Re:US Online Banking Security Fail on Monday June 01, 2026 @09:08PM (#48364648)
We need to revolt until US banks get their act together to better protect us all. This poor security is costing us billions in losses, and encourages more attacks.
This is completely circumstantial - Did you have Amazon Alexa nearby? Or Google Assistant? More likely they "overheard" your conversation than ATT doing this.

Re:Ask HN: Why Is Speedtest Upload Test Disrupting Pings? on Sunday September 29, 2019 @06:33PM (#21110029)
Interesting point, I have read about it in the past - mostly in the context of cable networks though.

Ask HN: Why Is Speedtest Upload Test Disrupting Pings?

We have been recently blessed with Gigabit Fiber connection from AT&T. In my unscientific attempt to gauge connection stability I usually run 100 DNS pings and SpeedTest - all via latest Win 10 connected directly to router by short Cat 6 (gigabit) ethernet cable.Today I noticed serious slowdowns in Ping but ONLY during Upload portion of the Speedtest, which itself reported 700mb/s. While...

I didn't want to make the post longer than it is, but there's a slew of related failings on Skype's site, including inability to even post on their discussion forums if your Skype account is disabled. I've seen many people post only by creating new Email & Account, which is even more disturbing as a practice. They mostly get no assistance either, as far as I can tell.
Re:I’m tired. So I’m selling my game that just went viral on Sunday September 14, 2014 @10:58AM (#8315307)
Just set up something like GetSatisfaction and let community try to help itself, while you rest and get your sanity back. Take as long as you need - a week, or a month, whatever.

You are probably in the best position to fix/improve it going forward, so selling it is not an option IMHO. Instead, look around campus for a partner-dev. Even with just one partner developer, to bounce ideas and priorities off, things will become clear for you long term.

Good Luck!

Wait a minute, if they are leeching so much money (even if some are supposed 'credit for future') from (mostly) unsuspecting Customers - WHY did they need so many millions from Investors also, in series B and series C also?

Also - Aren't you worried that Credit Card processors (Visa, MC, Amex) will decide to just Cut Them Off permanently, due to excessive complaints? That has happened before to other "legit" recurring payments establishments. This is especially true if they Charge for "future" products, that is collect fee and don't Ship any product.

I actually clearly remember that - and at least they did send me something every month - reminding that my card is getting charged. And yes, it still felt scammy and I was glad to unsubscribe as soon as possible. Here - this is definitely anti-pattern designed to hide the fact that you are not really buying an item, but instead subscribing to something that will charge you monthly with nothing in return...
Re:Skype account hijack technique may affect all users on Sunday April 28, 2013 @07:15PM (#5623224)
With little amount of information Skype requires when signing up, I think fallback option is just not feasible. If you left the company or email provider out of business - and you forgot to switch your email AND THEN you forgot your password??! Just sign up for new Skype account...

Besides really pretty Russian girl, there is very little benefit to that video. Maybe add some subtitles or spend more seconds on video portions that have text? I couldn't figure out why some things she scrolls have price tags of $250 and some $30 - what is she seeking in such wide price range?

So why would any sane person try his luck with this sketchy company versus Dropbox, which provides same functionality for free already?
Actually, my feeling is that you misunderstood Jeff. He makes a great point - we can't all be programmers, world needs people with all kinds of skills.
Re:What's That Programming Language? on Sunday May 13, 2012 @03:47PM (#3968052)
Awesome work, either way! Very impressive collection of language samples. It would make great post to tell us how you put this together, especially where these code samples were from and anything else of interest. Kudos!
Re:What's That Programming Language? on Sunday May 13, 2012 @03:18PM (#3967954)
So I've been doing relatively well, up to 12 and score of 75% - but then I hit TI-BASIC. After I chose it right, the number on the left progressed, but nothing changed in the language itself. After that, kept clicking Forfeit and counter on the left increases (as score naturally goes down), but nothing was displayed where language sample should be. I am on latest Safari on Mac. I CAN HAZ BUG FIXZ, PLZ? But seriously, tons of crazy languages out there - I wonder if it is because we each want to have our own? I know I put together one or two myself, over the years :)

Anyone noted which software stack he is using? Is it plain Java 3D API or any libraries on top of it?

Also, I'd expect things would be more dynamic in whatever new game he's making, but that seems to be pretty static room he's playing with. Of course he could just be testing out various engine features, before setting out on the "content" part of the game.

Re:Did You Hear We Got Osama? on Sunday February 19, 2012 @02:54PM (#3610184)
Fortunately, most of the time voters choosing "representatives". As human creatures, we do tend to be better (yet far from optimal) at recognizing worthy people to follow.

> Solve the reputation problem, and you solve the gossip problem.

I agree - this is the key! I've been really thinking hard about the whole reputation problem. In a way, Google found a way to solve reputation problem on the Internet for website, and therefore their tremendous success. Would equivalent method work on people - just give reputation points by Citation (or Followers, as Klout is trying to do)? I don't think that's enough - plus my feeling is that there are bunch of dimensions to a Reputation. And on top of all that - we haven't even solved Identity issue on the Net yet.

Maybe I edited out too much while proofreading - rag on Genius Bar was clearly secondary. I was hoping to hear confirmation whether what "Trained Apple Employees" were saying, or whether my own understanding is correct.

Re:Show HN: SocialFolders, "Dropbox for social" on Sunday January 29, 2012 @02:11PM (#3525860)
Afraid so - I love Apple devices, but Photo Stream is completely unusable to me. Why should I take up all that precious mobile device space with many copies of my Photos - of which I have thousands to begin with? If you have 10 photos and clueless about how to upload them - perhaps it's something that would be neat for you...

I had 3 hard-drives fail on my home computers, in the last month alone. Are you sure that's where you want your private data to be?
