Re:My Startup has 30 Days to Live on Tuesday June 25, 2013 @10:49AM (#5939822)
Can't make payroll? Complain about being stretched thin?

Start a useless blog!

Perfect!

Re:The new php.net on Tuesday June 25, 2013 @10:31AM (#5939663)
I don't find it easier at all, the purple blocks / elements overwhelm the content.

The old site looks way better for 'information consuming' than the new version.

My two cents.

Re:The new php.net on Tuesday June 25, 2013 @01:39AM (#5937742)
They are trying WAY too hard to be like other sites and copied a lot of elements but under no vision or creative guidance new design looks horrible.

Old one was at least professional and to the point, this one is pure garbage and looks like a web site for a grape drink.

Re:Airbnb vs. Hotels: A Price Comparison on Monday June 17, 2013 @03:23PM (#5895328)
Should have called the owner, AirBnB and your credit card company.

In that order.

'A player' will say nope and then work for your competition.

Not to mention that 'working' != 'working', I can sit in the office all day and produce 10 lines of shitty code in between of talking to my co workers and surfing the web.

That would make me an A player right? Wrong.

People who know what they are doing, will plan it properly so they don't have to work after hours and set proper expectations.

But if you actually expect them to work late and on the weekends all the time then you should be paying for it.

My life is not a charity.

Re:"Microsoft engineer" on Xbox1 on Thursday June 13, 2013 @07:34PM (#5877358)
Speaking as a PC gamer.. Steam who everybody 'loves' does not allow you to transfer games.

You can't even transfer games from one account to another account that YOU owe. It's not allowed.

Just some perspective into this. And I don't agree there should be ANY limitations for hard media.

Re:Hackers vs. suits: Why nerds become leakers on Thursday June 13, 2013 @03:02PM (#5875924)
Both suits and hackers leak information, the difference is suits leak it to private parties that they can benefit from and hackers do it publicly.
Re:Is Big Data turning government into 'Big Brother'? on Friday June 07, 2013 @01:26PM (#5840242)
"Big Data"

I prefer my data medium rare, please.

Most of the offers I got were below market value, I only received one offer that was /kind/ of close to what people are paying good engineers in NYC but they did not want to continue since apparently they were looking for somebody to work 80 hour weeks.

No thanks.

Re:Why I abandoned my startup on Monday May 13, 2013 @09:36PM (#5702576)
Sounds to me like his girlfriend got him jealous.

Seriously, if he could quit a start up and go into charity over night I don't think his bank account was hurting.

It always amusing to me how people try to pet their egos, oh hey guys I'm loaded so I'm going to quit my job and sell water to poor kids.

Please look how kind I am, everybody else is so selfish and stuck at work because they are not loaded!

Re:On To Google Ventures on Monday May 06, 2013 @01:36PM (#5663583)
And credibility of Google Ventures went down today.

His posts were filled with clueless rants with a side of his small minded ego. The guy is full of him self without accomplishing anything that would warrant that.

It actually annoyed me so much I wrote a grease monkey script years ago to block his garbage from TechCrunch (before they redesigned):

Re:Worthless security claims on Monday May 06, 2013 @10:38AM (#5662623)
Most of his examples are using copy and paste of the logo and none of the companies claim that there are 'secure' by using that logo.

It's more of a conversion/marketing tactic as it's well known that showing such badge on your checkout page increases revenue.

Re:How to gracefully handle cache expiration on Friday May 03, 2013 @10:48PM (#5653745)
Thanks!

For which operation are you suggesting to use add() method? As far as I can see (and I just walked in so I might be overlooking something) you want to set data (overwrite) if it exist.

Add() will fail if key already exist (which should be the case under full load) and you will end up using set() anyways.

Re:How to gracefully handle cache expiration on Friday May 03, 2013 @06:09PM (#5652942)
Hey guys, this is probably the biggest technical blog post I wrote and I'm looking for some tips/feedback on how to improve my writing skills.

I'm also aware there are other ways to approach this problem, this post is aimed to people who are not very advanced when it comes to caching dynamic data.

Thanks!

Re:Twitter chooses Drupal for their official blog on Thursday May 02, 2013 @10:57AM (#5644847)
I just pictured somebody at Twitter suggesting that they use Tumblr and getting death stares from everybody in the room.
Re:Memcache top on Thursday May 02, 2013 @10:51AM (#5644807)
Cool tool, a bit of a pointless jab at Etsy.

I don't know how it queries up Memcached but it's probably a good idea to see how it affects performance of it before running it against a production cache pool.

Just a thought.

Re:FreeBSD expands activities as funds flow in on Wednesday May 01, 2013 @01:13PM (#5639239)
That's kind of a hard question to answer without knowing your definition and requirements for 'web development'.

First, keep in mind that some of the packages will simply not run on FreeBSD because it's often overlooked by developers. Same logic applies for technical support for applications that are running on FreeBSD powered machine.

You also will need to learn how port system works on FreeBSD and it might be a weird learning curve. Same applies for kernel patching/upgrading/etc.

Re:PHP Commandments on Tuesday April 30, 2013 @10:35AM (#5632377)
Most of the items on that list are not specific to PHP.

Some of the stuff pointed out is up for discussion (I hate when people use the word 'NEVER' when they are writing about their point of view, especially when programming is a topic).

Re:Calling All Hackers on Monday April 29, 2013 @02:30PM (#5627825)
I 100% agree with you, to compare programming to 'bicycle repair' is a new kind of stupid, unless you both pair programming a hello world application.
Re:Calling All Hackers on Monday April 29, 2013 @02:26PM (#5627808)
Am I the only one annoyed by blatant overuse of the word 'hacker' in this article?

I'm starting to group this word with catastrophes such as 'rockstar' and 'ninja' now.

Re:Stop Designing Fragile Web APIs on Monday April 22, 2013 @01:31PM (#5590569)
After building out dozen of API's I have came to conclusion that in order to design a great API you have to start with writing a client for it first.
Re:Don't send me a message to tell me I have a message on Thursday April 18, 2013 @03:52PM (#5572685)
If you are discussing something private that relates to your account/server/network, the rule of thumb is to avoiding sending anything over the e-mail for security reasons.
Re:How the Productivity Myth is Killing Your Startup on Wednesday April 17, 2013 @03:50PM (#5566671)
TLDR: how bad planning and incompetence prevents you from completing tasks on time, news at 11.

Same old topic that has been discussed over and over before.

Re:How to work with Software Engineers on Monday April 15, 2013 @10:30AM (#5551649)
Why don't you just talk to him about it? Too hard?
So they promoted applications that users (that liked what they saw) downloaded. And that impacted numbers of downloads in the application store.

That's his whole beef and the reason for calling them a 'black hat' marketing company?

Using that logic, if application is featured on a popular web site where company paid PR to advertise makes the company in question a black hat marketing company who is fucking everything up for everybody else?

Bullshit.

Re:Work Hard and Play Just Enough on Thursday April 11, 2013 @01:00PM (#5533213)
Nobody is saying that you have to lock your self in a box and do your work.

If you need 10 hours to do something that somebody does in 6. Maybe, just maybe you should focus on your work instead of 'culture' especially if the goal of a start up to succeed.

I have never heard of a single case where something got acquired for it's culture. Have you?

But let me be clear. My point is that measuring somebody by the time they spend in the office only rewards people who sit in the office the most.

That's not really what their job is right? Because if that's the case I can hire few people to sit in the office for really cheap.

Re:Work Hard and Play Just Enough on Thursday April 11, 2013 @11:09AM (#5532409)
I always laugh at people who say how many hours they worked per day like it's an achievement of any sort.

Anybody can 'sit' at their desk for 10 hours that says absolutely nothing about you or your job performance but hey you can brag about how many hours you worked for.

I will come in focused, do all the work I have to do while you bullshit with co-workers or talk about doing something for the 10th time without doing anything and leave on time.

That what sucks about engineering/start-ups, if person is mediocre all they have to do is stay in the office the longest and even if they can't beat the quality and output of an engineer who does 9-5 that's overlooked by 'hey I 'worked' for 10 hours!'

Re:Git tips to stop you getting fired on Monday April 08, 2013 @01:18PM (#5513034)
Looks like your probation period is over.
While I agree it's not an Apache exploit, your post makes no sense. SSH is often tainted via permission elevation due to vulnerabilities in other daemons.
