I've been poking around mesh networks and this whole Reticulum thing seems pretty amazing.

The Nomad network built on top of Reticulum feels like the BBS days again. Low-stim text base alternate internet. No doom scrolling, lots of lurking.

MeshChatX has been the easiest way into this world that I've found so far.

Re:LLM Voice on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:35PM (#50292911)
I find a lot of LLM writing exhausting to read. It is like I have to exert extra energy to attenuate my BS detector to cut through what is actually being said, and why.
Re:Raspberry Pi Zero 3W and Pi 4 Model A spotted in device trees on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:07AM (#50274939)
Yeah! Let's see that!
This looks great!

I noticed that the strumming seems a bit off on chord changes. A good default is to let strings that don't change on chord change to continue to ring through. Just think about the strings as actual strings and the kinds of things that happen to them when you play.

Also, different songs will have different techniques like bar chords that may have less brightness, palm muting etc.

I'm working on a physical guitar digital luthier kit right now as part of a project at Toronto Metropolitan University working with disabled musicians. Our aim is to release it so anyone can build one.

Here is our documentation of examining an existing assistive guitar built a few years ago in the UK. https://www.designingsoundfutures.org/kellycaster-mark-1/

Now we're taking lessons learned from that and working on robust versions for touring musicians, and variations to adapt to different assistive and artistic needs.

Great to see others doing nifty work with this guitar based music stuff.

Not sure about other boards. I image it could. It specifically is supported on RPi5 (and I think 4) but also Ubuntu on PC. I opted for DietPi to keep it simple and lean.

MIDI controller for mapping to knobs.

What I like is being able to type in digits so I can set very specific modulation rates that are in sync with other parts of the music.

The NUC was used and just cost me a replacement fan. USB audio interface was cheap from online classified. The touchscreen was just over a $100 on AliExpress, plus a bunch of cables of various sizes and angles to connect it all.

I've done the bare minimum to get this all going and haven't done any optimizations. Sampling at 48kHz. Load is about 5-6% even with a complex effects chain. I don't notice any latency, but I haven't measured it. Latency isn't an issue for the experimental instrument I play. The electroduochord.

Here is my i5 NUC touchscreen audio cyberdeck running DietPi + PiPedal.

This thing is awesome and I'm never wasting money another guitar pedal again.

I'm totally loving amp modelling and convolution reverb using PiPedal https://rerdavies.github.io/pipedal/
Those folks don't work there anymore.
Re:Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Big Box of Cables on Friday September 11, 2026 @05:22PM (#49665564)
Do you get those nightmares where you're trying to solve some problem but you don't have the right cables, and then the dream evolves into searching for the cables, but they're all wrong, and what was it you were trying to fix in the first place? Maybe this is why every drawer is now overflowing with cables.

"accountability gap" oooh. I like that term. That really seems at the root of a lot of problems.
Re:A Badass Way to Connect Programs Togther What Is OSC? on Saturday August 29, 2026 @02:46PM (#49492239)
I use OSC quite a bit for building experimental musical instruments and controllers. I use it because it is so simple to implement with low cost ESP32 or ESP8266 controllers, and can also quickly build GUI interfaces using TouchOSC.

The problem I have with it is compatibility amongst devices. For performances I bring my own WiFi router and everything is hardcoded with their own IP address. This controller can control this but not that. Everything is rolled custom.

Recently I've been doing a lot more MIDI stuff at a part-time job, and the compatibility is really awesome. I'm able to make things that just connect with different software and other hardware and it just works. You have to get your head around the spec a bit, but having things just work has been awesome.

MIDI2 is still not fully there. There are TinyUSB implementations rolling out now, so hopefully that all gets a lot easier.

There is also a proposed extension of OSC with a discovery layer. O2 and O2lite is an attempt to solve the connectivity and compatibility issues of OSC. I haven't tried it yet. https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rbd/blog/nime-blog22may2022.html

Re:Sonic Pi v5 Released on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @12:34PM (#49275064)
Firstly, don't be too self critical of your music making. Doing something is key. You're doing it. You are finding your path. Your path is unique to you, and everything you bring to it and discover along the way shapes how that path meanders. Use what you got and just keep doing.

Second, take a look a PureData. Specifically the variant called PlugData, because it is a little easier to use because of the extensions that it includes, nicer UI, and it can run as a plug-in and integrate with other your DAW, or other software.

I've been using Pd off and on for about 20 years and I still feel I don't know it. I learn just enough to get done what I need to get done. I use it for control system for drone motors that I use to make music, both using a rotary magnetic bow, and as servo drumming actuators. I've also used it for sound and rhythm synthesis for performances.

PureData is an incredible tool for creative building. I'm also using it for a project at a university lab to make an assistive guitar for disabled musicians by running compiled PureData on a Bela Gem Multi. You can even use Pd on a Daisy Seed to make custom effects pedals or synth modules. Anyhoo, check it out. It is a wonderful playground for the mind.

It looks like the pin doesn't take much load. It looks like the pin holds the teeth open, while the load is on the shoulders of the entryway.
Re:Cyberpunk Video Games on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @10:25AM (#49169471)
Uh, have you played in the comedic cyberpunk alternate cold war world of Jazzpunk?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/250260/Jazzpunk_Directors...

Collection and recycling these safely at scale seems mind boggling difficult. Various batteries, electronics, resin encrusted elements, oils, plastics, and mouthy guckiness.

I would love to see how this process works. Banning them seems to be the most economic and safest solution.

So glad I clicked this random HN item, because now I learned about tput.
From the Ars Technica article... OpenAI’s headline “net loss” number of just over $5 billion in 2024 ballooned to nearly $39 billion in 2025. But the 2025 number includes a significant accounting charge related to investor valuations that shifted amid the company’s 2025 conversion to a for-profit structure. The Financial Times cites “a person familiar with the matter” in reporting that this non-recurring charge was approximately $30 billion and that OpenAI’s 2025 net loss amounted to a more reasonable-looking $8 billion without it.

Huh? Where did $30 billion go?

Re:Raspberry Pi 5 – 16 GB, $350 on Thursday June 11, 2026 @08:46AM (#48489606)
I've never minded paying more at Adafruit to help support them. The support they have provided, with documentation, examples, libraries, etc. has been immensely valuable to my hobbies and work.
Ah, just found the node that says that "there is no up/down/left/right".

I do not understand this space.

I really like this, but moving around a bit I find that things kind of seem to rotate which is disorienting. When this loads, the photo is to the right of the cake. After zipping around a bit in this space, the photo is then to the left of the cake. Is that a rotation? Is there a way to lock the orientation?

One of my favourite albums is Stuart Dempster's Underground Overlays From The Cistern Chapel.

A group of trombonists all playing in a giant underground water tank with incredibly long reverb.

I'm just going to mention Pure Data here, because I'm always surprised when people don't know about it. https://puredata.info/

I use it in my art and music practice to interface with hardware like a GameTrak controller, and to control drone motors for bowing/drumming physical things for computer controlled electroacoustic music. I also use it at a university lab for the development of assistive musical instruments for disabled musicians. It is both an extremely useful tool, and an incredibly fun musical playground for the mind.

The Plugdata variant of Puredata is particularly handy. https://plugdata.org/

Plugdata can run as a plugin in your DAW, compile to a standalone plugin, and compile and load sketches onto a Daisy Seed (https://electro-smith.com/products/daisy-seed).
