News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

It's the situation I immediately thought of. I remember reading back several months ago that OpenAI was stealing from Apple. I suppose apple is returning the favor.

I see claude as a contributor. Was this vibecoded?
I'm more concerned about sunoco getting a data leak and now my bank information is compromised...

I don't even use my debit card for anything, it all goes on a credit card because it's a lot easier to fight a fraudulent charge.

Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Sunday October 04, 2026 @10:05PM (#49959921)
I'm trying to find this myself. Since I upgraded to the latest version of iOS, I have found no way to disable these stupid writing tools. Whenever I try to take a screenshot, the AI tries to give me suggestions on what to do with the photo before I can properly crop it, and speech to text continues to insert grammar into the output after removing the toggle that disables the auto insertion of grammar (it also seems worse now).

My guess is that we need some tailored configuration profile that will run on the device, which seems to be how this project solved it for macOS.

Re:An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows on Saturday October 03, 2026 @07:00AM (#49943123)
I use Orion (because pay for Orion Plus to support them) specifically because it is not a fork of Chromium.

We need more rendering engines out there in the wild, as the situation with chrome's monopoly is already critically dire.

Re:The Case Against Formal Verification, 50 Years Later on Sunday August 16, 2026 @06:38PM (#49324482)
Not just that, I've been seeing a huge effort in the Ada community to leverage LLMs to convert a lot of libraries into formally verified SPARK code. One of the biggest issues I see with vibe coded stuff is that it's difficult to review and difficult to prove that it's doing what you think it's doing, but with a strongly type language like Ada and formal verification with SPARK, LLM output is easy to read and easy to prove.
Re:Ask HN: How do you keep up with HN these days? on Saturday August 15, 2026 @07:48AM (#49309804)
I live out of my RSS reader for everything from YouTube to Reddit, and in this case I leverage this feed for the HN front page:

   https://hnrss.org/frontpage
The front page of HN has always been pretty good at filtering out AI generated articles (and if one makes it it's usually flagged by the time I get to it). Then I just glance through the list of articles that made it to the front page and decide which ones I want to read.
I reported a blatantly sexual adult ad on Facebook the other day, they got back to me and said that their moderators reviewed the ad and that it was appropriate.

Is only 10 people representative of the population of thunderbird users?

Re:Show HN: Analog Watch on Thursday July 09, 2026 @11:52AM (#48847967)
Technology Connections did a really great video on this a few years ago.

Apparently being raised with analog clocks vs digital changes how one intuits the passage of time.

Re:Gun Mistakes in Fiction Writing: Handgun Edition on Friday July 03, 2026 @08:35AM (#48774268)
I was just watching Tom Scott's latest video, he mentioned firing a trebuchet and the guide pointed this out that you don't "fire" a trebuchet since it doesn't involve gunpowder, you launch it.

Tom's commentary later was that he disagreed with that sentiment. "I disagree with those potential comments. Words change their meaning overtime. In modern English, you can fire an arrow, you can fire a torpedo, we were gonna fire that trebuchet"

Re:GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17 on Tuesday June 16, 2026 @08:51PM (#48564370)
Years ago I looked into GrapheneOS, and I ultimately didn't go with it because, at least at the time, they only supported pixel phones (specifically pixel phones that Google actively had security updates for). I realized that if I got that OS, I would be at the mercy of Google supporting the device in order to continue using GrapheneOS.

In the end I just opted out of the android ecosystem altogether and went with a flip phone that I used as a hotspot for an iPod touch (we only used over VPN with locked down DNS and nothing google related).

My privacy lasted about two weeks, because unfortunately Spotify was able to fingerprint that device to Facebook.

I really appreciate it when services open source their software when they shut down. There's so many amazing sites, software, games, or other neat solitons that are gone forever because there's no way to access it or replicate it.
I also tried using the space bar to fire, it took a bit of digging to realize it was the shift key, but space bar felt more natural for me.
Re:GameBoy Workboy on Saturday June 13, 2026 @02:44PM (#48520194)
I know that HN requests that we don't editorialize the titles, but I feel like the article title for this thread better expresses what's happened at a glance than the "goofy exploit" article.
Just do what Kagi does and turn on AI mode only if there's a "?" At the end of the query.
