Perhaps comparing the anti-datacenter sentiment with the Luddite movement is being unfair to the Luddites (the more I read about the actual movement).
Fair enough, not a rational response on my part
I'm not sure why but my reaction to this is pretty negative.

This page must be hosted from a data center as well...they could add a star to the map for their own hosting?

How much electricity does their site use, etc? I've seen counters like this before, I think, about the electricity a site uses based on the weight of the page, etc.

I love the project. Will be excited to participate when it comes to MA.

They lay out the case clearly here...and I agree. This was my one-sentence take back in 2022: https://twitter.com/andyreagan/status/1506294505930203151

I can see that it's expensive, but have you tried it for effectiveness?

BTW, your approach is very cool here.

what town in MA are you? I'm in Shutesbury, and we're building a new library in the coming years. would be great to do this, and have an example to base from.

Oh interesting! We wouldn’t be messing with any bits, but rather responding to dns queries. The opt out or simply setting your own dns server would mean we’re not forcing anyone to use our dns “service”.

Ask HN: Running pi-hole for a whole town

The town I live in built our own fiber network that got finished in late 2019 (good timing for me to wfh!). Since we own the network, I think it would be cool to run something like pi-hole, or our own DNS, for the whole network (perhaps opt-in, or opt-out).Another potentially bad idea is to try and sell anonymized traffic data to make the service cheaper for residents.I’m sure folks here know...
