On the other hand, is shows that pedestrians and cyclists have the same rate of fatalities per mile traveled.

So better to not walk or cycle and just stick to your car /s

To quickly do the calculations:

Walking: 5 km/h * 70kg = 97 kgm/s

e-bike: 20 km/h * 90 kg = 500 kgm/s

car: 50 km/h * 2000kg = 28,000 kgm/s

People sometimes die due to collisions pedestrians.

Should it be illegal for people to walk around drunk as well?

Completely agree for a push bike, but with an e-bike it's a different ball game.

Also in the US the max ebike power is 850W! More than enough to carry you up the steepest hills.

Some numbers from 2021 in the UK:

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/reported-road-casua...

> Chart 4 shows that, again, in terms of absolute numbers, cars are the vehicle type most often involved in fatal collisions when others are killed, followed by HGVs and Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs). Very few other road users are killed in collisions with pedal cyclists or pedestrians (5 and 6 respectively in 2021).

As the Dutch like to say: there is no such thing as bad cycling weather, only bad cycling clothes.

I would strongly recommond a pair of water/wind proof trousers to go over your regular trousers, if you don't already have some. This has lead to a much more pleasant riding experience, especially in winter. They aren't very practical on a regular bike as they make you uncomfortably hot, but on an e-bike, it's much less of a worry.

You can do multi-shot, which reduces the need for a good prompt upfont.
This is similar to my process.

However, I also use ChatGPT to make the updates for me, adding additional information and context, which I then ask to be integrated into the document (e.g. update the introduction to include...)

Why are you assuming that it will make writing worse not better?

Just because it can be used by non-experts to create crappy written work, it can also be used by people who work with it to augment and improve their existing writen work.

To my mind AI is a general purpose technology: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General-purpose_technology

I guess using this mental model, what you are worried about is the equivilent to pollution?

Did the printing press also increase the amount of crap in circulation?

Article about it here: https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/11/openai-shifts-from-nonprof...

It's just good at writing, it's contextual understanding is bad (at first).

But give it context and it flies. Ask it to write a cover letter for an engineering role, it will turn out mediocre crap.

Give it the actual role and your CV in the prompts, you're pretty much good to go. It's unique, you still control the narrative (please highlight my ability to work under pressure) and it's done in 10 secs.

I really don't see what isn't to love about that.

Also it usually writes better if you tell to write well.

Re:ChatGPT Can't Kill Anything Worth Preserving on Friday January 13, 2023 @11:46AM (#34370315)
But just give it context about what you want it to write and it will write about it. Obviously this is much easier if you have an existing body of work but you can still write to ChatGPT clumsily and it will often turn what you are trying to say into better prose.

My analogy is that it is to writing what the spell checker is to spelling. Very few people in the world have to be good at spelling anymore. Yeah everyone is okay, but it's not as valued a skill as it used to be. ChatGPT is doing the same for writing. Yes you need to be able to write to an okay level but you don't need to be able to write well, ChatGPT does that.

Re:ChatGPT Can't Kill Anything Worth Preserving on Friday January 13, 2023 @11:40AM (#34370230)
Maybe let's wait until people get good at using it?

It's been like a 1.5 months since it was released.

For me I am doing a lot my writing with it becuase my writing is worse than mediocre.

As long as you don't expect it to know things off the bat, it has a decent memory, though seems to be unaware of what it knows e.g. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34370057)

So you can just feed it the good info, get it to update things with more context and it will spit out pretty decent prose (though you have to ask to for it to be well written).

What do you know about the Stag Bus Building?

Probably the most interesting conversation I've had with ChatGPT so far.Me: Please tell we what you know about the Stag Bus BuildingChatGPT: I am not aware of any specific building called "Stag Bus Building." Could you provide more information or clarify what you are asking?Me: The Stag Bus Building is a building that aims to teache people about how the anatomy of stags can be used to build...

They seem to be re-nationalising the railways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_British_Railways

Maybe not: "The Transport Secretary announced on 19 October 2022 that the Transport Bill which would have set up GBR would not go ahead in the current parliamentary session."
