Re:Feeling Lost on Friday July 31, 2026 @09:53AM (#49123165)
Hey! Author of the post here. I noticed a tiny bit of traffic to this post from HN and just wanted to say thanks for sharing :)
Two that I use pretty frequently:

1. https://shopmath.app - I got tired of converting decimal to fraction for woodworking/renovations, and I wanted to round calculations to the nearest 16th, so I prompted this.

2. https://youtubetimestamps.app/ - I use davinci resolve and wanted an easy way to convert my EDL markers into timestamps for youtube.

Re:Okay, I Like WezTerm on Monday August 12, 2024 @03:03PM (#41228105)
As a fellow iTerm2 to Wezterm convert this hit home. There’s loads of useful stuff in here, too! Thanks for the write up. I particularly like the projects setup. I built Weztermocil to achieve something similar that uses itermocil’s configs since that’s what we use at work.

Re:Ask HN: What does your sleep hygiene look like? on Monday July 08, 2024 @06:57PM (#40910672)
Yeah, that sounds like a wild shift! In my teens I used to be nocturnal and loved the quiet. Nocturnal living definitely takes its toll though. The body needs sunlight. I hope you're able to find a pattern that works well for you! Maybe you can become a 4am–7pm person and get the best of both.
Re:Ask HN: What does your sleep hygiene look like? on Monday July 08, 2024 @06:54PM (#40910649)
That's fair! Love that take. It's what my partner does and it works wonders for her.

I'm glad that works for you! Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for me and still led to some pretty groggy/brain-foggy days. Hence the "optimization" to understand which levers to tweak. They've now just become a habit and helped me stay in tune with why certain things might be off.

Ask HN: What does your sleep hygiene look like?

Hey HN,I'd love to hear from others about their sleep hygiene. I'm mostly curious to hear how people are tackling sleep hygiene to see if there are other things I could add to my arsenal to continue improving my own :).I'm specifically curious about:- What aspects of sleep do you optimize, if any? - Examples: Deep sleep, duration, specific windows, etc. - Why do you care about sleep hygiene,...

Cool idea! My friends and I have chatted about building something similar, though with a coaching focus. Specifically for use with spray walls/kilterboards/etc.

It could be interesting to combine something like this with an analysis tool. Analyse a climbers attempts or successes and compare it to the beta figured out by the model. Then offer tips on body positioning or technique based on your weight/height/strength.

This _probably_ counts?

I moved from iTerm2 -> Wezterm and missed itermocil. So, I wrote a replacement specifically for Wezterm called weztermocil.

Re:A fourteen-day free trial ain’t gonna cut it on Monday May 06, 2024 @01:15PM (#40276919)
Yeah, exactly. Their whole thing is to get ~30 days ahead, too. I think 60–90 days would be a better hook and almost guarantee an "ah ha" moment. Everyone I've spoken to that's had YANB "click" was in that time frame, myself included.

I wish I could see how a trial length change would affect their conversions.

Nice write-up! This is a great example of throwing out "best practices" and being truly user/product-centred. Even down to your trial strategy.

It reminds me of YNAB's trial[^1] strategy of offering 34 days. It gives folks just enough time with their app and process. I wish YNAB's trial extended to ~60 days since my "ah ha!" moment was only around then. That's another conversation, though.

Re:Wait, What's a Bookmarklet? on Wednesday October 25, 2023 @12:35PM (#38014648)
I haven't used them heavily, but when I was doing user-research for a small startup, I needed to get timestamped links from Google Drive videos to add to interview notes. It was a huge pain in the ass. So I wrote a little bookmarklet to copy the URL with timestamp to clipboard.
Re:Wheat Gluten Spurs Brain Inflammation (In Mice) on Wednesday August 09, 2023 @12:33PM (#37065164)
It's the same in Canada (Montreal, specifically)—if not worse. It's getting better, but oh man, the amount of "gluten friendly" restaurants dripping in cross contamination is horrid. The amount of trust I have for most restaurants, even "gluten free" ones, is pretty much at zero.
Re:Wheat Gluten Spurs Brain Inflammation (In Mice) on Wednesday August 09, 2023 @11:36AM (#37064295)
This isn't exactly true. The blood test and biopsy can _sometimes_ find celiac disease, but it _cannot_ diagnose gluten intolerance/sensitivity.

If you have an intolerance or sensitivity, the blood test will come back negative as your body doesn't produce antibodies indicative of celiac, and your villi remain intact, so the biopsy will show nothing. However, you can still have some incredibly unpleasant side-effects from eating gluten.

Even in folks with celiac disease, it can go under the radar. If you've been eating a gluten free diet prior to the tests, the results can come back negative, but that doesn't mean you don't have it.

Source: I have celiac disease, and it was a pain in the ass to get diagnosed.

Re:Gut–Brain Axis on Sunday June 25, 2023 @04:13PM (#36472128)
I developed a panic disorder over the pandemic. Did all the things—meditation, therapy, vitamins, minerals and medication, in that order. All of them took more and more of the edge off, but it wasn't until I started an SNRI that I was able to better pull the signal from my gut. It turns out I have at the very least non-celiac gluten intolerance. Once I went on a strict gluten free diet practically all of my physical and mental symptoms have vanished.

Now, when I consume something with gluten accidentally, I'm met with pretty much all of the fun depression, anxiety and physical pain I was feeling before. Our gut health influences _a lot_ more than we probably realize.
