It seems a bit like Juicero - maybe investors are trying to find a corner of market based on food subscriptions.
Re:Firefox 66.0 Aims to Reduce Online Annoyances on Tuesday March 19, 2019 @10:22AM (#19431045)
Chrome won't autoplay videos having audio. Unless you've already interacted with the site.

Re:Facebook’s New Message to WhatsApp: Make Money on Thursday August 02, 2018 @05:37AM (#17670261)
I don't think there are so many ads on Youtube that it's enough of an annoyance to subscribe.
Re:Ask HN: Which Linux distribution you are currently using? on Wednesday February 11, 2015 @06:23AM (#9032301)
Not an answer, but people who are using Mint; is there an official upgrade path between releases yet? How do you upgrade?
I think this is the missing link:

Love that last bullet.
Re:Ask HN: How to monitor a rack of mac minis on Monday August 11, 2014 @04:23AM (#8162433)
I'm using Xymon ( example: https://www.xymon.com/servers/servers.html ). I found it didn't take much work to add a client to the monitor and the default set of reports was enough.

There's supposed to be an OSX client, but I haven't used it.

Re:Ask HN: How do you handle your music collection? on Monday March 24, 2014 @05:29AM (#7457338)
One day I got a cheap-ish NAS then used beets [1] to organise and copy all the music on my computer to it, listening to it with Banshee[2] over the network.

Then I got Spotify and don't bother much with it anymore...

Re:Ask HN: I want to work on games but not the graphics on Tuesday February 25, 2014 @06:23AM (#7296950)
You'd have trouble finding someone willing to do most of the work of writing a game and especially the artwork.

You're in luck though! The game is popular enough that someone else has had the idea of writing a clone:

"PokeClone: A Pokémon engine coded in Python"

http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=284297

https://github.com/tpwrules/pokeclone

Hmmm... Adblock Edge ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-edge/ ) with one of the privacy filter lists ( https://easylist.adblockplus.org/en/ ) would do in that case.
Use a privacy plugin for your browser e.g. Disconnect ( https://disconnect.me/ ).
Re:Do people really read long discussion threads? on Friday December 27, 2013 @04:27AM (#6970037)
I'm actively trying not to spend too much time reading other people's opinions on the internet these days, it's such a time sink and you do come away with such a negative opinion of the world.

But I'll go through the comments if it's a subject I'm interested in and the comments are constructive or add to the original link. Often I've noticed a pattern where the largest discussions start with a comment along the lines of "This article is wrong because ..." and the reply "<quote from above comment> No, it's not because ...". That's a sign to just close the tab.

I have Greasemonkey and the "Hacker News collapsible comments" script installed:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/138037

I do recommend that for an improved HN procrastinating experience.

I use "Adblock Edge" as an alternative. It's basically a fork of adblock plus but without the "acceptable ads" feature.
Re:Ask HN: Feedback on My Attendance Management System on Thursday August 22, 2013 @06:42AM (#6256295)
Seems decent. Thoughts:

* Lose the background image. A plain background is fine.

* "You have punched out for the day". Okay? But it's a button, do I press it? What do I do with it?

* Consider not using the term "Stuff", "Company Stuff" -> "Company", "My Stuff" -> "My Attendance"

* Things like attendance tables could probably be more "graphic" rather than boring tables of "Present" or "Not present". Think about coloured squares to indicate attendance or icons.

It's easy to get excited, but I remember the hype surrounding the Segway.

Ask HN: What have you spent your training budget on?

For the last 10 years or so, I've been a web developer using Python, CSS, HTML and Javascript on Linux and for the first time, I've been offered a training budget! So I'm looking for suggestions as to what to spend it on. Ideally "getting better at what I do" rather than perhaps more introductory material. Books, screencasts, conferences etc.For example I'll probably go to PyconUK this year, and...

Maybe it's just me, but the requestAnimationFrame code fails in Firefox unless they're all prefixed with 'window.'

It probably works straight away in Chrome because requestAnimationFrame is defined.

Re:Python 3 "Wall of Shame" Becomes "Wall of Superpowers" Today on Wednesday December 12, 2012 @09:04AM (#4910042)
I assume they're sorted by the number of downloads from the Python packaging index (PyPI).

Tornado might be one of those packages people install from their distro's package or download from the parent website rather than via PyPi.

As for the background ... <shrugs>

To be fair, Drupal et al. are great for throwing at non-technical users and letting them create their own content.

It serves spam when I request the page with curl, and goes away if I put a user agent header in there with "Firefox/12.0". Odd.

"Anyway, If you ever receive such a call, do not follow along"

But then perhaps stringing them along means less time for them to be calling other people who may not be aware of this scam?

Presumably he's referring to the plethora of comments below from accounts created within the last hour whose only comment is a one or two word praise for this submission.

It smells of sock-puppetry, but odd considering this is exactly the submission that would appeal to this audience.
