News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I literally just made it up: Bring your own Agent. It was a poor attempt at making fun of the current SaaS landscape. Although I would be surprised to be the first one to have ever used that acronym.
So is this yet another SaaS product that's going to attempt to charge me for token usage? Sorry to sound negative, but nowadays it's an instant turn off because it's like the current subscription crisis on steroids. BYOA should be a default.

To be more constructive: let's say I have 2 frontier subscriptions and I end up with 20% left on each at the end of the week. It feels awful knowing that I would _love_ to use that with Momentic but I can't because I have to pay for yet another set of proprietary non-transferable tokens. It's like dealing with airline rewards.

Maybe we'd have more money to fix the problem if "nursing at home" wasn't one of the main medicare fraud schemes that has persisted for years now.
I can imagine some "Hollywood hacker" scene where the guy steals an encrypted USB and proceeds to break into it.

"How did you get the data?"

"It was just an unencrypted SD card inside"

Not very exciting, but I guess just as accurate as reality!

That sounds a lot harder to do then putting a number on a page.

What would they do with my bank account and routing number?
Re:American views of higher ed decline, once again on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:54AM (#50304822)
Not going to college was probably one of the better decisions I made. I chose to join the US Navy instead as a submariner (nuclear). Rather than signing up for 100k student debt, I was signing a 100k enlistment bonus. I was able to purchase my first house at 22. I was then immediately picked up by Google once my enlistment expired.

Obviously everyone's situation will be different. But now having been in the software engineering realm for many years, the level of maturity and execution I see in college graduates is deeply concerning. I generally outperform not necessarily because I'm smarter, but mostly because I just have strong discipline, communication, and conflict resolution skills gained from years in the military.

I would imagine that AI completely wrecking the consumer PC market is finally starting to show in real world value. I think it outpaced whatever other profits Intel was predicting to make.
I was shocked this wasn't flagged into oblivion. NYPost is notoriously wrongspeak.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:22PM (#50297042)
There were more today, as well. Polymarket, for example: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50294287. What a finale to Black October.
Re:Duet is the future of chatbot interaction on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:12PM (#50295126)
I have to agree. I've been using it for a few days now after coming from GrokBot, then Muse, then Dots. None really clicked for me within the first day. Duet seems different. I haven't quite pegged it, but off the top of my hand:

1. Yes, channels really are useful

2. It does seem to be using Opus 5.5 behind the scenes because, shockingly, it's not screwing everything up like the others usually did

3. Agree that the answers are short and to the point. If you want more info, you just pop open whatever task (separate from channels) it started and you can see what it's doing.

Seems like more time in the oven might have paid off here.

Also, to be clear, this is purely used as a personal assistant by me. I still use omp+Paseo for all of my day to day work. I find the separation of concerns kind of nice.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:05PM (#50295011)
Still remember being a small kid running around the house as my dad had TNG playing on the TV. Patrick was pretty formative in the early years for me.

I also really liked him in a Christmas Carrol (1999). I thought he played the role really well.

Re:Hackers expose the identities of more than 40k DHS employees on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:57PM (#50292254)
I was just watching a video the other day of ICE protestors blocking NYC bridge traffic. Tons of people coming out of their vehicles pleading with them to move so they could get to their job, drop their kid off, deliver a DoorDash order, etc.

I'm all for fighting against your enemies, even if I don't see it exactly the same way. But when I see stuff like that, it just seems totally disconnected from doing anything meaningful towards their enemies (besides making more of them, I guess).

I mean I don't know what else that sentence means. Are you confused?
Re:Democrats' Secret Effort to Stack Alaska's Ballot on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:19PM (#50291510)
I mean Republicans have done tons of corrupt things. Not really open to debate for me. It's just they always sit on the top page of HN for a day if not more then a day due to hundreds of upvotes. But then a bombshell report like this comes out and its all crickets.

It doesn't help it's the NYT, so the usual crowd that just denounces things on the basis of the publisher doesn't have any ammunition.

Yeah, it's funny people think upvotes mean anything on this website. It's so easy to farm so long as you say the "correct" thing.
Nah, I like HN. Doesn't mean I can't be saddened by the redditors that are trying to make it worse.

Besides, continually engaging with people who literally believe the complete opposite of me is healthy. It's just harder nowadays because people refuse to engage on the basis I'm a Nazi or something.

Also, a ton of interesting articles never make it because it goes against the grain. Like this recent one I found: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50291006. Stunning journalism. Will absolutely go nowhere here because it says "Democrat" instead of "Conservative." Tis the way of HN these days. But, doesn't mean the marginalized crowd shouldn't keep trying :)

Pretty crazy. But also heavily against the echo chamber here, so it will silently fall to oblivion.

Re:Leak website releases data on DHS employees on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:32PM (#50282884)
The whole epitome of this thread is that my enemies got doxx'd and so now I shall jump through dozens of logical hoops in order to justify it.

Oh, also, if you're not happy with this, you obviously must agree with everything they are doing.

Re:Leak website releases data on DHS employees on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @08:02PM (#50282684)
> It’s the line the government uses to justify dragnet mass surveillance.

Agreed. But I don't see how that justifies your original comment.

Re:Leak website releases data on DHS employees on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:59PM (#50282666)
> If those employees didn't do anything wrong, they have nothing to worry about.

That's the line I responded to, in case you didn't read it.

Literally had to scroll to the bottom of the thread to find any sort of sensible comment. HN is in such sad state these days. Sorry you were downvoted by the radicals.
Re:Leak website releases data on DHS employees on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:54PM (#50282617)
I'm sure this line works well with doxx'ing victims.
What a quaint rebuttal.
It has been said, ad naesuem, all over HN for weeks now. I pegged the OP wrong.
Yes, because debunking something is equivalent to perpetuating it. Can't imply someone might be racist because then you perpetuate racism. That literally makes no sense lol.
Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:57AM (#50259422)
Amazing that you continue to ignore the strawman, lol. Clearly you're trolling.
