There is a company called Dragon Innovation who do just this: http://www.wired.com/design/2012/06/dragon-innovations-manuf...

There is also an interesting podcast on the process: http://theamphour.com/the-amp-hour-113-sudden-sinoamerican-s...

Re:Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2012) on Monday October 01, 2012 @07:21PM (#4599863)
SEEKING WORK - Remote

I’m an Australian developer (currently abroad) seeking remote freelance work.

I’m an engineer who gets stuff done. I work at all levels of the technology stack from Web Apps to Embedded Systems and Electronics.

Some of the technologies I’ve been working with lately:

- Ruby on Rails, Heroku, Bootstrap, Jekyll

- iOS app development

- Embedded systems, C, Raspberry Pi (currently working on a series of articles on internet enabled sensors - ‘internet of things’ if you like)

Ask NH: Personal Vs. Company Blogs

I have a small company that I use for working on my side projects. I want to start blogging more often about my experiences trying to launch a startup but I am not sure if I should blog on my company site or start a new personal blog.Any advice would be appreciated.

Re:Ask Old-School HN: What was it like pre internet? on Tuesday August 21, 2012 @11:04PM (#4415853)
Instead of the internet, I lurked around the local library for game magazines with source code listings in the back.

I love this. I did the exact same thing at my local library looking for books on BASIC (now I lurk on HN instead of at the library). I always had trouble getting the code listings to work because they were usually written for a slightly different version of BASIC than what I had. Without the internet there wasn't really any way for me to figure out what the problem was so there was plenty of trial and error.

One of my best memories was finally buying Tricks of the Game Programming Gurus by Andre LaMothe. I remember reading almost the whole book the first day I got it and trying out all the great code examples. This was the first time I really saw how real games were made. It basically runs though making a game like Wolfenstein 3D only two years after it was released. I think it would be a struggle to write a book about how to make a triple A title from 2010.

Near the end of high school I stopped coding but when I got back into it several years later, I was amazed at the resources and tools freely available on the internet.

Ask HN: If making money was not a factor, what startup would you work on?

I'm currently thinking about startup ideas but they have to involve making money (as I still need to pay the bills). However, I keep thinking of ideas that are not really financially viable for me (like alternative energy transport, advanced robots etc).So my question is, if you had Elon Musk type money, what would you work on?

Re:Ask HN: Notable Hacker News Users on Thursday July 26, 2012 @10:24PM (#4299705)
Haha, thanks :) I was waiting for someone to mention pg. I'm a big fan of both his writing style and advice. Any other suggestions?

Ask HN: Notable Hacker News Users

I spend a lot of time reading Hacker News each day trying to learn as much as I can about startups. However, one of the problems that I have is I find it hard to know what advice to listen too. There are so many opinions and comments and it can be very difficult to know if the author actually knows what they are talking about. So my question is, who are the best people to listen to on Hacker...

No, you need to check either log into your iTunes Connect account and manually check the reviews for each country.

Review Mailer does all the leg work for you and also translates the reviews into English (more languages will be added if there is demand).

Nice to see someone else enjoying my app!
Re:How to make your github static page a blog on Monday April 02, 2012 @06:25AM (#3787333)
Looks good. I haven't heard of Speechhub but I look forward to your tutorial.

I recently added a blog to my static GitHub page using Jekyll (http://atomyard.com/blog/Blogging-with-Jekyll/). I found Jekyll to be very easy to use (and it's built right into GitHub) so I'd be interested to see how Speechhub compares.

I released my first solo app to help me capture and remind myself of my ideas. It’s called “Noted! and is available for iPhone - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/noted!/id504164257?ls=1&m...

You can read about my success (or lack thereof!) here - http://atomyard.com/blog/How-not-to-market-an-iPhone-app/

Re:Why You Don't Need A Programmer on Friday March 30, 2012 @12:25AM (#3774510)
That’s a fair point. However, there could also be front loading in the business role. Sounding out the market, figuring out who your customers are and what they want - the sort of stuff that should be done before writing any code. Isn't that still a significant amount of work?
Re:Why You Don't Need A Programmer on Thursday March 29, 2012 @09:14PM (#3774032)
I used to be of the opinion that the technical people did all the hard work and hence they should get the majority of the equity. However, once I tried to do everything myself I realised that the technical side was only one piece of the puzzle.

Business, design and marketing may not be as intellectual as programming but they are no less hard and often more important.

I really think that if two people are involved, the equity split should be 50/50 regardless of the skill set each one brings. If the equity is unbalanced, the level of effort each founder brings will be too.

This is an app I made to help me remember my ideas: http://atomyard.com/

I made it to scratch my own itch but I hope other people find it useful too.
