Re:Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:34AM (#49893010)
Israel is doing colonial violence to steal land and do ethnic cleansing. Hamas is doing anti-colonial violence to free themselves from people oppressing them.

You could argue that Israel is doing this because Hamas is so bad, but then you look at what Israel is doing in the other part of palestine not controlled by Hamas? Daily pogroms and violent ethnic oppression of all kinds.

The problem is that Israel is based on ethnic supremacy. The way the victims (the palestinians) react is not relevant.

There is a tv show about in-the-know government employees dying by suicide: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormwood_%28miniseries%29
They do it in a more subtle way on HN. They use friendly journalists to push technologies and solutions they have backend access too. Obviously the HN crowd is a very a tough crowd the fool, but it does not mean they are not trying.

Notice how the tech media will decide particular companies as the only ones worth talking about in certain segments. It's not only money behind this, there are other motivations.

Who exactly is influential & organized enough across many western countries to push legislation that no one is asking for? Notice that epstein said he worked for [withheld] in some of his emails.

The typical couple does not want a glass box.
I would pivot H-1B teams to Canadian offices if I were big tech.
US rockets were always made by private providers like SpaceX or Boeing.

I do not understand why Wired exist. Who wants news about technology from a techno-pessimist angle?
You could take these type of orders as "pending" then require a SMS code to access the final payment page. Adding an extra step like this might discourage the attacker if their goal is not attacking you specifically. They will move on to another easier target.
Wall to wall astroturfing on Reddit is killing it's usefulness since the election. We need an alternative that prevents botmasters from having 5000 accounts. One solution is doing like X/twitter and charging $8/month. Another solution would be using Meta's social graph. Is there some other way to prove you are a human?
Re:CIA Now Favors Lab Leak Theory to Explain Covid's Origins on Saturday January 25, 2025 @06:17PM (#42825946)
Only one lab in the world doing GoF experiments on this specific furin cleavage site AND a random natural mutation happens within a few KM of this lab on this specific furin cleavage site. What are the odds of this happening? Very close to zero.

Yes cutting $2T is not realistic. If they manage to do a few percent of the goal it is still going to be good for everyone.

Bloat is a major issue that prevent anglosphere societies from achieving goals that poorer societies do easily. Ex: Spain or France do awesome public transit for 3 or 5 times less than we do.

Yes, the republicans will cut spending. Next election cycle the Democrats will be able raise spending, but now from a more sound basis. The deadwood will be pruned. DOGE is good for both the left and the right.

Also do note that the current Twitter valuation is higher than we he bought it. Cutting 80% of the staff at twitter was the right move. https://www.yahoo.com/tech/elon-musks-startup-xai-now-120118...

Humans are meant to have kids and form families. This is the life meaning that is escaping childless strivers.

> He seems to realize he is an Elon bro but still thinks DOGE is an important national priority and not a problematic oligarchic downsizing of our important federal services and regulatory bodies.

I'm confused by this belief. Anyone who has ever interacted with a big government in the West knows they are a knot of old and confusing regulations that cause every thing to be slow and expensive. A leftist should be happy that the state gets to accomplish more with it's existing budget.

Re:The Surprising New History of Horse Domestication on Thursday December 05, 2024 @08:39AM (#42328128)
I do not understand how this article undermines the Kurgan Hypothesis. The modern horse enters the picture later according to those discoveries, but it is still within the right time frame and geographic location.
Re:Nobody knows why ultra-processed foods are bad for you on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @06:14PM (#42251191)
>The participants were allowed to eat as much as they wanted, but the diets had the same amount of calories total, and the same calorie density. The results are striking; participants eating ultra-processed foods consumed more calories and gained weight while the other group lost weight. [1]

Did they eat the same amount of calories or more calories? People will eat more of tasty food and less of bland food. You could get the inverse result by giving bland ultra-processed food and tasty unprocessed food.

Re:Meta Fined $843M by EU over Marketplace Ads on Thursday November 14, 2024 @01:35PM (#42139513)
Every big retailer has its own house brand. There is nothing special about a big retailer using their sales data to make decisions on house branding.

No they cannot adjust their pricing to whatever they like because Amazon is not a monopoly. People can buy stuff elsewhere. If Amazon pricing is bad, people will leave and it will kill Amazon.

Re:Meta Fined $843M by EU over Marketplace Ads on Thursday November 14, 2024 @11:48AM (#42138070)
How are consumer harmed by Facebook Marketplace appearing in Facebook?
Re:Meta Fined $843M by EU over Marketplace Ads on Thursday November 14, 2024 @11:47AM (#42138060)
But why would Facebook not have the right to show Facebook Marketplace on their own platform? Is Facebook not allowed to add features to their app? Is Facebook Group an unfair competitor to other online forums? Who decide what features are allowed?
A charitable interpretation of what he said is that we need to do real world experiment instead of of relying on the opinion of supposed experts. Real data based on well made experiments trumps the opinion of any particular person.
I believe it is an elaborate psyop to shift the blame of inflation away from the government and toward a boogeyman, the "evil" grocery chains. As you point out the margins are super tight in food retail, it is impossible for it to be the cause of inflation.

From the point of view of the average man however, the grocery store is exactly where he is facing inflation daily! This makes it the ideal scapegoat.

The average man will never ever realize that the monetary mass surged during covid while real world production slowed down. More dollars chasing fewer goods & services equals rising prices. That monetary policy smoothed out the COVID downturn and it was a great success, but it was not a free lunch.

Claude Sonnet was awesome at launch. It became much dumber over the last two weeks. There must be behind the scene throttling going on as it got more popular.
A sane bank CEO would never get taken by such a simple con. The guy must have been suffering of some kind of dementia. It can happen at any age.
Poisonings, people falling out of windows, arsons, it all make sense if you consider that it is a state captured by a mafia clan. John McCain famously said that Russia is ‘A Gas Station Run by a Mafia That Is Masquerading as a Country’

Re:Students invent quieter leaf blower on Thursday May 16, 2024 @10:15AM (#40378763)
The leaf blower is used after using the weed eater (String trimmer) to blow all the little bits back into the grass.
If their claim is true, should they not do it themselves and make a lot of money? It would help their mission greatly to have a few extra billion dollars.
Re:Ask HN: Is it worth paying $6k/month for an SEO agency? on Saturday March 09, 2024 @10:35AM (#39652277)
Getting quality links is usually a long and expensive process. Paying $6k could make sense if they are delivering good results.
