Re:Ask HN: how to manage golden handcuffs when changing jobs? on Thursday April 30, 2009 @08:22PM (#587816)
That's what I was thinking, but I'm unsure on how to raise this. I am getting a modest signing bonus, so suspect this won't go down well.

Ask HN: how to manage golden handcuffs when changing jobs?

I recently accepted a position at a company doing lots of interesting things which I am very excited about. The pay is comparable, which is great for a startup environment, however otherwise it's very much a lateral career move.I had originally planned to start this month, but due to some changes on their end they have asked me to start in July. Re:Ask HN: Boston or Silicon Valley? on Friday November 28, 2008 @02:47AM (#379182)
I had offers in both SV and Boston and it was a tough choice. I'm still not sure I made the right one.

While Boston is cheaper, it's not that much cheaper. I think you'll probably do slightly better off depending on the offer you get. (I currently live and work in Mountain View)

Startup-wise Boston seemed pretty sparse compared to the Silicon Valley. That was definitely part of my decision (not just where to work, but as you say, networking, conferences to go to, etc).

I still think little fish, big pond is the better way to go. It gets frustrating otherwise and limits your growth. Important team in a less known company also is much better for career and personal satisfaction.

I'll be honest, weather also greatly influenced my decision. Also what's your move going to be like? Getting all my stuff across the country was yet another reason for me to stay in the SV.

I personally actually much prefer Boston city and the general vibe of Boston, but career-wise I decided SV was better.

Ask YC: Boston or Bay Area?

I have just been offered a position in Boston. Current I live and work in the south Bay Area. It's an equivalent position, so not a jump in the career ladder, but to an industry I'm really interested in and a really great company. I'd be getting a lot less equity though.Has anyone here done the east coast/west coast relocation? What's it like? Any transitional issues? Any suggestions for...
