We do steam clean the streets in Downtown Seattle (and have been doing that for decades), its part of why Seattle is so much cleaner than other cities.

Our new Park Ambassadors are here to help make the parks more inviting to be in: https://downtownseattle.org/about/careers/park-ambassador-pa...

The root issue, severe wealth stratification leading to hopelessness and escapism via drugs is something no city can address on its own.

We need national policy change to provide opportunities for the majority of Americans. Short of that, this problem will continue :c

Downvoting (from what I gather) is supposed to be used not as a disagree button, but rather as a tool when a comment doesn't add value to a conversation, hence why downvotes are so restricted on HN.
The timing is just so interesting though!

Two of my comments saw 3 downvotes in the span of a minute, the latter of which was much further down than this comment.

The severe wealth stratification that has occurred over the last few decades has left the majority of Americans facing a grim future of low earnings and unstable employment.

Its easy to see how that would make many people depressed and lead to a cycle of addiction to escape this crappy reality.

We have real issues in Seattle, but having frank conversations about it has been quite troublesome, too many people want to talk about feels rather than facts, leading to local satire like this: http://theneedling.com/2019/02/05/magnolia-named-worlds-most...

Seattle Parks & Recreation has started adding Park Ambassadors to address what you experienced, and it has significantly improved the downtown parks: https://downtownseattle.org/about/careers/park-ambassador-pa...

Microsoft advocated for a tax on very large companies to fund social services to break the cycle of poverty leading to lack of opportunity for our youth: https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/news/2019/07/21/amazon-m...
Taking a picture of a tent is not doxing. They could've even used the tent platform in the playground at gasworks with their own tent but they could not be bothered to lift a finger :c
Its significantly safer than San Diego & Irvine IMO, both of which still criminalize homelessness and have had Hepatitis outbreaks due to these ineffective policies.

Google, Apple, Expedia and Facebook are each building and hiring thousands here in Seattle, our homeless are significantly less aggressive than those I encounter in California.

They produce some great articles :3
Please cite how Seattle's policy of not locking people up to rot in prison is extremist.

You had a viable argument right up until that point!

Edit: Thanks for the bot downvotes! Going from +2 to -1 in the span of a minute on two separate comments is a bit of a red flag :P

They don't have statistics to back their position, this attitude of not working from the data we have is such an issue that it has become local satire in Seattle: http://theneedling.com/2019/02/05/magnolia-named-worlds-most...
We don't have sufficent funding of social services to provide navigation teams and counselors to all of the visibly homeless (those you see on the street), never mind the thousands living in their cars in Seattle (the invisible homeless).

Seattle is doing what it can, but we need state and federal action to go further. We can't single handedly solve the severe wealth stratification that is worsening day by day :c

Washington State is one of the heaviest users of legal marijuana: https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/nation-and-world/sewage-t...

I doubt we will ever reach Portugal's low levels of use, but people can lead happy & productive lives while having chemical dependencies.

The UK's war on drugs and party culture surrounding ket and others is kinda sad to watch :c

As much as the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the local Sinclair affiliates might scream that Seattle is wrecked, people and businesses are still moving here, our economy is growing, and massive redevelopment is occuring.

One other place to pay attention to is Shelton, WA, they have a very interesting communal approach to homelessness and providing services, which has built a strong community that wooed some of my friends to buy and retire in Shelton.

Re:Splunk acquires cloud monitoring service SignalFx for $1.05B on Wednesday August 21, 2019 @08:10PM (#20763329)
Perhaps the addressable market on their own was too small (or so the team at SignalFx felt), thus now is a good time to sell.

Splunk already has Enterprise and B2B sales down cold, adding a supporting product is an easy in-sell.

How does output compare to Mozilla TTS or Google's new customizable TTS: https://sample-efficient-adaptive-tts.github.io/demo/

The latter requires a few minutes of audio to tune it to clone a voice.

Better yet, an RFID tag or BTLE beacon can be embedded cheaply.

Some pallets already have these types of chips embedded, and it has ensured these pallets are returned in most cases (and prevented pallet resale).

Sounds like the perfect place for a bribe transparency website to name and shame officals that take bribes.
Re:Google Live Transcribe speech engine open sourced on Saturday August 17, 2019 @04:26AM (#20722881)
This title is disingenuous, the part open sourced is a client for the Google Speech API, not the actual speech engine (eg: the interesting bits that Mozilla is trying to build with Mozilla Deepspeech).

Time and resources to make and support babies is a big constraint.

Most parents want to provide a standard of living to their kids that is better than what they grew up in, which costs significantly more to provide.

Kids didn't always have their own bedrooms or cellphones, and in an agrarian society kids were useful as extra "free" labor. The shift to cities has rewritten the economic calculations potential parents do.

>I use Signal with one friend, and just about every time I launch the damn app on my phone or desktop, it complains that I need an update, or I need to re-link something

If you regularly need to relink Signal Desktop, it is likely your disk is failing and corrupting the sqlite DB that Signal Desktop uses. Back up your other data ASAP!

They suspsended the rider's account, the very least they could do is suspend the driver's account till the matter is resolved (Seattle Police Dept lists cases online FYI). Without suspensions, your letting two people who have been in a violent altercation continue to put the rest of your drivers & riders in jeopardy.
Yeah, OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace have taken many of the flaky people off Craigslist, improving CL's reliability.
Note: The south end of the bridge the Uber driver sped across is the most ticketed intersection in Seattle.

I had a very similar experience on OfferUp, where a person threatened to kill me via OfferUp Messages after I wouldn't meet him in the middle of a protest (he had driven into the protest, right past the starbucks where I was waiting for him).

OfferUp ignored my report in app, emails and calls, this user has kept accreting more reviews since.

Craigslist has been far safer for me, OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace seem to have peeled off the hot headed 15 to 30 year old user demographic, leaving 40+yo buyers that have been straightforward to deal with.

Who knows? The messenger has manufacured false documents in the past, which was OP's point.
Manual mode is available on many Android phones: https://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-take-photo-manual-mo...
Google and other large tech companies feel they are omnipotent and beyond the reach of law.

This is damaging our society as these companies act anti-competitively, or worse yet attempt to undermine our economy with alpha quality software like Libra (built on a nightly build of Rust to ensure maximum jankiness).

CSS and jQuery could be usable for OOP, but I'd hardly call it common to do OOP CSS.

Perhaps the HR dept is mashing things they want together...

Re:Please don't be an Application Blackhole on Wednesday August 14, 2019 @02:11PM (#20698305)
Radio silence seems to be thr MO of most businesses here in Seattle when you apply.

Getting anything back can be the equivalent of pulling teeth, it seems the current corporate culture at many businesses is to not tell the applicant the status of their application.
