Re:Don't send me a message to tell me I have a message on Thursday April 18, 2013 @03:42PM (#5572625)
My favorite is nelnet.com (manages my student loans) who emails me to tell me I have a message, after which point I log in to the website, visit the message center, and click on the message which starts my browser downloading a PDF usually containing several pages of terms and branding bullshit and a sentence or two of actual text which most of the time is nothing I needed to know anyway. And of course the link text of the message that I click on is something useless like "Message regarding your account".

This sounds like something I'd be interested in. Link?
It's incomprehensible to me as an American how so many citizens of the country I live in are so fundamentally ignorant, but that doesn't change anything. I voted, but I honestly doubt my vote even gets counted. I wouldn't even be surprised if eventually it becomes public knowledge that the entire election process has been a complete sham and the totals mostly made up for the past few decades at least.

In any case, what am I supposed to do besides vote (at the polls - I'm all but convinced this is pointless), spend my money wisely (this is the best method I've come up with to enact some kind of change, but it's hardly effective since I'm not a billionaire), and write my "representatives" (who invariably respond with some boilerplate bullshit and go on doing whatever the folks paying for them (global business) want)?

I moved to bitbucket to get exactly that, but for free.

I want to make a difference. What can I say, and to whom?

Please don't assume every American is comfortable with this. On the contrary, I and most of my friends are fucking pissed. I've written my representatives, but I doubt it will do any good. I feel pretty helpless honestly.
Re:Steve Jobs is Watching You on Sunday December 26, 2010 @10:46PM (#2041769)
This is old (published august 2010). What are the sources of this article?

While I am certainly leery of this sort of thing and would not be surprised if it was at least partially true, it seems like bullshit to me.

I got this email as well, replied asking about it, and promptly got a response apologizing and explaining it was a bug in their mailing code. Life goes on.

How can I maximize the effectiveness of my professional online presence?

I am not an extrovert. I dislike social networking sites - I had a facebook account for about a year, but it's been closed for several years since. I choose different names for different sites of which I am a member because I am paranoid. It occurred to me this is a bad practice if I want to ever lose my 9-5 and work as a freelancer/contractor. Most successful freelancers/contractors I have...
