All other things being equal, eating more oranges (even salad) can very much result in being fatter.

Roughly speaking, 100 extra calories a day means 1 added pound of fat per month.

Re:Ask HN: Eating and coocking is so inneficient, better way? on Thursday January 27, 2022 @04:57AM (#30098410)
Regarding the impracticality of eating blended foods on the go: Portable and rechargeable blenders exists, and I've used them successfully.

They are smaller than what I need ("The Ultimate Food"), so I divide the ingredients in half and use two of them (so I take two blenders with me pre-loaded with the ingredients). This also helps just in case the battery of one runs out (a fully charged one is theoretically good for > 10 uses). I add the water only right before blending, and they can be cleaned up pretty easily after use by blending water only (which I drink).

I've tried several models, and ended up with this one:

... but BlendJet 2 was OK as well:

Re:Ask HN: What’s the best TV to buy? on Friday November 26, 2021 @02:18AM (#29348109)
I think what gp was saying is to buy a monitor instead of a TV, and I completely agree with this. All my screen purchases in years have been monitors.

3 Pixel phones and no issues here either. My old Nexus 5 finally bit the dust only last year.
This is a study where the majority of authors "have previously received funding from the Beef Checkoff, through the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association."

I have way more trust in nutritionfacts.org, which says the opposite:

"Studies on the emotional health and mood states of those eating plant-based diets suggest that eating less meat may not only be good for us physically, but good for us emotionally too."

Maybe you mean "The Longevity Project" book instead of "The Longevity Book"?

What grinder and grains do you usually use?
A portable projector might be a good solution as well.

But you're still left with the bad table an chair.

Re:Leaving Mozilla on Friday February 12, 2021 @02:30AM (#26111439)
Yeah, I also find this annoying.

But there is a setting to change this behavior: Options / Search / Show search suggestions ahead of browsing history in address bar results

The default for this should probably be off, not on.

There is a table here that shows what you're calculating by hand:

Re:Firefox Product Roadmap on Thursday March 22, 2018 @02:31PM (#16651269)
For Firefox to gain market share, it needs to target the average Joe, which I think they are trying. But in order to do that, it's not enough to make it work better than Chrome when you have 40 tabs open (less memory and CPU usage), they should also try to have the clean interface that Chrome has, or even cleaner, right after the installation.

Take the toolbar, for example: After installation it has all that unused space on the left and right sides of the address bar. This is probably to encourage customizations to it, but Joe doesn't care about that.

And then there are so many things on the toolbar that shouldn't be there. I think they should be hidden behind the sandwich menu, as the power users will know to add to the toolbar the ones that they need, and Joe wouldn't be overwhelmed by them.

Only these things should be present on the toolbar: back button, forward button, reload button (maybe), a home button - only if a home page was set, a clean omnibar, and the sandwich button.

Instead, even after trying to remove as much as I can from the toolbar, I still have: a non clean omnibar (two icons on its left end that seem to come from different universes, and too many things on it's right end - there should only be a dropdown button for the history at this end) and a more tools button. I counted and in total on the omnibar and the toolbar I have 4 buttons for "more stuff", instead of two (one dropdown for the history and the sandwich menu).

But I do think they are on the right track. I personally switched to Firefox from Chrome less than a year ago, and I'm not going back. Thank you, Mozilla, for all the good work that you did on Firefox!

Done.
I have another idea for a product that you could import and sell, instead of phone cases from China.

I don't know how to contact you directly, so maybe you can drop me an email. My email address is: my HN username at yahoo dot com.

Well, when I try to get something done in a calendar, having to do that remapping of the beginning and end of the weeks mentally... it gets in the way.
I'm from Romania, and Monday is the first day of the week here.

When we hear that in other countries Sunday is considered the first day of the week, sounds almost as weird as being told that they consider "z" to be the first letter of the alphabet.

Also, it is very frustrating when a UI uses Sunday as the first day of the week, and I encounter that quite often.

I had the same problem. I disabled my adblocker (ublock) and then it worked. Using latest stable Chrome under up-to-date Ubuntu.
Re:Use SQL subqueries to count distinct 50x faster on Friday January 24, 2014 @12:52PM (#7116233)
I don't understand what you mean by "group by let's you explicitly pick which columns to go by, whereas distinct uses them all". Can you give an example?
Re:Poll: How do you get physical exercise? on Tuesday February 08, 2011 @11:09AM (#2193350)
I do judo. It definitely works. I have better cardio, I'm stronger, more flexible, thinner and more confident. And it helped and inspired me to lose even more weight and try out other sports as well (alongside judo). Having a good trainer, and a good group of colleagues, helps a lot.

I think ESR started ForgePlucker to tackle this problem. It's a project for saving "project state" from various project hosting sites. Here is the announcement: http://esr.ibiblio.org/?p=1369

You're right, it's not Romanian.

And this was on hn before:

Not the most mind-blowing facts, just recent ones that come to mind:

1. The volume of water and air on Earth, compared to the Earth:

2. The relative sizes of Earth, Sun and the biggest known stars, and the fact that a passenger airplane would take 11,000 years to circle the biggest known star:

I also agree.

I've started training in judo a couple of years back. I love it and I recommend it to everyone.
