Re:The Continued Trajectory of Idiocy in the Tech Industry on Wednesday September 18, 2024 @08:55AM (#41579133)
As someone working at a very large bank. I strongly disagree. The bank spun up a new business to experiment with blockchain technology and went hard at it for several years until they recently sidelined those projects... In favour of AI

The amount of internal hype across all areas of the business (especially in the tech areas of the business) with regards to AI has been frankly stunning to witness.

My speculation on this is that China/Russia/whoever targets ISP's in order to identify people by IP that have come to their attention somehow. Your credentials aren't the only point of interest, your credentials gives up subscriber information name/email/address/etc. That's pretty valuable from an intelligence standpoint.
Sure. And we should do nothing but subsistence farming as well. But that's not really practical.
You might be surprised to learn that a lot of the world uses polymer banknotes which are siignificantly more durable and last a lot longer than traditional 'paper' based currencies. The are incredibly hard to tear/break and they do not wear out or stretch. We've been using these in Australia since 1996.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymer_banknote

Having handled a fair amount of US currency I can say it _feels_ disgusting to handle after a certain amount of wear and often reminds me of a moist tissue. It also doesn't help that visually the notes all look very similar (as opposed to on polymer notes which have significantly different appearances and colours)

Japan especially as they are particularly well known for their civic honesty.
Re:Ask HN: Any Hardware Startups Here? on Thursday July 06, 2023 @10:55AM (#36616951)
Uh. 50,000 Lumens? That's a lotta lumens. Which is awesome. But that's also gonna be running at Imalent MS18 flashlights (which to be fair peak at 100,000 lumens) get well over 120 degrees C in temperature.

Your design seems to have cooling fins. But If it's radiating noticeable amount of heat, I'll only be running it in winter.

Re:Ask HN: Any Hardware Startups Here? on Thursday July 06, 2023 @10:25AM (#36616310)
Hello. These look great. But a few things that I'd like: 1) The glass does not specify a volume. 2) I'd love a wine-glass, highball and old fashioned style as well.\ 3) The Whisky & Spirits Tumbler does say 'lead free crystal' but doesn't specify it's titanium glassware. Is that correct? Cheers!
Re:Hacking root EPP servers to take control of zones on Tuesday June 13, 2023 @01:07AM (#36305670)
From the article:

>> Speaking with Vince (the administrator of the .ai zone) over WhatsApp, we confirmed that compromising this server would give us full control over any .ai domain:

>> Once administrative access is gained to the CoCCA application, it is possible to control the nameservers for every domain for that ccTLD.

The point is to control domains in a ccTLD. Arbitrary domain hijacking is bad...

Re:Hacking root EPP servers to take control of zones on Tuesday June 13, 2023 @01:04AM (#36305639)
This is huge! You could control entire ccTLDs?
Re:The Locksport Network Directory on Sunday May 07, 2023 @09:41AM (#35851438)
A page with a huge amount of lock picking and locksport resources / links.
If that's the case, why can't they coerce Apple into compromising their phone entirely? Why stop at the app store? Or the browser?
Re:Household debt hit record $16.9T on Thursday February 16, 2023 @09:01PM (#34829725)
Uh. Did you miss a decimal point? 16.9 trillion divided by 200 million is $84,500. That's a huge difference.
Re:Introducing ChatGPT Plus on Sunday February 05, 2023 @05:11PM (#34670155)
Perhaps I should have added how I noticed in the first place. I gave it a block of code with a few nested loops and asked it how many times would it run. For a small number 5 x 5 x 5, it calculated correctly. But for 5000 x 5000 x 5000 it gave the wrong answer.

I'd like to see an integration into wolfram alpha or something. That would be amazing.

Re:Introducing ChatGPT Plus on Wednesday February 01, 2023 @10:51PM (#34621809)
Not being able to do simple math is a surprisingly huge bug IMO

Me: 5000 * 5000 * 5000 ChatGPT: The result of 5000 x 5000 x 5000 is 125,000,000,000,000. Me: 5000 * 5000 ChatGPT: The result of 5000 x 5000 is 25,000,000. Me: 5000 * 25000000 ChatGPT: The result of 25,000,000 x 5000 is 125,000,000,000.

Integrations with services like wolfram alpha would be nice as well (although shouldn't be necessary to solve basic multiplication)

Re:The Uber leak exposes the global war on workers on Tuesday July 12, 2022 @08:56AM (#32069187)
Uber took over my local airport, a 100$ fare home now costs $200+ when, as you'd expect, a plane load of people call for an Uber all at once. 'Surge pricing'.

Now there's a rank for exactly FIVE (count em FIVE) taxis, a 15 minute walk from the terminal exit and a line a couple hundred meters long for the bus. This isn't a small regional airport. This is the international/domestic airport for a city of 5 million people.

Absolute madness and just another point of frustration I have to endure now when travelling.

Aren't there bigger issues...? Like no atmosphere protecting from radiation and things like space debris/projectiles?
This is a surprisingly timely post given the recent "Honest Government Ad | Carbon Credits & Offsets" from JuiceMedia[1]. It's more Australian focused, but it sums it up quite succinctly.

Re:Casting Silver Bullets (2013) on Thursday April 07, 2022 @02:25AM (#30941255)
Is there a reason these couldn't be turned more accurately on a lathe? Never seen anyone do lathe work to make bullets, but it seems like it'd be fairly well suited, especially since silver isn't as soft as lead.

Re:Yellowcake Shaped the West on Monday August 02, 2021 @10:46PM (#28045210)
I find reads like this interesting, but I'm discouraged when things like "The Nutex Company made radium condoms." are mentioned but are also not quite right[1].

I have doubts now about how well everything was researched which is a shame because it's an otherwise interesting article.

Re:Why All Printers Suck, Even the Best Ones (2016) on Sunday August 01, 2021 @11:11AM (#28026824)
You might be surprised to learn there are 3D printers with what is essentially a inkjet print head in them to do full colour 3D prints. Search up, Mimaki, HP Jet Fusion and ColorJet technology to start.

Sadly you can't use them for printing on paper though!

Re:Microsoft Office 2010: Can’t be activated anymore? on Sunday August 01, 2021 @10:57AM (#28026690)
Microsoft (or any other company) wants to shut down the activation servers/match making servers/<servers on which the product relies> because it's no longer profitable and the app/game/whatever is no longer profitable? Please! By all means, go ahead. But on the way to the shutdown command, if you could please release an official patch so I don't need to visit the piratebay to activate software I've already paid for. That would be much appreciated by those who, for whatever reason, are still using that software. I'd like to think that positive actions taken by developers to be considerate of customers, even if they are 10+ years old, will be of benefit to them in the future.

I highly doubt many people are running 10 year old software because they refuse to upgrade, rather there's usually something specific about it that wasn't included/built for/whatever in newer versions.

Re:NSA Mobile Device Best Practices on Wednesday July 28, 2021 @10:45AM (#27984396)
Running your malicious actions without writing to disk is a very effective way of bypassing a lot of security and forensics technologies.

As soon as you make changes have persistence you have proof and some operators are not oaky with that.

There's a difference between a crash where the outcome was not deliberate vs say a deliberate attack on a convoy by ramming cars at it.

Accident implies it's not premeditated or deliberate, which, i'd wager, is the case of the vast majority of road incidents. That doesn't absolve drivers of guilt if they were in the wrong or doing something wrong at the time. But it does mean it wasn't deliberate.

Edit: You also forget that things like wildlife, mechanical failures and other things outside the control of a driver can be the cause of car crashes as well.

In case you hadn't seen it, Australia tried to ban the use of cash payments for higher value transactions. It didn't end up passing but it is expected to be revived in future.

Re:I want a computer that I own on Monday March 08, 2021 @08:57PM (#26394449)
You can also use one device to hotspot another thus providing data without the added risks that come with having another mystery binary blob.

You'll need a external battery pack though for longer days away from home.

Re:I want a computer that I own on Monday March 08, 2021 @08:35PM (#26394271)
Great for specific purposes, but not exactly a computer 'you own' and want to do things with.

Tails always starts from the same clean state and everything you do disappears automatically when you shut down Tails.

Ie, nothing persists, which means you loose everything each time.

OpenBSD is also an extremely secure operating system. But also not terribly practical as a long term desktop environment.

Plus it doesn't solve issues with underlying hardware trusts.
