Re:X Blocks Jailed Istanbul Mayor Imamoglu's Account on Thursday May 08, 2025 @03:35AM (#43923971)
Social media platform X blocked the account of jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a rival to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan whose detention sparked nationwide protests.
No, a similarity between SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses was expected but not this. Flu is not caused by a coronavirus. From the paper:

> This finding is in contrast to multiple published studies in which pre-existing T-cell immunity is suggested to arise from shared epitopes between SARS-CoV-2 and other common cold-causing coronaviruses. However, our findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 reactive T-cells are likely to be present in many individuals because of prior exposure to flu and CMV viruses.

How is this an excuse to spell "grisly" as "grizzly"?
Re:Gitlab default branch name changes to main on Sunday March 14, 2021 @09:33AM (#26455258)
I'm not sure about the accuracy of this quote. In git world branch names have nothing to do with repositories. If anything, the "source of truth" repository is generally called "origin".

It must not be difficult to reach ~2K karma using a GPT-3 comment bot in a few days.

Amazon has another offering called Lightsail [1] with simpler pricing. It might work better for side projects.

[1] https://aws.amazon.com/lightsail/

That happens all the time. What's weird is that they look at me like I'm trying to rip them off.

I have already told you I am not going to charge you. I am just stating my rate if you were to pay for it.

It just needs to look like a bug, not a feature.

Re:Please do not put IP addresses into DNS MX records on Sunday February 21, 2021 @09:14PM (#26219969)
Fair point. I just tested using tcpdump and the IP address in the response doesn't in fact end with a dot.
Re:Please do not put IP addresses into DNS MX records on Sunday February 21, 2021 @09:13PM (#26219959)
That doesn't sound right. A "tcpdump -n -s0 -x -X port 53" shows that the server simply returns "outlook-com.olc.protection", not a FQDN, for "dig mx outlook.com".
Re:Please do not put IP addresses into DNS MX records on Sunday February 21, 2021 @07:17PM (#26218807)
This is a solved problem and not very complicated. For starters the last DNS label of a hostname cannot be all numbers: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1123#page-13
Wasn't that CORBA?
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Thursday February 18, 2021 @06:30PM (#26187317)
Agreed, but we don't have to have sympathy for a company to be fair to them. This is their business model and they have every right not to change it.
Are they also used to transmit power from one gear to another?
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @11:03PM (#26175601)
Yes, and the same holds for self driving cars. I fail to see the difference.
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @11:03PM (#26175598)
True, but you have to opt-out from Facebook too if an end user shares the link. Their argument only works if the news outlet shares the link.
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @10:20PM (#26175192)
The law is not bizarre in essence (there are details that are bizarre though): You are free to ask money for your content. On the other hand, Facebook is free to not buy your it.
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @10:02PM (#26175009)
Blackmail is an exaggeration. The government is asking them to pay for news articles (that have been voluntarily shared) and what Facebook simply says is "we liked the articles when they were free, but thanks, we don't want to buy them".
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @09:56PM (#26174944)
Who would you blame if the algorithm could be printed on paper?
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @09:55PM (#26174931)
Who do you charge when the brakes don't work on your car? When the airbags don't activate? When your rain sensor doesn't work?

Believe it or not, your car is not that primitive when compared to a self-driving one in terms of the number of things it does autonomously.

We can't even explain all physical phenomena, so good luck with banning anything that depends on the gravity of earth to function, because we don't know what gravity is.
Re:Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @08:46PM (#26174458)
I don't think I follow. The point is a hardware wallet is not as convenient as an exchange as you can always recover your account if you forget your password. It's not as secure though, as the private keys are hold by someone else.
Re:Changes to sharing and viewing news on Facebook in Australia on Wednesday February 17, 2021 @08:30PM (#26174336)
> Google Search is inextricably intertwined with news and publishers do not voluntarily provide their content. On the other hand, publishers willingly choose to post news on Facebook, as it allows them to sell more subscriptions, grow their audiences and increase advertising revenue.

This is technically not correct. Publishers can opt out from Google Search if they want to, so one may also argue that they willingly choose to be on Google as well.

Re:Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto on Tuesday February 16, 2021 @09:23PM (#26161875)
That's what the OP says. It's either security (your wallet) or convenience (exchange).
Re:Bitcoin surpasses $50K as major companies jump into crypto on Tuesday February 16, 2021 @09:22PM (#26161865)
If you can get people to buy/use it (like BTC, ETH, and countless others did), yes it would be.

The number of coins is just a definition. Bitcoin has satoshis (similar to cents) that represent one millionth of a Bitcoin. You could have defined it such that Bitcoin is actually a single coin worth $1T, and BTC is 1/21,000,000th of it.
