Re:Summer Afternoon – A WebGL Experiment on Saturday January 21, 2023 @08:39AM (#34466330)
Agree that close to the metal threeJS gets you best performance but don’t sleep on Unity WebGL.

They announced at their Unite conference a few months ago they were gonna add proper mobile support for it. Nice to see them investing.

Also shameless plug for Spatial.io . With Unity’s URP we can get near AAA visual quality in the browser with our platform.

1 click export from Unity and your scene instantly gets hosted multiplayer, chat, native web/mobile/vr apps, etc.

The future is bright for web and no install! And with App Store’s 30% cut the economic winds are at our back!

Ask HN: What is the best programmable drone, sub $400?

I'd like a nice, simple API where I can set relative XYZ position so I can program indoor flight paths. Here's what I've found:• $3300 DJI Matrice 100, nice API with XYZ support, but pricey• $550 Parrot Bebop 2, decent API but only supports yaw/pitch/roll setting• $300 Parrot AR Drone 2 cheaper but API is ancient, docs are from 2012• $180 Crazyflie, API looks quite rough, doesn't seem to have...

Pretty cool feature set. Didn't realize you could do things like "remember where I parked" automatically.
Re:Poll: Non-Founders, Why Are You Not Starting a Start-Up? on Wednesday September 28, 2011 @03:37PM (#3049529)
Doing a startup is really hard. Emotionally grueling and demanding. You have to fight for every 100 users you get. At a bigger company you get 100k's or millions of users "automatically". Right now, I'm more interested in building world changing products that are used by millions, and I feel like my chances for success are higher at a big company since lots of really cool startups die because they couldn't get enough awareness/marketing to get adoption.

"At a startup all your challenges are external. At a big company, all your challenges are internal".

Fwiw, I started a startup that was acquired so I'm also incented to stick around so that probably biases my thinking a bit too.

I'm a user and their service is different from Google Voice. It's a professional sounding 1-800/voicemail system intended for business, not personal use. "Push 1 for customer service, Push 2 for sales" type of thing.

Grasshopper is a pretty cool service, had some clunky UI though. We use it at BumpTop.com.

They mailed us some chocolate covered grasshoppers recently as a mktg campaign, kinda crazy.

1.6 million files break down in most viewing paradigms. In BumpTop you can turn on "infinite workspace" and you can have thousands of files. Then use pile by type or date to automatically make that more manageable.
BumpTop already works on any folder :)

We have an experimental "Bump This Folder" shell extension, which provides a little button in Windows Explorer that turns the current view into a BumpTop. It needs to be enabled in the BumpTop settings.

Do you have any suggestions for how we could improve BumpTop?

Re:Ask HN: Which Wiki to use? on Thursday November 20, 2008 @06:58PM (#371224)
We just recently looked at a few options and pbwiki beats them all. WYSIWYG and elegant.

It seems ultra expensive but you can negotiate a pretty dope rate. We got $100/year for unlimited users and stuff. Call that 1-888 number and work that magic!

BumpTop. http://bumptop.com a 3D desktop yo.
Re:Ask YC: Give Beta users a free release copy? on Wednesday November 05, 2008 @09:57PM (#355303)
I wouldn't say our average tester has given us $25 worth of testing. But some definitely have, even more than $25 worth. Separating these after the fact is potentially sticky.
Re:Ask YC: Give Beta users a free release copy? on Wednesday November 05, 2008 @09:54PM (#355300)
Nice. I like the suggestion of giving beta users a free copy of software if they found a bug you didn't know about.
Re:Ask YC: Give Beta users a free release copy? on Wednesday November 05, 2008 @08:50PM (#355273)
How deep of a discount would make sense? We're looking at a $25-30 price point.

We plan on having a Free and Pro version. The Free version will have a generous helping of the features. It'll be fully functional and not crippled. The Pro will have a few more icing features, but stuff that can be lived without.

Ask YC: Give Beta users a free release copy?

We're getting close to launching our product which is a consumer desktop app. We're currently in private beta.Should we give our beta testers a free or discounted copy of the final Pro version? Some sound like they are expecting a free copy or they'd be offended.I want to be as generous as possible and establish strong long-term relationships with our customers, especially those who've given...

Re:Ask HN: Valuation of domain for sale to large corporation? on Thursday October 30, 2008 @12:14AM (#348421)
There is a official procedure that companies can use to dispute the domain name if you're trying to hustle them that costs them about $1000-2500. I forget what its called but if you look at past cases you'll see a lot of people trying to hustle corporations and the decisions handed down. I think if Bellog thinks they can win (very possible) they would price you according to that figure.

Re:Introducing Amazon's Windowshop.com on Sunday October 26, 2008 @11:57PM (#344814)
Zoomii.com is a nice completely javascript version by a friend from a canadian startup. Focused completely on books. Zoomii's really impressive. Its speed makes google maps feel slow.

TinEye is impressive.

Also nice is TinEye mobile. Amazing. Take a picture of a CD and it instantly pulls up the iTunes store page where you can buy+listen to samples. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=320388

Re:As-Rigid-As-Possible Shape Manipulation (awesome video) on Saturday May 24, 2008 @01:30PM (#198899)
Nitpick #2, Jeff Han references that he's implementing this rigid as possible paper at about 8:20. Jeff is a big fan of research and implements a lot of existing techniques invented by others in his demos.

I work in the same lab as Tomer who did this paper, Big Ups Tomer!
