Are you referring to the Curse of Knowledge?

What you are describing also sounds a little like the Dunning-Kruger effect:

Though it might also be worth mentioning that Tumblr is a total pain in the * to use precisely because of that customization. Every dang page is different and I never know what to click. Worse, Tumblr is so slow that every wrong click is an expensive loss of time and patience. On the rare occasion that I find a Tumblr worth following, I just use the RSS feed because the site is too frustrating.
This was discussed in the book "Flashboys". The real challenge with high speed trading in the long distance communication between the stuff on Wall Street and the commodities action going on in Chicago. That long distance communication is what many of these towers are being used for.
Re:Ask HN: How to learn new things better? on Sunday January 01, 2017 @10:51PM (#13298922)
I've been using Duolingo to learn Italian. It was awesome up until about 40% fluency, then it lost its effectiveness. It was a great way to learn basic vocabulary and sentence structure, but after that I learned more by just reading my news in Italian.
Re:Tesla footage of braking before crash ahead [video] on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @02:56PM (#13273148)
Yes! This cannot be stressed enough.

Not just for car accidents, but this is true for emergencies in general. Always check your surroundings!

For example, if you find a guy laying on the sidewalk, he could have stepped on a down power line, slipped on ice, or recently gotten attacked by some punk who might still be nearby. If you don't know why he is unconscious, proceed with caution.

What, if any, effect might this have on Android, given that its all Java?
I came here to ask about that too. From what I've heard elsewhere, it sounds like Google is smart enough to figure out if you are posting unrelated content just for SEO purposes, and that engaging in such practices is a good way to get Google-smacked.

If it's just JSON, can't you do this:

head -10 myfile.json

Re:Sergey Brin's Resume as a Student on Monday February 16, 2015 @03:21AM (#9055857)
My thought too, especially when I noticed the typo:

"...similar tastes to extrapolate how much the you will like some other movies..."

Headline bait. I was expecting some exciting breakthrough in nuclear reactor technology or something.
Re:Paperwork: An open source Evernote alternative on Sunday January 25, 2015 @12:28PM (#8943462)
I think a very simple step that could be taken to improve adoption would be making it more obvious that you don't need an email to try the demo. I would mention it right on the demo "Signup" page.

Judging by some of the comments here, something that simple would likely get more people to try it.

My experience as well. Plus, my passwords became stronger. If I know I won't remember it anyway, why stop at 10-15 character passwords? I just crank it up to 40 characters of gibberish, and let LastPass do the remembering. I love it.
Re:Drone carrying drugs crashes near US-Mexico border on Thursday January 22, 2015 @06:10PM (#8932408)
Blasting the drone out of the sky is probably not the best option. Drones are becoming more popular for legitimate uses like photography, farming, and maybe deliveries in the future. Without knowing what the drone is carrying, it would be hard to determine which ones should be shot down and which are serving some legitimate purpose.

For that reason, I think the ideal solution would involve capturing the drone somehow, maybe with a net of some kind. Innocent drones could be marked with contact information, allowing them to be returned to their owner in the event that they are mistakenly captured.

As an added benefit, harmlessly capturing the drone would provide more useful evidence for the police investigating drug crimes.

I'm confused. How does this work without inserting any code on your site?
Re:NSA Reports Improper Surveillance of Americans on Thursday December 25, 2014 @03:44PM (#8797146)
"The heavily-redacted reports include examples of data on Americans being e-mailed to unauthorized recipients, stored in unsecured computers and retained after it was supposed to be destroyed, according to the documents."

Therein lies one of the major problems with these mass surveillance programs. Not only are they collecting information on millions of innocent Americans, but now it appears that they are not properly securing that data. This whole thing just makes my blood boil.

Re:FBI boss 'concerned' by smartphone encryption plans on Friday September 26, 2014 @05:18PM (#8374931)
"I am a huge believer in the rule of law, but I am also a believer that no-one in this country is beyond the law,"

So protecting your phone from thieves means you are "beyond the law"? Sure. I'll leave my doors unlocked while I'm at it.

This really gets annoying to me too. I think the media is largely to blame for it. Every city with a kid who started a website is referred to as "Silicon <insert word that describes the local terrain>".

Likewise, they call every person with a blog an "entrepreneur". I think the reason it annoys me is because it gives people a false impression of what it means to start a real business at a time when we need more people to start businesses. They have unrealistic expectations, and end up getting turned off to the whole concept when it doesn't work out like in "The Social Network".

Re:Depression and feeling like an outsider on Monday September 22, 2014 @05:28PM (#8352760)
I have mild depression, and one of the best treatments I have found is martial arts. Physical activity in general is helpful, but martial arts in particular has a very calming effect. Most people assume it has something to do with pounding the crap out of a punching bag, but it is more than that. There is a big emphasis on overcoming your limits, and this has a very positive effect on self-esteem.

It also teaches you how to look inward at your own flaws. In martial arts, if you can't do a technique, there are no teammates to blame. It's on you to persevere and keep trying until you get it right. But you don't want to hurt your training partner, so you have to stay calm and focused no matter how frustrating it gets. And when you do get it, it feels amazing. That confidence and calmness carries over into other areas of your life, and you feel like a million bucks.

A few other students in my class told me that it had a similar effect on them. To be clear, it won't replace proper medical treatment, especially for severe depression. But I highly recommend it as an additional form of treatment.

Re:Gravit – Open-source design tool on Saturday September 13, 2014 @09:29AM (#8312305)
Nice work! It might be cool to allow people to share designs. So if I was creating a web page, I could browse through web pages other people have created and import one, then use that as a foundation for my own design. At any rate, this is pretty cool.
I like Rackspace, but I wonder if and how their position on net neutrality might change if CenturyLink is serious about buying them.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Evernote. Unless I am misunderstanding your question.

I just save things in Evernote. Physical documents get scanned and uploaded. I also use BitTorrent Sync for things like music and videos. Extremely sensitive stuff like banking documents are encrypted and synced as well. I don't upload that stuff.

Re:Lending Club Can Be a Better Bank Than the Banks on Thursday September 04, 2014 @12:24AM (#8266759)
I don't know about federal regulations, but state regulations have made things difficult. I can't use lending club here in Ohio, and a few other states don't allow it either.

Here is more about that: http://www.lendacademy.com/why-some-states-dont-allow-p2p-le...
