Ask HN: Softwar Developpement Certificate, what to expect?

I'm an aerospace engineer, been working for 10 years now and not liking it mainly because of the lack of creativity in this field, big industry, old school mentality, too big to fail (like banking) and extremely inefficient.I don't think I have the energy to learn software on my own. I feel I need the structure of academia. I signed up for a certificate in software developpement, hoping that...

Ask HN: Social Justice vs. Individual Liberty

In political philosophy there is a debate over these two core values that are at the basis of the main political ideologies. You can't have one without violating the other, for some promoting social justice is more important and for others promoting individual liberty is more important. I'd like to know if this is something you HNers spend time thinking about when thinking in which direction...

6) make decisions based on the company's interest rather than your own interest.

You'll have those 10 years of experience in your back pocket in case of emergency. Until then, do your thing, take risks, learn and grow.
Re:I just lost my fifth job in six years on Friday August 28, 2015 @11:41AM (#10136042)
Great comments here. My advice would be similar to what others have said. Try working with people. Last year I was tutoring high school kids and it was a great experience. Working with stressed out kids was much less stressful than working with stressed out adults and it put everything into perspective. Any kind of work where you are interacting with people in a non-competitive environment (or compassionate environment) but also using your intellectual skills (Don't work at Taco Bell!). Try contracting rather than permanent work. Contracts have an end and you're not committing in the long term which allows you to take breaks to take care of your health between contracts. Focus your energy in maintaining a healthy lifestyle (exercise, eat healthy, get enough sleep, meditate). Do as much as possible to keep your thoughts out there (talking and writing) rather than letting your throughts eat you alive. You're not alone, good luck!

I wouldn't focus so much on the tech as on the purpose of what you'll be doing.

In the end, follow your gutt feeling and don't look back.

Same way we have records from 10K years ago, by keeping hard copies.

Pull the plug and all e-records become inaccessible.

That's true for our generation, but future generations might lose the hability to do both as we move to a 100% digital era.

Ask: Do you still find any benefits in using handwriting?

Pros: Some say that because we write slower than we type, it allows for deeper thinking as opposed to faster thinking, which could be beneficial. Also, because it's harder to edit one is more careful while writing (deep thinking again). Privacy can be an advantage as well, one can keep handwritten notes private in a physical way.We all know the pros of typing, easy editing/copying/email and...

Re:Ask HN: What do you do when an homeless ask you money? on Thursday August 06, 2015 @09:18AM (#10016162)
If one earns enough to the point that pocket change (coins) has become a burden to carry around and one has the "opportunity" to give it to the homeless, then it's a win-win.
Re:Ask HN: Do you play Chess? on Tuesday August 04, 2015 @01:19PM (#10004800)
"Chess is a game of perfect information" - perfect but almost infinite/impossible to calculate even for the most powerful computers, within a finite timeframe. The number of legal chess positions is 10^40, the number of different possible games, 10^120. As a comparison, the number of atoms in the observable universe is estimated to be between 4×10^79 and 4×10^81.
Dah! No need to read any further.
I often exchange from US$ to CAN$ (and vice-versa) and the cheapest way, by far, is to trade in cash. Credit cards use bank rates and bank rates can't compete with currency exchange shops dealing in cash.

The problem comes when you want to exchange larger sums of money.

Thanks!
It is legal. Easy? Not as easy as it is for residents. You still need to get sponsored and you're not necessarily eligible for all job openings (Some require citizenship or green card). At least in my field that's how it is.
Yeah depending on how complicated it is to switch jobs. As a Canadian I worked on a TN in the US, but it's quite easy to change jobs on a TN, so I didn't have the same problem as the H1Bs.
I work in aerospace engineering and I've noticed that companies make H1Bs work 2, 3 times harder than residents just because it's not as easy for them to switch jobs. They tend to take advantage of that, so you've been warned!
I've had the same problem. I also needed legal assistance in writing contracts between my company and my clients. My clients have more ressources (legal assistance) and therefore I would always get the shorter end of the stick.

There must be companies out there that can bundle all these services for self-employed workers.
