I've also noticed a local free paper (Metro) using tinyurl links in its web section.

His most recent comment says that he believes a typo in his fetchmail script meant it was looking for new mail every minute instead of every five minutes, and he thinks that's why he was suspended.

They're obsolete, allegedly. http://jmtame.posterous.com/capitalization-is-obsolete I disagree as I have to slow right down to read writing that's all in the same case (as otherwise it 'reads' as a monotone run-on sentence) and little is worth the effort, but he makes some interesting points.

The keyboard shortcut Alt-up moves you up the folder hierarchy on Vista. When I discovered that, I no longer cared that the up arrow button is gone in Vista. Very handy.

It's not yet a fully accepted verb, but it's becoming one.
Re:Firebug Lite 1.2 Released (Opera, Safari, IE supported)
on Saturday July 26, 2008 @08:25PM (#257884)
That webpage crashes Opera 9.51, whenever I try to close the page or navigate away. I can't even see why, as the code looks innocuous, but it does. I'd tell the author in comments there, but I can't without changing browsers.
Re:Ask HN: How do you read RSS feeds?
on Thursday July 17, 2008 @01:27PM (#248752)
I use Opera's feed reader at present, but mainly because I read some cookie-protected feeds and an in-browser one seems like the best solution. I keep a pretty tight leash on the feeds I subscribe to (twelve or so at the moment), and delete any I ignore for several days.

You might find this recent thread useful: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=204130 I recommended the book 'The Principles of Beautiful Web Design' there, and reiterate that.

I read that message as sarcastic, for just that reason.

My usual IRC channels have about a 3:1 female-to-male ratio. (I'm female.) Though that's on a small network, and hardly the norm.
Re:Ask PG: Are people getting more liberal with their downvotes?

You only have a downvote button if you've a certain amount of karma: I think 20.
Re:What to do if you are a good developer but no designer?
on Friday May 30, 2008 @04:38AM (#204160)
These are really good points. If you want to go beyond this, I'd suggest looking at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Beautiful-Web-Design/dp/097...">The Principles of Beautiful Web Design</a>, which is a good primer for web design principles. It's one of the few web design books aimed at people who find coding easy but design a mystery.

I found it cool as well, and appreciate you linking to that. It's somewhat inspiring to see how someone begins to think about a topic; leads me to stop rejecting my early ideas so ruthlessly.

It's worth noting that the betas only work for two days if not activated by a CS3 serial.

How about downloading the documentation to your work computer and using that local copy? If the docs fail, you can use the other computer to ask questions.

That's actually very similar to the point this writer makes: that learning different languages does have benefits, but that they should be significantly different. The two just differ on whether you should learn many different languages, or a few.

And if you do dislike Stephenson based on his other writing, this is still certainly worth a try. I thought it was excellent, but didn't enjoy his other books (other than Snow Crash).
