News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

For sure. They are both a shit-ton of work, but so far it has been well-worth it. Can think of any other way I'd rather spend my time. Just wish I knew more folks going through the same thing.

Any early-stage founders with kiddos want to start a group together?

Servers down with a diaper blow-out on the side? Been there.Being an early-stage founder can be a wild ride. And for me, with two kids on top of that, it feels like insane mode. Personally, I don’t know many other people in the same boat, but really wish that I did.I’m trying to find a small group of founder+parents open to meeting regularly to connect and share how things are really going....

Re:Why use www? on Saturday January 30, 2016 @09:34PM (#11004971)
Empirically, www seems to have won -- a large fraction of the top consumer sites online have picked it. One could make UI/UX-type arguments for no-www, but I sites like Facebook and Pinterest have some of the best UI/UX people in the world, and have still picked www.

What is this the case? What is the top reasons for www? Is it the cookie thing? I've heard that www lets you play DNS trics also, but haven't seen more details on this.

I'd love to hear more about this choice from people who understand the decisions at top Internet companies.

Sorry, not in the near future.

If you look into the Twitter API and have some experience fetching and parsing websites, it isn't too bad. If you don't, its a fun learning experience :)

Hey HN! My friend Leslie and I created Venture News to easily keep up-to-date with the buzz in the VC community. It is great for people who are interested in VC/startups but don't use Twitter, follow all the VCs on Twitter, or have time to keep up with their timeline.

Since a good fraction of y'all keeps up w/ VC and startup news, it'd be helpful to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Re:Show HN: never/over, a fan-curated shrine to Daft Punk on Wednesday January 07, 2015 @07:30PM (#8854318)
Some friends and I all think Daft Punk is pretty awesome, and have been imagining what a collaborative multimedia shrine to Daft Punk might look like. What if there was one place online created by the fans to represent Daft Punk media/culture? What would it look like? What would it feel like?

This is our first take at it, and we'd love to hear your thoughts, questions, and critiques..

100% agree on How to Win Friends and Influence People. Classic book. The title makes the book sound dubious, but it really isn't.
Friendship is a two-way street. If you learn someone is terrible, you can choose not to be friends with them.
Re:Poll: Do you actually use the product you are working on? on Sunday January 26, 2014 @05:43PM (#7127389)
I've been building Soulmix [1], an online tool for organizing and sharing great stuff on the web.

I use it every day. Most content isn't notable enough that I would want to come back to it, or keep notes on it. However, a few times a day, I stumble across something that I really like, and then post it to on Soulmix [2].

If you want to give the beta a spin, just request an invite, and I'll send one to your email.

Re:Failed to delight. Post-mortem of Delight IO on Sunday January 26, 2014 @01:50AM (#7124168)
I know what you are saying, but as a new blogger, I understand how it can be difficult to get stuff out. If I had to choose, I'd rather more people write their stories, even if the writing quality isn't that good. In general, I can pick up what bloggers are trying to say, and over time, they tend to get better.
Re:Failed to delight. Post-mortem of Delight IO on Sunday January 26, 2014 @01:45AM (#7124160)
Enjoyed the write-up Thomas -- thanks for opening up about what happened, and look forward to part 2.

I added this to a list of startup postmortems I've been keeping notes on: http://www.soulmix.com/remix/363

(I should probably disclose that I building Soulmix also :)

Re:Is Your Product A Vitamin Or A Painkiller? on Wednesday January 15, 2014 @04:12PM (#7066195)
Nir Eyal behavior design work includes an interesting thought on this: apps that are vitamins can become painkillers.

If you haven't gone through his slide deck, I'd highly recommend it. He goes through the vitamin/painkiller part pretty early in the slide deck.
