Re:Windows Chrome, why do my fonts look so bad? on Sunday January 19, 2014 @10:00AM (#7084571)
I don't think this is related to the issue this article talks about, but it may be relevant to Windows Chrome users whose fonts suddenly look bad...

I noticed in the past week that sites of mine that had imported a font from Google Web Fonts without explicitly specifying to import bold/italics versions too were looking odd (e.g. weird text-shadow for no reason on what used to appear bold). In past versions of Chrome (or perhaps it's Google Web Fonts that has changed, I'm not sure), I've been able to use [b] and [i] HTML tags around text and my Google fonts have responded accordingly (without my needing to explicitly import bold/italic versions) -- but that's no longer the case. The fix is (obviously) to explicitly import the versions of the fonts you bold/italicize, but it actually took me a little while to figure out that that (and not some weird CSS issue) was the problem.

Hopefully this saves a few other people 15 minutes of poring over their CSS trying in vain to figure out what isn't working!

Re:Get Facebook WiFi for your business on Tuesday January 07, 2014 @08:25PM (#7021126)
This is really cool. Wifi being unavailable "in the wild" is something that continues to be an annoyance; if this actually starts being adopted by businesses, I think it could have a massive impact on who patronizes which establishments.

Ironically, I also view this as potentially helping Google with Chromebook sales... the more prevalent WiFi becomes, the more useful a Chromebook becomes.

Re:Ask HN: How do you focus? on Tuesday December 31, 2013 @10:48PM (#6994034)
I think going somewhere and having a built-in time limit imposes a "better make this trip productive" mindset that's pretty powerful. For example, I go to the super-quiet room in my school's library for a few reasons (some obvious):

1) It's super quiet -- no talking allowed, cell phones need to be off, so fewer distractions available.

2) Being surrounded by other people who are all getting work done => a good kind of peer pressure / vibe to channel.

3) A built-in time limit (library closes at 5pm) causes me to focus on getting things done so that I can feel like my excursion to the library was a productive one.

4) Somewhat counter-intuitively, switching from double-monitor home setup to single-monitor on-the-go laptop means that while I might not be able to do certain things as efficiently as I would otherwise, I am 100% focused on whatever single window is open on my screen at once!

That's a great point, thanks! Should people actually start using it, I'll definitely consider investing some more time in it.

I'm flattered! -- though I prefer to think of it as being in the about.me space. This was just a 48 hour side-thing that I wanted to put out there. And for the record, it doesn't make any use of LinkedIn's API whatsoever!

Totally fair. If you want to see a more full-fleshed ("real") sample, you can check out the page I generated for myself: http://www.emblem.io/alex

Thanks for the feedback; you're absolutely right, and it's partly intentional. The profile that's displayed on the front page isn't actually 100% indicative of what it looks like if you sign up -- more a joke than anything else. The goal of this was to present an alternative to about.me more than anything else (and thus certainly not to cater to recruiters).

Aw, but I LOVE drop-shadow and cursive! :)

I appreciate the feedback, guys; this project was just a 48-hour diversion which I figured had stand-alone merit, but I'll be sure to take your comments to heart vis-a-vis my other work.

Thanks!
