About Us:
Copia Automation is rebuilding a 50 year old, $50 billion plus industrial market from the ground up by rethinking the command and control layer and developer tools that powers process automation in almost every industrial vertical. Backed by some of the world’s most respected investors, we’re starting by creating a complete developer toolchain for industrial automation that will change how factories are built.
Why industrial automation?
Today, manufacturing is powered by an ecosystem of computerized systems and robotics known as industrial automation. The ecosystem is programmed with a unique graphical language that can’t utilize tools such as GitLab or GitHub. Controls engineers are left to work with physical storage devices, incompatible tools, and/or expensive half-baked solutions. In an industry where minutes can represent tens of thousands of dollars, full featured development tools are urgently needed.
You’ll be part of a team that enables engineers to realize their code through a collaborative and well-designed workflow and we’re looking for passionate individuals that will transform how everything is manufactured.
What You’ll be Building:
You’ll be building a devops platform that enables controls engineers to remotely manage, test and deploy code in industrial environments (think GitLab for automation).
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience as a software engineer
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, HCI, Design, or equivalent practical experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in designing and implementing user interfaces (UIs)
- Experience with React, TypeScript, Golang
- Experience/Interest in manufacturing and hardware innovation
- Experience in industrial automation and Programmable Logic Controllers
Apply by emailing your resume to [email protected]. Even if you're not looking now, we would love to chat!
Some of the effects I have noticed:
- Less anxiety throughout the day.
- Fewer "highs" and "lows" throughout the day. My energy level is pretty constant.
- Easier to wake up. I rarely snooze my alarm more than once.
- Easier to focus. My level of focus (over time) is more consistent.
- Better hydration. This means less headaches, etc.
- More energy. I generally have the energy I need to do what I want basically up until I go to sleep.
- I can burn sleep. It's very easy for me now to go 2-3 days with very limited sleep, and then sleep 12 hours to recover.
- Coffee "works." The one or two times I needed coffee, it actually worked to keep me awake and energized.
The reason for this is pretty obvious. Coffee stresses your adrenals and sends your body an "awake" signal. Caffeine's half life is 6 hours, which means even if you have it "before noon" you'll still have a substantial amount in your system while you sleep. This impacts sleep quality, which means you are accumulating micro amounts of sleep debt every night which you never pay off. Eventually, you struggle to get up in the mornings until you have had some coffee in your system. The "I can't function without coffee" effect. This is a pretty much ubiquitous 21st century experience, as far as I can tell.Furthermore, coffee impacts your body's natural processes that it uses to wake up. Your body produces cortisol in order to wake up in the morning, which is a "stress" hormone, which is also induced by drinking coffee (which overall impacts the endocrine system). Hacking this system to overproduce hormones everyday isn't great for when your body actually needs this system to wake you up.
For people considering quitting coffee I have the following advice:
- You will get a headache 24-36 hours after you quit. Take ibuprofen. (By the way, this should give you a hint to how long coffee actually meaningfully stays in your system.)
- You will feel weird for probably 2 weeks.
- You will have coffee cravings. (I found these hit when I was tired. I felt like I needed to drink coffee to fix my tiredness. I tried to replace this impulse with drinking water or herbal tea a lot of tiredness is caused by dehydration.)
- You will be tired sometimes. You'll just have to deal with that, but it's really not that bad of a sensation, and the solution: sleep :)
People often think cutting coffee out is "impossible" but many people also haven't gone a day or two without drinking coffee since they were 18, so, I would say it's worth a try at least.Specifically, we store energy in adipose tissue in the form of body fat after a meal (think of it like storing data on disk) and then when we are low on energy we burn that fat (load that data “in-memory”). However, a lot regulates when we burn fat. Blood sugar and insulin levels signal to the body not to burn fat and those come directly from carbohydrates. Additionally, carbohydrates are the initial energy source that is turned to fat. So with no carbs all your body knows how to do is burn fat for energy, and no additional intake of carbs means that there is no excess energy to store as fat to begin with. So, actually, even with a 5000 calorie diet you might see some weight loss... because your body has literally nothing (no carbs) to store as fat.
However, keto and low carb diets do have the benefit of the fact that they are entirely sustainable (unless you’re really addicted to bread) so I agree in that way they are behavioral :P
Study after study and clinical experience shows that low calorie diets are really hard for humans “in the wild” to maintain in practice. People who are on them constantly complain of hunger (in the mid-20th century these were actually called “semi-starvation” diets), and go back to their previous weight as soon as they are done. That’s why a lot of modern dieting has oriented around low carb / high fat because it means that you get enough calories, but the composition of your macronutrients causes you to lose weight. You don’t have to go as low as Keto to get these effects (that’s 5-10% carbs) and certainly don’t need to entirely cut out fruit, etc. And the results have been observed clinically for 100+ years.
This, however, hasn’t prevented academic nutritionist after academic nutritionist from pushing these narratives without any clinical experience. Can you imagine being at least a little hungry for 20 years... the equivalent time span in humans to get the effect reserved here in rats? That’s insane. And, more bluntly, probably not doable.
If you’re skeptical of this try dropping your caloric intake by 30% for two weeks and tell me how you feel :)

It seems like perhaps a more pragmatic example of this syntax is the "with" syntax in python, which provides the same benefit with more flexibility.

Furthermore, and somewhat amusingly, "a summer intern conducted this work." Thus, it was mostly a summer project, researching demographics about people who started to comment and then stopped.
They put forth 7 major hypothesis:
1) posts will be censored more than comments 2) men will self-censor more than women 3) users with more opposite-sex friends will self-censor more 4) younger users will self-censor less 5) users with older friends will censor more 6) users who more frequently used audience selection tools self-censor less 7) users with more diverse friends will self-censor more
All of these are interesting questions based in a large amount of literature that they could uniquely address and answer with the data that they had. Recording whether or not users enter and then remove data is honestly relatively unimportant. Yes, websites taking user data without asking is an invasion of privacy, but I think this sort of article represents a type of knee jerk alarmism and exaggeration that can be incredibly hurtful to efforts to use data Facebook has available to answer interesting questions about human interaction. It also, furthermore, represents a purposeful misreading of the article, which is journalistically questionable.
