Thank you! Open source truly is a gift.

I was so blown away by the title and equally disappointed to discover this line.

Pack it in, guys. No magic today.

I’d venture to say it’s the range:

What style? Is it a texture? If so, I’ll need a model that can generate a large tiled image. Is it a logo? What kind? Is it badged, vintage, corporate, etc

No evidence beyond Medium articles and Reddit posts.

You bear a terrible burden, then.
I remember the “community” having its own well-defined memes and culture by at least 2016

Another potential alternative would be some sort of book wheel. Where the book surface is wide enough to accommodate the desk's surface. Each surface could then have its own layout to suit its unique purpose.

I share your frustration with electronics. I'd love to be able to simply shove it all back into the wall once I'm done. Power supply, soldering iron, components and all.

Re:Tiny Glade 'built' its way to >600k sold in a month on Tuesday November 19, 2024 @10:11PM (#42190512)
I have to imagine much of this comes down to the fact that VR games, which have additional hardware requirements, necessarily cater to a much smaller segment of the market. Selling an indie game is already hard enough!
Finally bought a rice cooker 6 months ago. No idea why I hadn’t done it sooner. Perfect rice every single time. I believe that qualifies.

Edit: I also bought an emergency jumpstart battery for my car. Saved me twice when my battery suddenly started having issues. Went from feeling “stuck” to back on the road in under 2 minutes.

OP, I would replace or rework the icons on your landing page. The stroke width varies as does its color which undermines the rest of the design. Apart from that, nice job!
Re:Simon Verity believed in working the medieval way on Saturday September 07, 2024 @11:21PM (#41477970)
And yet he walked around belonging to a fraternity of men whose work stands the test of time.

I’d never considered the kinship a mason might feel, taking up the work of restoring or repairing the work of a predecessor who may have died hundreds of years before.

It served to remind me to be grateful my dad is still alive and to engage in a similar reflection.

I’ve heard people say that while you have the chance, you should sit down and interview your father. The other day I happened to stumble on a list of questions one might ask:

1. What is your best memory of your own father?

2. What did you have as a child that kids today are missing?

3. What has life taught you about love?

4. What are the three most important values in life?

5. What was the moment you were most proud of me?

6. What do you wish most for your children?

7. What is the most importantly family tradition you’d like us to keep?

I just so happen to be working on one! It stemmed from my dissatisfaction with the existing meal tracking apps I’ve tried.

Initially I’d wanted to track spending as well but apps like YNAB cover this use-case better than I can in the near term so I struck it from the roadmap.

I’m trying to focus on health: meal planning and workout scheduling in a system flexible enough to make suggestions as your exercise regimen (and thus your nutritional requirements) change. Will also be looking into sleep tracking and other metrics.

Let me know if there’s anything else you’d want to see from an app like this. Happy to shoot you a link to the repo when the MVP gets off the ground.

This is slightly orthogonal to the point of this post but I've been looking at Webflow again for some potential client work and I was curious what people's thoughts on it were.
Fantastic. I was stunned at how quickly and easily Unpoly transformed my small Django app from "dusty" to snappy and SPA-like.
I’ve been very happy with Django ninja. It brings in pydantic as well so you get the benefit of type safety in addition to a much faster request response cycle as compared to DRF
I had to double check the reference just to make sure you were in fact talking about business luminary Royce du Pont. His negotiation tactics are second to none.
Re:Amazon spends another $2.7B on Anthropic on Wednesday March 27, 2024 @02:08PM (#39842574)
Having used Anthropic's products fairly extensively over the last few weeks, I would jump at the opportunity to invest in that company.

Claude 3 Opus has replaced ChatGPT for all of my use-cases to the extent that I'm probably going to cancel my GPT4 subscription. This is for web-based Python and JS work, so YMMV.

If I can tack onto this, "Hard-boiled Wonderland" by Murakami was one of the most fun and engaging books I've read in the last decade.
OP, I apologize as it doesn't quite answer your question but I discovered this article [0] many years after going through what I later identified as a series of depressive episodes. I revisit it every so often to remind myself that even in those moments, life is worth the weight of your efforts.

Longform articles notwithstanding, do you have any interest in audiobooks? I recall Moby Dick filling a similar role.

Re:Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:59PM (#39751081)
On swaying culture in any meaningful way: I thankfully learned that lesson early. It's one of the reasons I'm grateful for having worked here. As someone building a product on the side, it's been very useful to see how much influence executives can have on the business' culture. I've spent a fair amount of time reflecting on the problems my own personality might cause.
Re:Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:44PM (#39750948)
The most shocking part about this comment to me is that tidbit about AWS limits. It's amusing to me that their egress fees also extend into the UI.
Re:Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:42PM (#39750927)
I've heard it spoken by members of upper management, which obviously serves to reinforce the culture (and was a massive red flag for me at the time). I will say, though, that management is very open to improvements in procedure so it's more that the rank-and-file have accepted the status quo. They also have a habit of promoting a spirit of entrepreneurship within the company, which seems to be the thing that keeps me coming back for more.
Re:Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:24PM (#39750793)
While I have yet to work with a large Django monorepo, it's the architecture I'm leaning towards for a product I'm building. Are you guys using packages like nplusone [0] to help with some of this ORM complexity? As I mentioned, I am headed in this direction so I'm curious to hear your insight. I'd also love to pick your brain on any other pitfalls of this approach.

Re:Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:19PM (#39750745)
Along these same lines, it is common at my organization for people to gleefully say "welcome to ${ORG}!" or "It's the ${ORG} way!" in response to some failure that comes down to managerial knee-jerk or some fundamentally broken process.

It always seemed so perverse to me to promote this sort of tacit approval--as you say--passing it off as "cute" instead of... improving things.

Re:Wrangling 2000 Git Repos at Reddit on Monday March 18, 2024 @06:12PM (#39750687)
If this is the case, then why in the world wasn't that mentioned in TFA? I'm not questioning your comment but it strikes me as odd that there would be no attempts to clean any of that up.
This maps almost 1:1 onto my experience, except for the fact that my father achieved some measure of success having never gone into business.

I almost didn't graduate high school and made a mess of my time at university, dropping out entirely my senior year (drugs and alcohol fueled by deep self-loathing made this an easy choice at the time).

Like you, I wish my dad had realized what he was doing in raising his children the way he did. His circumstances were deeply cruel. My relationship with him now continues to be marred by my understanding that he doled out the same punishment to his children and justified it by telling himself he was making us tougher.

In the end, it also took me nearly a decade to reach some level of parity with my peers. If that resilience is what got me here, then fair enough. But the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

I'd echo the same sentiment as the other commenters, if you don't mind me throwing my hat into the ring. Considering a MS in Data Science with a focus on ML
