Your scroll-to-death user interface made me close the window before the end of the second page.

Did you ask an LLM to recommend the most user-friendly UI to you?

Show HN: Text Spinner API

https://www.textspinnerapi.com/

It's your email and web content cocktail shaker – you decide what goes in, and it keeps your text fresh without losing the flavor. Layer content pieces for extra zing. No subscriptions; pay for what you use, when you need it. The API is a breeze to use.I made this in protest to the "everything AI" highway that everyone is now running on. AI APIs are still way too slow to facilitate real-time...

Re:Now live for all: Substack Notes on Tuesday April 11, 2023 @02:24PM (#35529121)
I use a unique email address for each substack author that I subscribe to. That is incompatible with Notes.
Re:Now live for all: Substack Notes on Tuesday April 11, 2023 @02:21PM (#35529065)
If you subscribe to someone’s Notes you also subscribe to their email articles. No thank you, especially if aal their articles are behind a paywall. Not sure why Musk is so freaked out over Notes. Probably just general paranoia.
The FDIC $250,000 insurance is there to protect the depositors.

The amount is not a secret.

If you keep more than that in cash in a bank account, you take a known risk and must definitely not be bailed out.

You did not need to keep that large amount in cash. You could have bought short-term US treasury bills with every cent above $250k, and your deposits would have been perfectly safe. All of it.

Exactly.
Re:Facebook Announces Meta Verified on Sunday February 19, 2023 @12:45PM (#34859889)
Why would that merit a recurring charge? In other words, what ongoing expense is incurred by the company to display a particular icon next to your name?
Re:Facebook Announces Meta Verified on Sunday February 19, 2023 @12:40PM (#34859821)
What about the verified status can change, that merits a recurring charge versus a once-off charge? Can you suddenly morph into “not you”?
Any alien race with technology to reach Sol will also have superior technology to defend themselves. Only start worrying when the “balloon” shot down the F-18s and F35s that were scrambled to shoot it down.
Re:ChatGPT has flaws and is underwhelming on Friday January 27, 2023 @09:27AM (#34546395)
The biggest weakness of ChatGPT is that you do not know the source of the information that it presents to you.

With Google, you can apply human assessment and judgment on the veracity of the information based upon your knowledge of the reliability of the source of the information. With ChatGPT that is not possible.

Re:Crypto Firm FTX’s Ownership of a U.S. Bank Raises Questions on Thursday November 24, 2022 @01:54PM (#33734962)
From the article:

“The chairman of FBH is Jean Chalopin, who, along with being a co-creator of cartoon cop Inspector Gadget in the 1980s, is the chairman of Deltec Bank, which, like FTX, is based in the Bahamas. Deltec’s best-known client is Tether, a crypto company with $65 billion in assets offering a stablecoin that is pegged to the dollar.”

That tells you everything you need to know.

Re:Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted and demonetized on Friday November 18, 2022 @06:00PM (#33663970)
This is the correct take. Without the staff and institutional knowledge of a 16 year old service, no amount of hand waving will keep the service healthy. It’s a stunning display of what not to do.
Their website still has a yellow notice at the top:

> “We have limited platform activity, including pausing client withdrawals as allowed under our Terms. We request that clients not deposit to BlockFi Wallet or Interest Accounts at this time.”

Re:BBC: Twitter users jump to Mastodon – but what is it? on Sunday November 06, 2022 @02:58PM (#33496410)
The months you’re referring to was spent trying to get out of the deal. It was not spent preparing for it to close.
Re:BBC: Twitter users jump to Mastodon – but what is it? on Sunday November 06, 2022 @02:57PM (#33496399)
Kara Swisher said some advertisers had told her, after a meeting with Musk last week in NY, that either he came to the meeting totally unprepared or he actually had no plan. He could not articulate a sensible plan to them.
Re:BBC: Twitter users jump to Mastodon – but what is it? on Sunday November 06, 2022 @02:42PM (#33496256)
Having too many servers (many thousands) could be a big drawback for onboarding. Choice paralysis, and difficulty / time consumption of picking a suitable server to join.
Re:BBC: Twitter users jump to Mastodon – but what is it? on Sunday November 06, 2022 @02:27PM (#33496119)
The Mastodon software is not horizontally scalable. So, each instance is forced to be relatively small. One instance will not be able to handle millions of users.
Re:Tech bubbles are bursting all over the place on Friday May 13, 2022 @02:29PM (#31371002)
If average Jane, who is not a raving Tesla fan, wants to spend circa $140K on an EV, and she has to choose between the Mercedes EQS 580 and the Tesla Model X, which one would you say is the no-brainer (better value for money)?

https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/class/eqs/sedan https://www.tesla.com/modelx

That is the future of Tesla. Increasing competition by better products offered by manufacturers with far more experience in manufacturing vehicles, and far superior dealership, service, and parts networks.

Re:Tether starting to lose its peg too, after Terra did on Thursday May 12, 2022 @07:51AM (#31352602)
> The entire point of Tether is that you can absolutely trust them with $100K, $1M, $10M, or whatever. It's backed, it's robust, it's tethered, and they guarantee payout.

No, they don't. This is what Tether says in its ToS at https://tether.to/en/legal :

"Tether reserves the right to delay the redemption or withdrawal of Tether Tokens if such delay is necessitated by the illiquidity or unavailability or loss of any Reserves held by Tether to back the Tether Tokens, and Tether reserves the right to redeem Tether Tokens by in-kind redemptions of securities and other assets held in the Reserves."

So, instead of redeeming your $1M in USD fiat, they can give you an equivalent amount of Dogecoin or Chinese commercial paper.

Furthermore, they say: "In order to cause Tether Tokens to be issued or redeemed directly by Tether, you must be a verified customer of Tether." You are not a "verified customer" of Tether if you exchanged USD for USDT at Coinbase or Binance.

It's only unusual if you make the mistake by thinking about it in terms of US $320 million hard fiat currency.

That's probably NOT what's going to happen.

It's most likely going to be 320 million USDT (Tether) or an equivalent amount of ETH (which was most probably purchased with Tether).

From a technical perspective you are correct.

However, in the midst of a mania, unfortunately nobody is going to listen to a group of engineers telling them about the dangers of blockchain.

The only thing that will, and can, stop the madness is politicians getting off their backsides and implementing related laws and regulations.

If you want to talk to anyone, and have any potential effect, talk to the people in government.

You could own a very expensive URL that goes to 404 - Not Found.

There is no purpose to owning an NFT. It's a scam.
No. Copyright of the work is not generally transferred to the buyer of the NFT. You're buying a cryptographic pointer (URL) to the work, not the work itself.
