Looks like somebody at ZH also knows how to use a compass.

Source bias is always an issue.

I think we would all agree that western media doesn't have the best track record when it comes to "proof" either. Same goes for NATO imagery, I recall similar imagery as proof of WMDs in Iraq etc.

The images currently being circulated were actually captured on captured on 21-23 August 2014, a week ago during Russian military exercises near the border. The interesting thing is that the artillery positions are inside Russian territory and from what I can tell are pointing the wrong direction.

Time will tell. A much larger geopolitical game is being played here and Ukraine is just a pawn to be sacrificed.

The map makes no sense. Reddit's feed is infinitely better.
Re:Live map of Russia advancing into Ukraine on Thursday August 28, 2014 @11:52AM (#8237824)
A quick scan on Russian sources shows no confirmation of a large scale invasion taking place. EU rhetoric also quickly changed since this morning and suddenly nobody is using the word "invasion" anymore. Ukraine crying "wolf", again until confirmed.
At every MWC when it launched to the public and pretty much every iteration since then. My company develops solutions for a telco that is one of the key backers of Firefox OS in developing countries.
Doesn't matter. Web-as-App is a flawed concept that everyone has tried and failed. Firefox is expecting a different result?
I've tried Firefox OS and it feels on par with early versions of Android in terms of UI/UX i.e. it is bad, very bad. Plus poor performance, lack of any app ecosystem and operators are sticking it on sub par hardware. At the end of the day, poor user experience. All said and done, Firefox OS is just something developed markets don't want and emerging markets don't need.
Interesting and seemingly well researched article. That said, there are a handful of things are are phandroidy about it, perhaps too much so.

1. Android is fragmented as ever OEM has their own flavour and most devices do not get upgraded to the latest version by the OEMs. This is a problem for consumers and developers.

2. High-end premium marketshare is owned by Apple.

3. Most instanced of malware targeting iOS is targeting jailbroken devices. Android malware doesn't seem to care whether you rooted your device or not.

4. App quality on Andoird still suffers, more so in some categories than others. It feels that developers feel/think that Android users do not expect as much polish as iOS users since they are more used to sub par apps.

My thoughts exactly. Instead of getting with the program they want to stifle the competition while making life difficult for their clients. I just can't sympathise with the taxi drivers.
Re:Google Now failed me on Friday June 06, 2014 @11:00AM (#7858240)
Besides being stupid, the main problem with Google Now and other "predictive" assistants is that they have no understanding of intent/context.

Google Now would often display travel time to locations and other irrelevant information based on my recent searches. Even though the information was irrelevant. It had no idea WHY I searched for a restaurant in Bordeaux, for example. Sigh. Pointless indeed.

Re:Flickr is removing Facebook and Google sign-in on Friday June 06, 2014 @07:17AM (#7857190)
I think the dynamics of photo sharing changed from the "old" days when everyone with an SLR thought they were a pro.

Finally people are taking photos for themselves and sharing the majority of them with the people who can appreciate them (aka friends and family).

Re:Flickr is removing Facebook and Google sign-in on Friday June 06, 2014 @07:15AM (#7857182)
Coincidentally, I cancelled my Yahoo/Flickr accounts earlier this week. Perfect timing.
Re:Why Google Made Its Self-Driving Car So Darn Cute on Wednesday May 28, 2014 @06:18AM (#7809183)
Cute? Personally, I think it is fugly.
I for one thank the news of the leak. Reminded me to finally delete my eBay account. A process that may take up to 7 days.
We love to through around the words "alternative" and " replacement" it is neither until it is as easy to use/deploy as X for the average Joe. You know 90% of people out there who would't be able to out the words 'git', 'deploy' and 'heroku' in the right order as their eyes glaze over in confusion.
Sorry, I assumed it was clients were open sources based on the article. Now that I looked it appears that is not the case. So ... it is safe because John McAfee?
Re:Moves – Updated Privacy Policy on Monday May 05, 2014 @10:01AM (#7698583)
Exported my dada and deleted the account.

I stopped using the app a long time ago. Didn't find much use for the data at the end of the day.

If you didn't log your workout, did it actually happen?

So the client is open source but the server and backend isn't, same as Telegram? What is the point? That and McAfee doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
Re:New MacBook Air Released – $100 Cheaper on Tuesday April 29, 2014 @08:17AM (#7666397)
I think you can call Apple and get a free upgrade to the latest model if you bought yours within 30 days of release of the new ones.
Re:Apple, Be Afraid: China's Xiaomi Going Global on Monday April 28, 2014 @07:32AM (#7659257)
Apple means clicks/ad displays. Like you said, Android OEMs should be the ones concerned more with this, than Apple.

Xaiomi actually makes good devices, design and spec wise. Android + Google Play + MIUI (iOS look) at prices cheaper than Samsung.

The hardware/design of the latest Xaiomi is very reminiscent of OnePlus One, hmmm.

Re:Dropbox acquires Loom (YC W12) on Friday April 18, 2014 @05:46AM (#7608588)
Sure.

I have roughly 600GB stored on Glacier and around 50 GB on S3 so far this year.

I am yet to spend more than $10/month.

Wait, you say, Google Drive is 9.99 for 1T!

True, I say, but on AWS you only pay for what you use. So you will realize real saving once you push past your first 1T in cumulative storage.

Re:Dropbox acquires Loom (YC W12) on Thursday April 17, 2014 @01:32PM (#7604988)
I just save everything to Amazon Glacier that's not the current year. Current year + library files are dumped into S3 ... rinse and repeat.

For photos, I am using Adobe Lightroom and organize files into folders by year/month/day/subject during import. Edited GoPro videos go to YouTube etc and originals/edits straight to Glacier.

This takes a bit of effort to set up but works great great.

Re:Why Facebook should worry about Tencent on Friday April 04, 2014 @11:09AM (#7531844)
Actually, Asian chat providers are some of the most innovative as they are the only ones truly experimenting with messaging platforms.

LINE was the first to make money with stickers (since copied by everyone and their dog).

WeChat is using their platform to sell life/health insurance http://qz.com/184783/cancer-insurance-is-wechats-newest-vira...

Western messaging systems on the other hand are all very vanilla. Now, everyone is stumbling over each other to add "snapchat" disappearing chats while LINE/WeChat are actually monetising.

+++

Users in APAC are also a lot more innovative in how they use these messaging platforms. There are dating/Tinder services built on top of WeChat.

You sir, won the internet for me today :)
There are legitimate reasons to have a manual on/off switch:

1. In case of electrical failure to extend battery charges for 2-way communication.

2. If the device goes nuts and is better off.

3. To be turned off so that it doesn't interfere with a backup transponder.
