These robots are all over the place around here. They use the sidewalks, but beyond that they need space for deployment and space to wait while idle. They don’t just pop out from a little tiny door like in Star Wars.

In my old neighborhood they had a forward operating base in an empty lot along a moderately busy street, one with plenty of foot traffic on the sidewalks. People often use the lot to play with their dogs.

Every day a truck pulls up, taking up several public parking spots, and over the course of an hour, the driver unloads 20-30 delivery bots. Then the bots line themselves up in the grass just off the sidewalk. This acts as their home base while they wait for deliveries.

It’s possible the operators have a deal with whoever owns the land, but it seems more like they’re opportunistically exploiting any resources they can find in order to reduce costs. Which is pretty much in line with what I’d expect from a startup.

Yes people spent that much for a TV in 1997.

A “dog-eared corner” in fact. The readme is painful to read if you have an aversion to Claude prose.

Supermarkets are just agriculture for normies. Look ma, no subsistence farming.
I don’t disagree that China has a lot of qualities that are pushing it past the US in many ways, but come on. The “oldest and most durable civilization humanity has ever created” is kind of ridiculous. First of all, what even is a civilization in terms of continuity? Is the People’s Republic of China the same civilization as Ming China? What about Yuan China? And if so, is western civilization not a durable civilization?

Stick to facts and not breathless brown-nosing and you’ll be a lot less off-putting.

Apple is the only big tech company that is not EXTREMELY incentivized to sell your data.

Re:Biology Might Not Be Quantum, but Its Math Is Quantumlike on Sunday September 27, 2026 @03:11PM (#49869848)
Apparently that finding was itself found to be incorrect. The article doesn’t specifically debunk coherence as the mechanism behind photosynthesis, but it does imply that the real mechanism was discovered to be something else.
Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Thursday September 24, 2026 @09:30PM (#49839155)
Sorry, but what’s “install a plugin” in rails? That’s not a thing; not even a thing someone who’s ever worked on a rails app would say by mistake.

iOS has this functionality built in.

He clearly meant getting married has no friction, while getting out of a marriage has quite a bit. Presumably there’s friction in the marriage otherwise why would they get divorced.
Re:I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @09:06AM (#49711969)
Not even close.
I don’t necessarily think it’s doing something wildly new and different, but I also don’t see how this style looks anything like what’s in that Wikipedia article.
I disagree. It seems just as easy to plant a seed for people to latch onto. In my experience, people are unlikely to express any kind of opinion that they haven’t seen someone (anyone) else express first.
Re:Teaching an AI My Taste on Thursday September 10, 2026 @09:05AM (#49643098)
Taste in the sense that people use it to describe something that LLMs are missing doesn’t mean “what I like” but rather “what is good” for an arbitrary set of difficult to pin down criteria.
Re:The UN challenges five centuries of cartography on Thursday September 10, 2026 @12:56AM (#49638584)
Calling it Equal Earth was a bad move. The word “equal” has tons of baggage. Why not call it something less incendiary like Actual Earth or something? What ever happened to being pragmatic?

Re:Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:18AM (#49625317)
I don’t understand how people are reading this comment and saying “yeah, but…”

The benefits of a mass surveilled world are absolutely not enormous. Like, what the actual fuck?

You just need to reasonably predict the future 20 years ago.

Given that, throughout history, a handful of volcanic eruptions have triggered periods of global cooling, will global warming become a non-issue if a particularly large volcano happens to erupt in the next few years?

Re:The Vibe Tax on Sunday August 23, 2026 @08:11PM (#49413865)
Don’t get me wrong, I agree. I see Fable and Opus 5 write garbage code and useless tests all the time. And don’t get me started on comments. I’m just trying to understand how vibe coders are to blame for it.
Re:The Vibe Tax on Sunday August 23, 2026 @04:08PM (#49412108)
I tried, but I’m not sure I understand. The vibe tax is caused by the model trying to one-shot everything and doing so requires unnecessary tests? How are vibe coders training the model over months? Do you mean their sessions and preferences are being fed back into the RL?
You think people in their 50’s run the world? That’s adorable. Meanwhile people are living longer than ever, still going strong in their 80’s. You think they just retired or something?
