> But having briefly used Bumble, where the women must message the guy first, I never received a message better than 'hey, hows it going?'.

To be fair, Bumble doesn't include a lot of space for you to talk about your interests. If I can't get an idea for who you are based on a picture (yes, most guys only have one), what more can I say other than introduce myself? My go-to icebreaker is "Hi! I'm Ali. I'm bad at this."

Edit: I should also note that Bumble isn't a great dating app if you also interested in same-sex relationships. Not relevant to the parent comment, but relevant to me.

And I immediately regret getting back on social media after this. I was honestly hoping I wouldn't see this sort of thing on HN, as I have on Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook.
I live in South Florida, in Palm Beach County, where the bulk of these centers are. You see a lot of addicts. I don't know of any success stories to come out of them. But its a bit unsettling to be driving down I95 and see a billboard: "IMAGINE BEING SOBER". It's really sad and scary. Delray Beach used to be a nice place before the treatment centers came in, too.

I was looking for an apartment on Craigslist here not too long ago. More than half the rooms for rent I saw were "sober living" half way houses.

This is the reason I can't take Silicon Valley too seriously. It isn't the magic algorithm, it is that no sane person would want Pied Piper's storage because it does just what you said in the context of the show.
That makes more sense, less like the hate subs, and more like SRS. I guess I'm less exposed to it than the average Redditor.
How is /r/t_d different from /r/theredpill or any of the other racist/sexist/terrible subs? I haven't really seen any overflow in a lot of the not-default subs, but it could also be the subs I visit. I mostly stick to subs for games I play, programming, and a couple BP support subs.

For me, the crucial change of how I curate my subs happened when 2x became a default. I hated the sudden influx of bad posts, mansplaining, and terrible/abusive comments.

Re:The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates on Wednesday July 19, 2017 @08:52AM (#14803899)
I think you mean Sudafed. Sudafed is pseudophedrin, which is a great decongestant and used to make meth. In most states, you have to go up to the counter and ask for it, as well as supply ID and sign a form promising not to do anything illegal with it. Benadryl is diphenhydramine, which is just an antihistamine, and you can totally get in bottles (in the states). I tend to always have both on hand in case of an allergy attack. Granted, I'm more likely to reach for the Sudafed than the Benadryl. Benadryl has the side effect of intense drowsiness (I guess you can't sneeze if you're in a coma). I also buy a year's supply of Zyrtec and benadryl at Costco. It might seem like a "waste" but when you suffer from bad allergies, it really isn't.

I'm a long time pollen allergy sufferer living in the hell that is South Florida. I know my allergy meds.

Re:The state of Mac gaming on Monday July 17, 2017 @12:03PM (#14789781)
I always heard the Mac port of FF14 had issues. I just never knew what they were or how they affected the game until now. I think Square Enix demanding you buy a license for each platform you play the game on (non-Steam, Steam, Mac, PS4) is ridiculous and refuse to buy the same game twice. If I want to play on my Mac, I do the same thing I do for Overwatch, boot into Windows or play on my PC.
Re:It's been 191 days since Google Drive worked for me on Monday July 10, 2017 @01:00PM (#14737687)
I had to RMA 3 Nexus 6Ps. I'm not sure if it was bad luck or the 6P just had a bad build quality. The first one the backwards facing mic died causing it to be the world's most expensive text messaging device. The second had a battery issue that caused it to be a brick for about 2 days (this happened over New Years too). The third, bootloop.

The process is relatively painless, with the notable exception being the 2nd time my Nexus shat the bed. It is unreasonable to tell a person "You have to live without a phone for a week." when they rely on UBER/Lyft for work. I had to buy a $100 burner Android. I'm sort of hoping I have a problem with my Pixel. I accidentally chipped the screen at the gym, and it bothers me slightly.

I'm still running on a i5-3550k. I really don't feel compelled to upgrade because I haven't seen a performance drop in gaming yet.
I don't see the value prop in things like Blue Apron. It seems overpriced for what it is. Between my roommate and myself, we cook every night (trading off nights), and take the leftovers for lunches the next day. $60 for a curated box of groceries for 3 meals just doesn't seem worth it. I spend half that weekly, snacks included.
Re:Nintendo Announces SNES Classic, Comes with 21 Games on Monday June 26, 2017 @03:00PM (#14639320)
What really sucks is that the 3DS special editions I loved were JP only, such as the Pikachu ones and the Eevee one. Granted, I didn't totally love the Eevee one. My favorite is that the R/B 20th anniversary editions are only $300 on Amazon. And here's probably the coolest one for an easy $340 [0]. Sucks to be a Pokemon fan.

Re:Nintendo Announces SNES Classic, Comes with 21 Games on Monday June 26, 2017 @01:21PM (#14638550)
Except for the DS line. I never had trouble finding any of the non-special editions anywhere. If you want a Zelda or Pokemon one though (that isn't a 2DS, the 2DS that shipped with X/Y preinstalled was incredibly common) you are going to have a bad time.
Re:A parametric version of the Spectral font on Wednesday June 21, 2017 @03:25PM (#14607077)
I really hope so. The web will be an unusable mess to me if fonts change size on scroll like in their demo page.
Re:A parametric version of the Spectral font on Wednesday June 21, 2017 @02:56PM (#14606867)
I really hope this doesn't become popular like Lato and Montserrat. This is horrible to me as a dyslexic. It's near unreadable and distracting with the constant size changes.

I have bipolar 1. What I do is "go meta" and think over the situation and discuss it, how I feel, and how I perceive the situation with a friend or counselor to sanity check. There are times when this fails (co-morbid anxiety disorders), but I find being able to talk through a situation helps immensely. Most of the time, I can even reason out of an anxiety attack or panic attack if I have support close by.
Re:India Is Winning Its War on Human Waste on Thursday April 27, 2017 @02:04PM (#14213524)
My rats were litter trained actually. It took literally 1 day. During free-roaming time, I would just open the cage and put a ladder up to the bottom floor of the cage. They'd return home when they had to poop or pee.

However, pet rats might not be a good example here. This might be anecdata, but my girls would eat, shit, and sleep in the litter box. I had to buy grated ferret litter boxes to keep one from getting sick. She got E.Coli from sleeping in the litter box, and it presented as a URI. Talking with other rat owners, this wasn't uncommon behavior either.

Re:Ride-hailing apps may help to curb drunk driving on Thursday April 06, 2017 @02:38PM (#14053286)
I take a short fare from my work to the train station near daily. If I am contacted by my driver, I never tell them where I am going. I have had MANY drivers, both Uber and Lyft, cancel because it was a sub-$10 fare. This is in Fort Lauderdale, so it isn't like its out in the boonies.

That being said, I might have waited longer, but I always got service when I did live in rural Broward. I was 20+ minutes from everything though, so it was a guaranteed high fare ride for the driver.

A tenured professor at the university I attended was fired for continuously harassing Sandy Hook families for death certificates of their children. It was a terrible cry for attention for his blog. I'm not capable of doing the mental gymnastics that makes his actions okay.

> Six years for a degree in political science. You have to actively try to take that long to graduate. Maybe he changed majors.

I disagree. Life circumstances can keep you from graduating as well.

I spent nearly 7 on a CS degree. There were a few hold ups. The biggest being until VERY recently, I was unmedicated with Bipolar Disorder. I would sign up for classes while manic, and barely scrape by or fail when depressed. It has taken me 5 years to get a proper diagnosis and find the right meds. Meanwhile, I still tried to do my best in the classes I was attending.

Another reason it took me so long, I attended community college and got a 2 year degree in programming I was told would directly translate to my BS in CS. This was not the case. I found that my university only took certain credits off of my AS, effectively putting me at about a year of coursework when I was under the impression I had 2.

None of this was me trying to take that long to graduate. I do take some of the responsibility for it, I could have done better to get out of bed and go to class some days. I could have done more research about PBSC's transfer degree. I could have fought harder for the right diagnosis when I was 18 and everything started happening.

How does TWEWY: Solo Remix work? I have the DS game and it seemed pretty heavy on your partner also doing the thing. That being said, TWEWY:SR is one of the reasons I wish I had an iPhone or iPad. I loved the game, and wish so hard for a sequel. It was one of Squeenix's best games in aesthetic, sound, and story.
Re:Why I don't believe in Uber's Success on Thursday January 19, 2017 @03:29PM (#13439200)
> They've pretty much nailed the UX in their app ...

Ehhhh....I disagree because I have a less than stellar UX every time I use it. However, my situation is more or less an edge case. I rely on Uber to take me from the train station to work every morning. The train station is right by FLL. It's even called the Fort Lauderdale AIRPORT Station at Dania Beach. I have to call the drivers and tell them I'm at the train station and not the airport every time, and sometimes, they'll cancel or just go to the airport anyway. The GPS will place me at the airport sometimes too for extra fun. I've reported this several times to Uber, and it's still not fixed. It's also important to note a self driving car would make my situation worse (no one to contact when/if the app gets it wrong).

I would switch to Lyft, but after having a driver flat out refuse a fare, and leave me stranded in Miami, I'm not so keen on that idea.
