Also the dark theme is something not everybody likes. Especially with red-green inside. Think of color-blind people. My eyes are in pain from just trying to focus.
Re:How much memory do you need in 2024 to run 1M concurrent tasks?
on Friday November 29, 2024 @01:27AM (#42271404)
Regarding Java I'm pretty sure that benchmark is broken at least a little bit and testing something else as not specifying initial size for ArrayList means list of size 10 which gets resized all the time when `add()` is called, leading to big amount of unused objects needing garbage collection.

The most surprising for me was reading that VIA is still creating x86 processors. The last time I've heard it was C3. Or maybe they are used by China just as x86 license holders?
Re:Switching to 5Ghz WiFi made the Raspberry Pi fly again
on Friday October 11, 2024 @06:45AM (#41808278)
I've seen/fixed similar issue in someone else's Windows 10 notebook few days ago. It seems to have been caused by wifi having the same ssid for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and not-that-great signal so OS was for some reason "constantly" switching between those two. After forcing it to use just 5 GHz it went from 1 Mbps to 100 Mbps. Reading this sooner would have prevented my headache.

I know that not everybody has time, money, opportunity, etc. to go to Del Prado to see art with their own eyes but I have to say that seeing photos on my monitor before and seeing it in reality were completely different and not not transferable experiences. The light, those details and often even size of the canvas which is measured in meters and not centimeters are all incredible. For example Las Meninas is basically 3x3 meters or you can easily spend 1 hour looking at The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch. I will remember this visit till the end of my life.

There's no citation for this in Wiki and Soviet Union and Germany signed Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact not that long after. So this quote (and Soviet Union/Russia in general as it's obvious why they would "help") is really not trustworthy and not based on evidence.

That's no whitewashing. Not sure where you got this idea from but if you read the link to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_Agreement you'd realize that what you wrote is completely incorrect and almost a lie. Czechia was not invited to that meeting and European superpowers decided that it should cede to Germany. Plus Germany invaded Czechia in 1939. Czechs would go to war and lost it in days (just look at the size and position) and would be a pariah in Europe if they didn't listen.
Re:Ask HN: How did yall meet your SO?

+2 for Tinder. Not me, I've met my wife through a mutual friend who knew both of us are single but 2 of my very good friends met their future wives there. Another terminally online friend met a girl on Discord in a game server. Started chatting, met in real life and the rest is history. Rest of my friends met offline: same hobby/friends/asking out in a bar/colleague/neighbor/etc.

Spring (boot) works exactly the same. We once found that 30% of CPU time is spent parsing path regexes in Controllers somewhere deep inside the Spring. We had rewritten 1500 endpoints to hardcoded paths and it fixed CPU usage.

Re:Digital Signature Service Demonstration WebApp

This is an open-source demo app showcasing how to add qualified sign/seal and timestamps to documents according to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIDAS i.e. all EU trusts documents correctly sign with it. Timestamps are usually paid (few euro cents each) but there are services like http://tsa.sk.ee which you can use with a limit of free timestamps per month per IP address. Each and every court will trust any timestamped and signed document (you need to you your own qualified signature and a qualified timestamp from a qualified TSA of course)

EU has an eIDAS law about qualified signatures and timestamps for years with even an original open-source implementation from EU. You can add it to the PDF and keep it on your machine. It's verifiable by any court in the EU because it's "unbreakable". We use it for every document when communicating with officials and I think more people should do that. You don't need cool blockchains and stuff when you have cryptography.

Finally. And as a former Jumpshot employee (left 3 years ago) all I can say is good riddance. They were doing everything they were exposed of and worse.

No. They've sold just 35%. Still using the same offices and data as they have been for years and will for many more years.
Re:Mozilla and Opera remove Avast extensions from their add-on stores

It's not tied to your identity, but if you go frequently to some social sites with the same user id in the url (LinkedIn and others) it's possible to match that an HW id to a real name. Also when you buy coupon or goods which are tied to you just by unique ID the data science team could see that in the clickstream and it they were evil enough they could just use that (holiday coupon for example) for themselves. Or private photos shared by unique ID in url. Basically they (employees) could see everything from navigation bar and try to find out who it belongs to.
Source: Jumpshot/Avast employees
Funny example: They (developers) could see a man from Alaska (IP based) looking for an info about yeti and then going to buy a rifle in the same session.

Jumpshot (https://www.jumpshot.com/) is created, owned and operated by Avast (same people sitting in the same offices using same data/servers). 100% of data use for the analytics is provided by that browser plugin. Nothing is anonymized. They (Jumpshot) have unique user/hardware id, url, referrer, IP all browser information and others so they can create their reports. I'm surprised that it surprises anyone after the years of them doing that. They (Avast) are not a nice company.

It's quite easy to do that when our cat is asleep. It usually doesn't wake her up when you rub her feet during that and she looks like she even enjoys it because of the rubbing.
