This idea sounds nice, but there's a high maintenance cost to this.

- How will you maintain multiple deployments across multiple regions in the world? Backups, security patches will start to take a toll. - How granular is the right split? Not every country has a cloud provider. Then you need to start thinking about regions and office timings and then it starts to get all blurry.

Just for my own understanding, could you clarify why you think "last write wins" is a recipe for disaster?

Curious to know what other alternatives have you found better.
> At the end of the day, it's all about calories.

No it's not. Calories is just a unit of energy. And there are good energy sources, and bad ones as well. It's not just one single factor that rules everything. Quality and variety of food matters a lot.

That is exactly what this video is about. If you want something to be more in-depth, this video is not going to help you. But that's okay.

Re:A video tour of the Standard Model (2021) on Wednesday January 08, 2025 @01:33AM (#42631605)
As clearly stated in the video, you need to have prerequisite knowledge of quantum physics and special relativity. The quanta video can be understood by someone out of high school. Different audiences. Different goals. Just because something is all charts and animations, doesn't mean that it's bad.
This is normal in Go though.

How much longer this is from the plank time?

You make it sound so simple. What if your kid simply doesn't listen? They are smart, so they know that if they keep nagging, they will eventually get what they want.

It's crashing frequently for me. Are you using Proton experimental or v7? I am using experimental and vulcan and it keeps crashing for me.

> Patch out the phone-home Segment spyware and selfhost a Mattermost,

Just to clarify, by patching out, all you need is to disable a config setting: https://docs.mattermost.com/manage/telemetry.html. It's not like you have to modify the code or anything more intrusive.

Not OP, but I also work in a remote company. Our company uses deel.com. You only need to set up a corporate entity when the number of employees exceed a certain limit IIRC. When that happens, yes it's a bit of a hassle.

> web UI websocket is going to behave badly, requiring frequent refreshes to not miss any messages, or it still doesn't scroll to bottom sometimes on new messages, this has been the case since v.4.x and we're now on v.7;

That shouldn't be the case with 7.0. We recently released a feature called "reliable websockets" that makes a connection reliable across websocket disconnects. If you have any repro steps, please feel free to create an issue and we will take a look.

> what I think is different from Slack is that threaded responses are shown in the main channel as well, and if there are many threads it is the same mess as if there were no threads at all :D

With 7.0, our Collapsed Reply Threads feature is now in GA: https://mattermost.com/blog/collapsed-reply-threads-generall.... Feel free to enable it to get a better threading experience.

Search in SQL databases is a tough beast to get it right. And given that we support MySQL and Postgres both, it gets even harder to support quirks of both of them.

In enterprise editions, the only addition is Elasticsearch. But in our open-source version, we do have support for https://github.com/blevesearch/bleve. Although, it's in beta, we have a lot of customers using it.

I am wondering if you have tried using it and didn't like it?

Reminder that there is a whole page which mentions _exactly_ what items are tracked and how to disable the feature: https://docs.mattermost.com/manage/telemetry.html

Every config setting has an equivalent env var option.

You can either use an env var, or change the setting via system console, or directly change your config.json file - LogSettings.EnableDiagnostics = false.
