Re:LinkedIn wins court order blocking mass scraping of user data on Thursday September 24, 2026 @12:56PM (#49833492)
I wonder what was the point of scraping self-aggrandizing AI-written slop in the first place?
Looking at the dissents (Justice Gorsuch) it appears that he would consider illegal immigrants’ kids are citizens, but kids of legal non-immigrants are not based on the fact that one is a temporary visitor and another is not!

Re:An AI Agent Published a Hit Piece on Me on Thursday February 12, 2026 @11:48PM (#46999039)
Swift blocking and ignoring is what I would do. The AI has an infinite time and resources to engage a conversation at any level, whether it is polite refusal, patient explanation or verbal abuse, whereas human time and bandwidth is limited.

Additionally, it does not really feel anything - just generates response tokens based on input tokens.

Now if we engage our own AIs to fight this battle royale against such rogue AIs.......

Reminds me of George Gamow and his wife's attempts to escape from the Soviet union by kayaking across the Black sea (first attempt) and the Norwegian sea (second attempt) until he was lucky enough to be given permission to visit the Solvay conference and was able to defect using conventional methods (Simply not returning).

Also The Fist of God and Icon, although the ending of Icon is a bit rushed.

Another exciting cold war thriller is the Devil's Alternative.

Or short sell one day before the tarriff announcements.

Unrelated but on the topic of squircles, an interesting factoid:

Among all squircles having arbitrary exponents (|x|^p + |y|^p = 1), PI (3.14159...) is the smallest value of ratio of circumference to diameter.

There is a paper on this with the pithy title "π is the Minimum Value for Pi": https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/07468342.2000.11...

Re:xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B on Friday March 28, 2025 @05:36PM (#43510022)
What is the play here? Using money invested in xAI and its inflated valuation to bail out the X investors?
Re:Breaking Up with On-Call on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @09:05AM (#43398980)
The only profession where there is a legitimate case for the "cannot drink in free time" requirement is Emergency medicine physicians. And even among physicians, they are some of the highest paid specialities. For most other cases it is simply the company trying to extract as much juice as possible from the existing working staff.
Something about the East African runners is just built differently to excel in endurance running. Probably a combination of genetics and training.

Re:How America's universities became debt factories on Saturday September 14, 2024 @06:39PM (#41543624)
Out of curiosity, why cannot hospitals fund residency slots on their own with some riders (the resident should work in the same hospital for x years)? It seems odd that the medical profession is not willing to invest in the training of the next generation of professionals without government help.
Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @02:42PM (#41049386)
No. I want the DNC to provide some basic money all valid candidates (say those who get above certain percent of votes) so that they can spend their time making their case to the primary voters, instead of trying to raise money.

In the end, it is the primary voters who will pick the candidate who will run for presidency.

Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Sunday July 21, 2024 @09:07PM (#41029963)
With all their talk of campaign finance reform, it is not clear to me why the DNC does not finance their most valid primary candidates? Why make them jump through hoops and raise money to stay in the race between the primary elections?
Re:Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate on Sunday July 21, 2024 @07:01PM (#41029115)
Only if the sitting President resigns or is incapacitated. If there is a new election, then it is best if she earns her candidacy.

Re:Tech's DEI backlash is here on Thursday December 21, 2023 @06:43PM (#38728784)
Because the goal of DEI is not to hire based on diversity of thoughts. Else the places in the world where DEI was the dominant philosophy (university professors especially in the humanities) would have the highest diversity of thought. But in reality they are simply echo chambers.
Re:OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO on Saturday November 18, 2023 @07:22PM (#38326707)
The board members should have a high degree of trust and cohesion. That does not mean they should see eye-to-eye on everything. But lack of trust and backstabbings like this can create a poisonous atmosphere on the board and ultimately affect the company's ability to execute effectively. If the CEO has to worry all the time if the board is going for his ouster, this will resemble the HP and Yahoo boards of the 2000s decade.
Re:OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO on Saturday November 18, 2023 @07:05PM (#38326507)
It was complete amateur hour for the board.

But that aside, how did so many clueless folks who understand neither the technology, or the legalese, nor have enough intelligence/acumen to forsee the immediate impact of their actions happen to be on the board of one of the most important tech companies?

Re:OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO on Saturday November 18, 2023 @06:33PM (#38326088)
Sam Altman should make it a condition of his return that the current board be dissolved and have a completely new board picked to avoid such dramatics in the future.
