Something is missing from this reaction: AI. MS is buying a privileged access to billions lines of code with their history and corrections. In 5-10Y times most code will be produced by AI and the simplest way to train a AI system is to to have access to data. That's what they bought, data. Unfortunately this is another step towards more concentration in IT...

Ask HN: Have you ever heard about A.Bechtolsheim-style investors in Europe?

As the story goes Andy Bechtolsheim gave Brin and Page a $100.000 check after their first meeting in 1998. There was no contract, no discussion about the valuation of the company and Google was not yet created. This is a dream come true for startup creators. Does it still happen ? Have you ever heard about similar stories in Europe ?

Ask HN: European startups, how did you get seed funded?

What is the single advice you would give to a first-time...

(IANAL) In Europe, software is not patentable unless there is a kind of physical/technical effect that goes beyond the normal interaction between the program and the computer.

The usual example is the software to control a anti-lock braking system: as there is a technical effect, it is patentable...

Interesting ... I am sometimes at my desk and working on the design of my app for quite a long time without using the computer...

HiveDesk would consider I am not working if I am 5 minutes idle, right? have you considered an additional periodic webcam screenshot ?

Re:Startup in Europe? on Wednesday July 07, 2010 @09:05AM (#1494032)
For western Europe I would also suggest Luxembourg. Living there is also quite expensive ( but you may live in one of the neighbouring countries)... European HQ of Ebay,Skype,Paypal,Amazon,ITunes are all located in Luxembourg for IP, tax, regulatory (e-commerce) reasons. It's also easier to find motivated multilingual people.
