It doesn't try to install a package manager, except for Node Package Manager, Performant Node Package Manager, and the Bun package manager. Except for one of those three package managers, it doesn't install any package managers.

They don't advocate for diversity that's for sure
Where is the server getting information about the user's timezone from pray tell?

It doesn't matter if it's being checked on the client or the server. If the user controls what your code sees, they can fake it.

Whether it's legal or not is really a moot point. They're using Stripe to take payments, which will close a merchant's account if they get too many chargebacks.

IMHO, it would be better to eat a few refunds than risk changing my payment provider.

You could definitely create it with Twilio, you might be able to do most of it without even writing any code by using Twilio Studio.

https://www.twilio.com/studio

That's an unpleasant thing to say about the people running Hacker News.

Take a look at the search page.

> The doc recommended I up the dosage, but I could see this would eventually lead me to a straitjacket.

That sounds like they're making a pretty strong argument for stopping taking the Doctor recommended medication.

Re:I built an app to fix my depression on Thursday October 08, 2020 @01:11AM (#24716055)
And if a hobbyist, dietician, personal trainer, life coach, painter, or choreographer was telling people to stop taking their perscribed medications before they end up in a straight-jacket and instead just diet/exercise/paint/dance/etc then yes I think those people would be just as culpable for any harm they caused.

There's a difference between "these things might help the symptoms of depression" and "Doctor telling you to take life saving medication, what if it makes you crazy? I have no evidence that it will, but I feel like it might. You should use this app instead"

> It’s an online app that can help you tap into your hidden emotions and release them so they no longer influence your behaviour or cause depressive symptoms.

Did you read the article at all?

Here is a quote where they state the app can stop the cause of your depressive symptoms. That clear cut enough for you? Or do you still want to be wilfully obtuse?

Re:I built an app to fix my depression on Thursday October 08, 2020 @12:38AM (#24715868)
It's literally the title of this post.
Re:I built an app to fix my depression on Thursday October 08, 2020 @12:20AM (#24715755)
I can't find anything on your website or the app's website listing your qualifications. How are you qualified to advise people on how to fix their depression?

What medical studies and approval has your app been through?

If this article persuades even a single person to ditch their prescribed medication in favour of your app—after all who would want to end up in a straight-jacket—and that person then harms themselves, how are you going to deal with that?

Re:Ask HN: Captcha Alternatives? on Monday August 31, 2020 @09:54PM (#24337785)
So my script has a 1 in 3 chance of getting the CAPTCHA correct each time, with just a random guess?

A regular 6 character alphanumeric CAPTCHA has a 1 in 56,800,235,584 chance as a comparison…

As someone who's had to read/review thousands of CVs, interesting != good. Your CV is incredibly difficult to grok, if I have a stack of CVs to get through and I can't immediately identify the information I need, I'm probably going to pass
Re:Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages? on Friday March 30, 2018 @08:17AM (#16715481)
I did read the entire thread, the site developer offered two different solutions. But the other commenters seemed to dismiss both suggestions, preferring to fetch their pitchforks instead.

They do have permission though. The people used granted permission when they submitted their face to uifaces.com, in fact they even went so far as to submit their faces to the "authorised" section on uifaces

> those awesome folks allow their faces to be used on live products

They might not have ever imagined that their faces would be used in this manner, but they did give their permission.

I worked with the author on getting it published and the code is on GitHub (linked from the post) for people to try it out, sorry if that doesn't meet the requirements. Should I have posted the Github link directly?
Re:Introducing Surface Laptop on Tuesday May 02, 2017 @04:35PM (#14250318)
They don't use their personal accounts. Accounts are managed for students in much the same way as the would be for a business hosted with Google Apps - https://edu.google.com/
Sketch, Keynote, Paw

I'm a developer, but I also talk at community groups and conferences. I know there are alternatives (Inkscape, Impress, Postman) but they're all missing one or more features I use frequently, or are just not as polished.

That being said I'll probably make the change to Linux for my many development machine at some point and keep an Air or something lightweight as a conference/presentation machine.

They bill out 20x what he earns because they're not just billing for his time. They're billing for the time of the sales person who chased the lead, the time of the team who read the brief and developed the proposal, the time of the people who travelled to the client to deliver the presentation, the time of the secretary who handled the callback and the time of all the people who did all the same things the half a dozen other times where they DIDN'T get the contract.
Re:Django 1.11 beta 1 released on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @05:52AM (#13694696)
Two Scoops is a great book, and my personal go to reference for best practices. But I don't know if I would recommend it for someone looking to learn Django for the first time as it is more of a reference.

For someone completely new to Django I'd likely recommend Tango with Django or Hello Web App

Re:Removing Python 2.x support from Django for version 2.0 on Thursday January 19, 2017 @12:44PM (#13437662)
Pyston, Jython, IronPython; they're all esoteric when compared to CPython. And while Pyston or similar may continue their own Python 2 implementation many library/package authors will simply not support it. So your interpreter may not be EOL'd but you'll very quickly find the package versions you rely upon will be.
Re:Removing Python 2.x support from Django for version 2.0 on Thursday January 19, 2017 @07:29AM (#13435229)
Says the Python maintainers? And it is completely up to them to say - http://legacy.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0373/#update

Of course you can continue using Python 2.x after 2020 but you will receive no security/bug fixes.

Re:Yahoo discloses hack of 1B accounts on Thursday December 15, 2016 @05:16AM (#13183594)
Don't do that. You've essentially just turned the old hashes into plain-text passwords, and how sure are you that those hashes don't exist in backups anywhere?

There is an estimated 5k more developer jobs per year in central Scotland than there are developers to fill them, so it is a pretty good time to be a developer here. Especially if you're senior level or above as you'd be in high demand.

Salary is not going to be as high as Silicon Valley, but living expenses are much lower[1]. A senior developer can expect to earn around £40k

I actually live in Glasgow and work in Edinburgh, and both cities are fantastic. Glasgow has more vibrant nightlife and music scene; while Edinburgh is so historic with beautiful architecture.

Also our politicians are not as bat shit crazy as the rest of the UK which is nice.

Your unittests should have caught both of those errors. Also Django does use linting: https://github.com/django/django/blob/master/tox.ini#L36-L41
