What's dumb about smart teevees? The essential part has one lifecycle and the smarts have another. Better have the smarts outboard so they can be replaced when they're obsolete.

Imagine having to toss your car when it needs new tires.

Niue isn't a city (nor village). It's a country.

Saw him 234 nights ago. My date and I have each seen-heard him a few times before but none of them shared. We both thought it was an incredible show, which we wouldn't say about all of them.

This interviewer had good questions. Didn't know him, but was pleasantly surprised to read a bit about him.

I get a free assist over that paywall from my public library.

How many times in a day are you unpleasantly astonished by something made out of bits? (I'm working around one with a set screw now.)

Re:Using floating-point numbers for money on Saturday January 25, 2020 @02:30PM (#22148115)
Isn't it just the difference between measuring and counting?

There's no occurrence of the word count here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accuracy_and_precision.

We can count things and know that number exactly. We cannot measure anything to exactness.

"Interesting" "feature" of their platform that I see monthly, and more recently given the season. I get a message like "where's my table?"

But I'm not a seller. My username is simple and a common first name. I've approached them a few times, and there's no interest in fixing it. Yesterday, I found where I could open/sever the connection between those messages and my email. It's been going on for years.

Many confused users, although I have little idea how long they stay that way.

Re:The Next Nuclear Plants Will Be Smaller and Safer on Saturday December 14, 2019 @09:59AM (#21789771)
But others remained unaware of the invisible dangers around them: soldiers lounged in the sun close to the reactor, smoking cigarettes and stripped to the waist in the summer heat; a group of KGB officers arrived in the zone incognito, clad in tank crew overalls and carrying expensive Japanese-made dosimeters—but approached the ruins of Unit Four without knowing enough to turn the devices on. Only the fate of the crows that had come to scavenge from the debris but stayed too long—and whose irradiated carcasses now littered the area around the plant—provided any visible warning of the costs of ignorance. Spotify on Android turns 1x2 into 1×2 in the password field. I don't recall what the two digits were, and I didn't try any other two.
Re:The $10m Engineering Problem on Sunday October 20, 2019 @08:24AM (#21303682)
A $10m problem is 1,000,000,000× smaller than a $10M problem.

The shape of "lowercase sigma" depends on whether it's in the middle of a word or at the end. These are adjacent in address space.

ς and σ. I won't shout out their names. Is this the case in modern Greek too?

Because all of them don't want it?
