit animal.
Big claims require equally big evidence and big sources, otherwise it's he said/she said. I'm doubtful about the story but not against it entirely until more evidence and sources can be presented. If not, it smells like clickbait trying desperately to get traffic, and they just flushed their reputations down the drain.

Ralph Nader spoke recently at the Politics and Prose bookstore in DC about how few people it takes leading through action to get change done if public opinion backs them.

Re:A bipartisan plan to end surprise ER bills on Monday October 01, 2018 @05:17AM (#18111082)
Non-Americans may not realize: In America, going to the ER, it's possible and often happens that someone can be billed any random, unlimited amount for 10 seconds of interaction: $3,150 for "consultation." Yes. Heck, you don't even need to be seen to be billed. As soon as they collect personal information, despite not being seen, they can and do still try to bill you randomly regardless. One ER in the Bay Area has a security guard whose job it is to collect Social Security or tax identifiers from people before they can speak to anyone in the hospital.
Re:The Dead Beneath London's Streets on Monday October 01, 2018 @05:09AM (#18111039)
The Cataacombs in Paris are cool, I cannot recommend them as an unconventional tourist attraction enough. Just don't try to steal any bones or you will join them... a simple house rule.
Uppercase Liberal politicians and their education wizards (those who forgot liberal values, but would rather inflict collective punishment as a "solution") had forced bussing of kids in Northern California in the 80's and 90's. I had to ride the bus for an hour and a half each way, three hours total per day, because there were "too many" whites and Asians at a better school one block from where I lived. And I got to deal with gangs (XIV and XIII), drug dealers and far worse. Getting up at 4:15 am and not getting home until after 5 pm... at 8-11 years old. Affirmative action, my left foot.
