I wrote a bit about why in the readme (see archiving vs backup). In my opinion, syncing, snapshots, and backup tools like restic are great but fundamentally solve a different problem from what I want out of an archive tool like aegis, git-annex, or boar[2].
I want my backups to be automatic and transparent, for that restic is a great tool. But for my photos, my important documents and other immutable data, I want to manually accept or reject any change that happens to them, since I might not always notice when something changes. For example if I fat finger an rm, or a bug in a program overrides something and I don't notice.
Note for people still using macos, you can enable many more readline shortcuts by creating a special file at ~/Library/KeyBindings/DefaultKeyBinding.dict. I made a repo that simplifies the process to just a single git clone when setting up a new machine: https://github.com/alexdavid/keybindings
If this had been published first, and github1s came along afterward to make it easier for users who don't set $EDITOR I'd be just as happy that it makes development more inclusive for all, not matter what the tools one prefers.
I'd love to see a mercurial version as well :)
You inspired me to write my own. Here is a 9-line shell script version of git-peak: https://git.sr.ht/~alexdavid/dotfiles/tree/master/bin/git-pe...
It doesn't do any fancy tarball magic for Github links, but the shallow clone works fast enough for me - sub 3s on modestly sized repos (especially on non-github repos since github is fairly slow to clone/push/pull).
I believe this is because Firefox assumes it's the responsibility of the compositor you are running to properly vsync, but if you're not running a compositor you can turn on this option.
Since we're not opinionated you should be able to pull/push from any git server.
But you can also enable vim mode from the editor settings if that's your jam.
