Their help page technically says you can use the same phone number on up to 10 accounts, but that hasn't been the case in 4–5 years or more. It's more like 2–4 accounts per number allowed in my experience, and there is a few week cooldown on reusing a number even if you've already removed it from all accounts.

I don't think you can use the same email on multiple accounts at the same time, but using address extensions or creating new emails is easy.

You can use AdGuard to block ads in Safari.
I suppose it does raise the bar somewhat, but there are many websites that sell access to phone numbers that specifically work on major services like Google for as low as 10 cents per text.
Re:Post-processing is ruining iPhone photos on Sunday January 08, 2023 @07:14AM (#34298450)
yeah, they avoid any gplv3 software on macos, not sure if ios has any that's even gplv2.
Re:Post-processing is ruining iPhone photos on Sunday January 08, 2023 @07:12AM (#34298438)
it's unix (bsd), not linux.

also, the minimum is actually 4 digits. you can tap "passcode options" when setting/changing passcode. not sure how much better that would be though. i generally like face id but i do hope they add in-display touch id sometime.

I knew about `:x`, but I had no idea there was an actual distinction beyond just being a shortcut for `:wq`.
Re:Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again? on Thursday January 05, 2023 @11:27AM (#34262213)
It's common for them to not include more than original and/or English audio, but most competent groups will generally include all available subtitles at least.
it does, but to use hashes you'd have to pin exact versions of every dependency, which is generally undesirable for a library

i don't understand why you're being downvoted, that's exactly what it is for. android users can use do not disturb as well.
Re:Privacy Is OK on Friday December 30, 2022 @09:37AM (#34185379)
how exactly does it violate your privacy to be merely allowed (not forced) to discuss your salary?
Re:The unintended consequences of blocking IP addresses on Friday December 30, 2022 @08:14AM (#34184697)
it definitely should be possible at a router level, why should i be forced to configure each device individually? that said, obviously it should be possible to override on the device level, like it already is most of the time.
Re:Golang is evil on shitty networks on Thursday December 29, 2022 @09:00PM (#34180836)
it seems to me like systems like these are the exception rather than the rule. you can always turn off nagle's algorithm if you have something really latency-sensitive, but it should not be off by default.

200 ms is not the end of the world in most cases, it's far better than relying on everything doing its own buffering correctly and suffering a massive performance penalty when something inevitably doesn't.

Re:Detecting the use of “curl | bash” server side on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @09:08AM (#34148753)
I think this could be avoided by using this syntax instead:

    bash < <(curl -fsSL example.com/foo.sh)
it's generally a good idea to do

    echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
for benchmarks to avoid disk cache speeding things up, i'm surprised it wasn't mentioned
the title is misleading, it makes it sound like tutanota had an age restriction and three blocked them because of that, but instead three put it behind an age gate.
the "use android" argument is getting really tiring. as someone who used to be an android user for years and still somewhat keeps up with the ecosystem, ios and most apps written for it (including major apps like twitter) are far more polished than whatever mess google is doing with android (and manufacturers make it even worse). i much prefer having the polished ios experience while being able to sideload and possibly even jailbreak my phone. and then there's imessage too, though we'll see what happens with that after the dma.

and the argument about "giving developers power" simply doesn't hold any water. android openly allows sideloading with the google play store having very similar rules to the app store, and yet i can count the number of major apps that force or even offer a sideloaded version on one hand. the only ones that come to mind are fortnite (removed from google play) and telegram (on play store, but sideloaded version has faster updates and less censorship).

> They recently got rid of recurring subscriptions because they said they didn't want to store any PII.

as much as this may be a noble goal, as a user i want to have the option of a recurring subscription, especially if i pay monthly (which i prefer to, unless i'm really committed to a service or the yearly subscription is cheap enough that i'm sure i won't regret it). if it's just one or two services doing this it's not a huge deal, but imagine getting emails from tens of different services each month to renew, especially if you have to log in and enter your credit/debit card details on each one separately. is there a reason they can't simply store a token from stripe/paypal/etc, or is that still considered PII?

Re:Shutting down our unencrypted public DNS service on Tuesday December 13, 2022 @12:23PM (#33972180)
you may have a point about amplification attacks, but that's not the main reason DoH/DoT exists. simply using legacy DNS over TCP will not magically make it encrypted.
why does not having any nyc employees yet exempt them if they are hiring nyc-based people?
> if you advertise a job respond to applicants quickly - as in within minutes of the application

i mean it's nice to get a response as soon as possible but this seems completely unrealistic... it seems perfectly normal to expect a wait of a few days or weeks to me

Re:Ask HN: Developer abused “sign in with GitHub”? on Friday December 09, 2022 @05:19PM (#33927144)
that was a thing with openid but it pretty much died out.
> Based on the fact that they've gone through several waves of layoffs and nothing significant has broken yet.

it hasn't been long enough to be able to say that yet. if you get rid of all firefighters, that doesn't mean the whole world will immediately catch fire.
