Re:The current AI pricing was always going to go away on Friday May 22, 2026 @12:05PM (#48237764)
I seldom use my PC anymore ever since i got a laptop. with the cost per token increasing along with the random "features" where models will just eat through your tokens in one hour. I really have been tempted to turn my PC into a server to run local models on there

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025) on Sunday May 25, 2025 @08:57PM (#44092856)
I implemented CSP and created internal tools to handle and process the reports. Would love to contribute and build a OSS tools to process reports.

Done. Give it a try!

I do not, but I can add that later today.

I have slowly been aggregating various blogs in the cybersec realm at https://securityblogs.xyz/

I add new blogs as I run into them on twitter/reddit/HN/etc

Re:Intro to CSP report-to and report-URI HTTP headers on Friday June 28, 2024 @09:48AM (#40820576)
Yes that is one thing I have learned that there can be a lot of noise from these CSP violation reports. I have found that setting up some alerts for particular resources seems to help suppress some of the noise.
Hi HN,

I wanted to show a project that I worked on last week. securityblogs.xyz is a simple website that aggregates a bunch of news sites and blogs and displays it on a single page. I have been trying to learn Go and used HTML templating to generate the html page for the site.

Feel free to raise a new issue [1] if you would like to add a new source to the site.

Re:Nitter Shutting Down on Saturday January 27, 2024 @10:13PM (#39162195)
Unfortunately, waiting for them to ‘get the message’ is a losing battle. The main issue i find is that non-tech related folks just don’t care enough about this stuff to move to different platform.
Different way to tweet the tweet > After firing half of Twitters employees, the few that do remain do not fully understand the overly complex recommendation algorithm. I am hoping that we can crowdfund development work by making it open source.

As an aside, it'll be interesting to see what license he open sources it under.

Re:Twitter Blue for $8/Month on Tuesday November 01, 2022 @02:37PM (#33425493)
On the Android Twitter app, I get an ad every 4 tweets on my timeline. So "half as many ads" would make it an ad every 8 tweets.
Re:Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?” on Tuesday September 27, 2022 @11:50PM (#33004042)
I am glad that a lot of people in this thread have figured out the fraud and caught the rogue employee early on. But the reason this fraud is so prevalent is because it works.

I have a friend who had someone else go through the interview process for him and ended up getting hired at one of the top 10 largest banks in US. Not only that, but because he was grossly under qualified for this job, he hired someone to teach him how to do his job. He works his normal 8-5, then he screen shares with this guy and they work together to complete his tasks. I'm a bit surprised that this worked and that they still haven't caught on, he has been working there for 8-10 months now. He has been sharing company intellectual property of a top US bank to foreigners for 8-10 months. The saddest part about this is that, he isn't a dumb, he is knowledgeable enough to get a decent job without cheating. In fact he has worked, both legally and ethically, for reputable companies.

I am still on the fence on this. On one hand this is a good pro consumer move while also being environmentally friendly but this will likely hinder innovation in the field. If a new way charger standard was found which was a fraction of the cost of USBC and double the speed, the fact that companies would be forced to still use USBC is tough.

I also found this tidbit pretty funny.

> The legislation has been under development for more than a decade, but an agreement on its scope was reached this morning following negotiations between different EU bodies.

> The EU denies this will be the case, and says it will update the legislation as new technology is developed. > “Don’t think we’re setting something in stone for the next 10 years,” said Breton at the press conference.

Would this also apply to other crypto exchange platforms like Binance and Kraken? or is this something only applicable to Coinbase?
Re:No Dislikes has officially ruined YouTube for me on Tuesday May 10, 2022 @09:44AM (#31327036)
I mean $1000/month is pretty good considering he has to do nothing besides keep his script running.
Re:What are your most used self-hosted applications? on Wednesday May 04, 2022 @11:07AM (#31261540)
A Raspberry Pi is the perfect playground to get started with self-hosting. It is cheap and barely takes up any physical space.

Pi-Hole and bitwarden are simple enough applications that you can host both of them on a pi. Plus there are plenty of guides available online to guide you thru the process if you do get stuck.

I got started with self-hosting pi-hole on a raspberry pi myself.

This will just result in lowered salaries across the boards no?

The article mentions that there won't be any pay cuts, and that might be true for the current employees but for new employees the companies will just adjust (read: cut) pay to 32hr weeks.

I am also struggling to see how they plan on keeping track of this "no pay cut".

My company is in the middle of a multi year transition from selfhosting atlassian products to using their cloud offerings, and I am sure the infrastructure team/management is very thrilled to see this news.
This is pure speculation, but I wouldn't even be surprised if didn't have any say in this. What likely happened is that higher ups proposed a new feature to ban certain words, likely phrased as a way to remove racist and/or derogatory words.
Re:If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it? on Friday March 18, 2022 @04:06PM (#30726891)
This feels like one of those things where people only notice the bad experiences, bad search results, and ignore all the times it was right, good/neutral search results.

One of google search's biggest advantages is the ability to save a click for the user. If I search for "NCAA scores" google will show me the live scores directly instead of showing me a link to the ncaa website which also shows me the score but at the expense of me having to click on the link.

IMO, the right way to dethrone google search would be to have better (or more) QOL features.

Re:Google Domains is out of beta on Tuesday March 15, 2022 @03:40PM (#30690387)
+1 to Porkbun. I think cloudlfare sells domains at-cost so if you want something cheaper than they might be worth looking into.

But I have been a happy porkbun customer for a few years and they are my go to recommendation to anyone who asks.

Re:How to get the most out of your 1:1s on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @11:49AM (#30616693)
My manager technically has a "one on one" (30 mins) meeting every week with me. But the type/purpose of this meeting alternates.

One week its an "Alignment" meeting between me and my manager. This is a time where the manager can talk to me about my current tasks and if I need any assistance from him. We also go over our yearly goals on a regular basis here, just so we can make sure that I am on the right track.

The next week we have our 1:1 meeting. These are lead by me and gives me dedicated time to discuss anything I would like.

What I described above is the only structure to the meetings. If manager doesn't have much to discuss in our alignment meetings he opens the floor for any 1:1 type of discussion and on the flip side, if I wanted to talk about my current blockers during my 1:1 meeting that is also fine.

So to answer your question, our 1:1 are biweekly.

Re:How to get the most out of your 1:1s on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @11:38AM (#30616523)
I would disagree, but it comes down to what kind of manager you have. I have seen plenty of people here on HN say that their 1:1 are basically just a manager going through the motion but there are still many 1:1 who are highly effective.

1:1s between me and my manager are usually very productive. Our project had non existent tests and through 1:1s I was able to advocate for tests and TDD to my manager. 6 months later our entire team is all-in on TDD. There were other gaps that I noticed on my team too that I would bring up in our 1:1 and we have a discussion about it. Are all my suggestions going to be implemented? No, but it's still worth having a discussion.

that poor calculator
I might be misunderstanding the service you are suggesting here, but are you suggesting printing a physical book containing a bunch of saved blogs, articles and twitter threads? If so, the number of articles that I would want to have them physically printed are very few, if any.

But on the other hand if you mean a book as in making a small little ebook, that I could read on my phone offline, I would be interested in a service like that. It would also depend on how the articles and blog posts are extracted, as in, if the blog is technical in nature with code snippets and stuff will the ebook version have that too.

Ask HN: What digital newspaper/news website is worth subscribing to?

Right now I primarily use twitter and reddit to stay up to date about topics of interest (tech, security, politics, and finance). As I push myself to limit my reliance on social media, finding a digital newspaper to subscribe to would go a long way in helping me stay up to date to current eventsEdit: Based in US Mid west
