I’ve been running https://pollylingu.al as a single person company for a few years now.

I’m a full stack dev for a large media company, and made https://nftpaint.app/ in my free time as an experiment. I have some ideas for turning it into a social drawing NFT app, but would like to find some people to collaborate with, specifically people who know about promoting NFTs or Solidity development.

The last bit about how none of the sampled rocks was actually a cube reminded about this article (https://www.thestar.com/news/insight/2016/01/16/when-us-air-...) on how when you design for averages you're actually designing for no one. They tried to make a scruple of the "average woman" based on average measurements, but no woman they found actually had the average measurements

They do.
While founding a company and attending graduate school are in fact very different things, the personal virtues (persistence, diligence, originality, etc.) and the daily methods used (presentation skills, conceptualizing in a problem space, fast iterations, etc.) have a lot of overlap.

The design of Hacker News operates on a similar principle. It looks vaguely like an error page. Non-developers look at a think something is wrong, but technical people stick around and self-select into the community.

Re:Working from home may hurt your career
on Wednesday April 19, 2017 @11:08AM (#14148233)
It definitely requires a change in your mental state at home. It goes from "my place of relaxation" to constant anxiety about whether you should be working. Unless you start with the mindset that you will now always be working, you won't be as productive from home. Maybe once you get some experience you can lighten up a bit, and you should always keep some off-time scheduled for the weekend, but as they say, you can't go home again. And good for some people for not wanting to trade that (along with typically a lower salary and opportunity) for having to show up 8~6.
Re:Thousands of deadly U.S. military airstrikes have gone unreported
on Wednesday February 08, 2017 @11:09AM (#13599306)
How difficult would it be to create a map of worldwide military strikes, not just by the US, but all countries? Where is data like that available? What other countries are so transparent as the US in publishing that data? Do Russia and China? Could be an interesting project that serves the public interest globally. Sort of like crime maps, but at world scale.
Re:Ask HN: Does anyone dream of code?
on Wednesday February 08, 2017 @10:55AM (#13599162)
Usually when I'm learning a new programming language or technique, and just at the point where I'm starting to grok it but still having challenges, I'll dream that I'm programming in that language. Usually a day or two after that, I'll feel like I've finally acquired that skill. I remember this very clearly happening when I was about 22 and was playing around with Javascript and AJAX calls. It happened a couple other times after that, I think when learning Objective-C for iOS too, and maybe once again when learning how NSLayoutConstraints work.

Thanks, it's been around in various forms for a few years, recently moved from "Salaam Arabic" https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/learn-arabic-salaam/id646808... to a the unified Polly Lingual. It's been a lifestyle company and sort of priced that way. The goal has always been to not be annoying, but maybe that's been bad for business.
Re:Spaced repetition

Agreed. It doesn't matter how efficient the algorithm is if people get bored and stop using it. At Polly Lingual (https://pollylingu.al) we tried to tune our space-repitition flashcards for this. We aimed for small lessons that move more quickly, with optional follow up for difficult items. For casual learners this doesn't deter them, and for advanced students, they can still go back and see where they need improvement or just simply do the lessons again.

There are lots of privacy issues involved, but it'd be cool if Siri/Alexa/Cortana/etc count respond correctly to something like "Remind I need to ask my brother about whatever the next time I see him", sort of a social-fencing rather than a geo-fencing.

Re:Ask HN: What was your “why didn't I start doing this sooner” moment?
on Friday July 29, 2016 @02:15PM (#12188733)
Totally agree. I started "programming" at an early age which just made me feel like I didn't need to pay attention when I took actual CS classes. The results were that I missed out on learning a lot of lessons the easy way (in school) and had to learn them the hard way.

I was looking for someone to write this answer. I admittedly don't write tests and have been seriously questioning this lately. Maybe it's a desire for confirmation bias, but I'm glad someone said this.

I had something similar thing happen several years ago when I was a grad student. Me and a couple friends were putting together some Facebook apps (when they were a new thing), and one guy didn't escape user input correctly. Some teenager from an Eastern European country (I can't remember which anymore) ran a script to figure out that we were vulnerable to SQL injections. He was a nice enough guy and didn't want anything besides some experience "hacking". We patched up the code and told him thank you.
I understand you're running a business which makes it that much more scary. If he's not asking for ransom, you might ask him how he'd fix it. I know it might seem like blackmail, but you might even offer him a "consulting fee". He's probably just someone looking to try new things out and not malevolent.

I've been running Pangaea Learning (https://www.pangaealearning.com) solo for about 6 years now. I recently found a guy who helps me manage the community around Polly Lingual (https://pollylingu.al), but it's mainly me and a small cadre of freelancers. All of our projects have been bootstrapped. Since you're curious about profitability, I'll be honest and say that the golden years of the App Store are probably behind us (or at least me) and I'm starting to seriously entertain other work possibilities.
