Show HN: I wrote my first neural network

https://github.com/stupid-genius/Perceptron

I have been interested in neural nets since the 90's. I've done quite a bit of reading, but never gotten around to writing code. I used Gemini in place of Wikipedia to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. The coolest part of this was learning about dual numbers. You can see in early commits that I did not yet know about auto-diff; I was thinking I'd have to integrate a CAS library or...

Show HN: JavaScript MapConcurrent

https://github.com/stupid-genius/MapConcurrent

I created an object that provides a concurrent map operation, inspired by patterns common in Java, but that I've not seen in JavaScript. This was mostly an exercise to see if I could get it to work; I haven't used it in anything yet. It uses WebWorkers and transfers buffers instead of copying them which is faster than array.map.

> "Like most companies, we have a performance management process that helps our managers identify who on their teams are performing well and who may need more support. For the small number of employees who are underperforming, we use performance management programs to help them improve, and many employees do just that."

That language is so disrespectful. If I were an Amazon employee reading that, it would feel like being in a toxic, violent relationship and hearing my partner at a party tell others "They're so clumsy; they need my support. They fall down the stairs a lot."

When I got my first job as a professional SE, I'd been in technical fields for almost 15 years, and had been programming as a hobby for most of my life. I was smart, articulate, and passionate, but had no experience. I think the thing that pushed me over the edge during the hiring process was that I had made a number of hobby projects that I shared with them and they could see my work.

Re:Names should be cute, not descriptive on Thursday January 12, 2023 @01:01PM (#34357787)
I am so sick of everything having a cute name. Projects can have a cute name; components should not. Imagine if cars did this.

You'd get into your car, and it can have a cute name because it's one name to remember and your car can just be a "Jetta", but the "steering wheel" should be called that. Otherwise you can't go anywhere because you're not sure if you should chauffage the afiafi before you cosmo the thanos.

chauffage: french for "warm" afi afi: samoan for "motor" cosmo: from the Jetson's Cosmo Spacely, maker of sprockets thanos: no logic whatsoever, I just like the movie (and a bit of whimsy is cute, right?) --good luck trying to figure out what it refers to, I'll probably be gone from the company by the time anyone notices

People complain that naming things is hard, but I argue that it's hard if you don't have a good understanding of what the thing is.

Always the first thing I do on any new system. Caps lock is the most useless key in the most prime real estate.
