Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Sunday November 01, 2026 @05:11AM (#50324155)
> skill atrophy is real

Did you tried adding skill.md?

jokes aside, I agree - models are getting crazy good with CLIs and I kinda gave up learning all the syntax on every tool etc. it makes no sense - what I usually try to do after some _serious_ fkup/incident is to write a human-redable summary and some deterministic scripts which help to debug/fix the problem; for the future when I will eventually ran out of tokens, lol

but aside that I think "the skill" is shifting and a lot of stuff becomes irrelevant indeed; more useful seems to know how to setup your agents so they have access to relevant data easily to investigate and secure your infra and so on; e.g. recently I /llms/ spotted major misconfiguration in reverse proxy setup after I gave it access to all terraform/ansible stuff and let it just probe the hosts/network

Re:Herdr has released native app on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:37AM (#50314451)
depends on what you're looking for - for whole worktrees setup I use worktrunk [1] which handles all stuff like spinning up deps, containers, envs so ports do not clash, every worktree have clean slate so local tests work etc. solves like _a lot_ of problems I ran with worktrees in real-life apps

I started using dagu fairly recently so the rest is kinda a ball of various ruby scripts at this point so I can't give any good pointers here as I have no idea yet xd but overall I have some deterministic stuff (pick up some issue, setup worktree first, resume if crashed, implement, review and so on) build around just running claude/codex (one-shot)

there are _tons_ of solution for orchestration so it's really hard to choose from tbh; I gave herdr try this morning and ported my scripts so it works with their desktop app - looks kinda nice I guess; dagu have scheduler as well which is cool, but connecting different machines to single herdr server also looks kinda fun... so I guess I will continue experimenting until then ;)

edit: damn scripting herdr with mods open new window of opportunities, I dig it!

Re:Herdr has released native app on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:37AM (#50313991)
kinda related, anyone using simpler workflow orchestrators like dagu? (https://github.com/dagucloud/dagu I am not affiliated)

at the end of a day I started to one-shot some simpler workflows; e.g. I already have various scripts for spinning work-trees, setting up deps, picking up a clearly defined issue, waiting for some delayed CI checks, doing reviews with different agents, workflow waiting for another workflow etc. - without passing context between

ah yeah, golden times of crawling google when they actually didn't monitor ipv6 traffic properly against scraping (seo monitoring tools were first to drive 'adoption', lol)
been using https://github.com/SimonBure/presse for all my pdf needs for a while - works great thus far (not affiliated); simple cli is in most case all you will ever need
> AI writes unarchitectes code if you don't have a system for developing and maintaining a consistent architecture over time (...)

I work at a ~15y old codebase; guess that the famous "architecture" is - a glue of half-baked solutions, unfinished ideas and inconsistencies. Recently I discovered there are 6 different ways used to create audit trails in the app. The "human memory" lives until person decided to switch job or is fired. Then the next person re-invents the wheel and cycle continues.

I suggest taking an honest look at "the architecture" people are so proud of - you might realize there is not much moat there after all. But then again - I mostly write cruds - so that's probably core of the problem, lol

release it to GH and disable issues and discussions tab and call it a day?

(personally I would love to see it, the idea of a single binary of all that stuff struck a chord)

I think it's a bit for than a phase

for some it will, for some it won't; but I don't think you can stop the change (for better or worse)

Re:Anti-Patterns in Software Blogging on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:27PM (#50007881)
if you do it for yourself I think it could be fun - getting out some thoughts out of your head onto the virtual paper

if you're doing it for engagement and internet likes - hard to tell; I think it's really difficult to grab ppl attention nowadays so either you're gonna create 'controversial' pieces ("Software is solved", "Software is not solved" etc.) to lure some specific crowd or you're gonna be disappointed xd

(I do still write from time to time, all the blogs of my past coworkers I subscribed via rss feeds are dead)

Re:Picard 3.0 Released on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @11:59AM (#49980423)
I did a full circle and finally self-host navidrome (since this year)

It's a funny feeling - after paying for streaming services for years you realize you barely supported any artists and do not own anything at the same time

Re:10 Tells of a Slop UI on Sunday September 27, 2026 @12:34PM (#49868258)
yup; I AI slopped new design of some some site/portal I still maintain and got nothing but positive feedback - old version used "handcrafted" bootstrap 2 code so maybe the bar was just very low :p

I think engineers have very different bar for slop than most of the people - which could explain obnoxious amount of ai generated menus/banners in the actual physical space nowadays

Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:10PM (#49836772)
weird talk; is not reading any code _at all_ is the new standard now? I do happily ai-slop side projects here and there but seems like just going full steam ahead _at work_ is ok? sorry, I meant - is the future now? xd

Lol, almost forgot about that cringe $6.5b video announcement - thanks for the reminder!

took few sessions to re-slop this to OpenSubsonic (navidrome compat) backend; didn't even looked once at the code, I love and hate the future we live in

thanks again for sharing!

Re:Fastpotify on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @02:48PM (#49526266)
I discovered explo too and AI slopped my own solution a while back for the discover weekly from listenbrainz xD (navidrome-listenbrainz-jams on GH) - aside the fact that listenbrainz had technical issues for a bit - does the job for me; maybe I should add support for last.fm playlists as those seems to be more diverse I would say (but less API-friendly)
Re:Where Did All the Public Bathrooms Go? on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @07:57AM (#49447451)
I just LOVE that you can find a public (and well maintained that) toilet in Japan within a walking distance wherever you are. It's just so... civilized.

I often see ppl urinating in the public here in Europe - taxi drivers in the bushes where I talk walks, two days ago I saw elder folks just doing it near the sidewalk; but can I blame them? - often you just can't find a goddamn toilet even if you want to; so humiliating when you're just forced to do it because of - you know - body

Re:New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @04:51AM (#49445815)
thanks for this link! I was constantly struggling with remote-ipad setup - tried so many things (including paid options), but everything was _iffy_ at best (on-call4live, lol)

And I'm also gonna ride my M1Max Studio until it dies (hopefully it will outlive me xD)

Re:Quake – 30th Anniversary Update on Friday August 07, 2026 @02:25AM (#49206600)
so awesome; as a side note I still host quake net pl (plz do not visit it, it's hosted on my home NAS and currently supports up to 10rpm xD) which was dedicated to Quake 3 and have origins starting 1998; I need to figure out how to keep it alive once I'm dead, lol

majority of Synology storage-compatibility-related _problems_ can be solved with this: https://github.com/007revad/Synology_HDD_db - seems to 'just work'

unsure about this 'smart storage' as my Syno is too old anyway :)

Re:Firefox Containers Preview on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @02:34AM (#49002638)
> the benefit of containers is that they are all in the same browser. all your settings, extensions, remembered passwords (...)

YMMV that's exactly the downside of containers for me xD

Since Firefox (nightly) introduced multi profiles support I didn't looked back - requires some initial setup as you pretty much need to configure browser from scratch, but that full separation works way better for me - especially that you can e.g. configure same plugin in slightly different way per profile (ad blockers, password managers etc.); and somehow under macos when I have currently active profile and I click on some links (e.g. in slack) it picks up that active profile correctly

Re:Decoy Font on Friday July 17, 2026 @06:55AM (#48945770)
you have to squint, but I don't get why this is so upvoted

similar to recent submission "Ghost Font: A font that humans can read but AI cannot" - which wasn't even a font, but some animation which turned out could be read by LLMs

I dunno, seems like more and more nonsense makes its way to HN recently

> resale value and being able to buy used games for cheap

This is exactly how I do it - I don't have much time for gaming as much as I would like to so I just buy one game at a time (~90% of the time it's used one), finish it, sell it and possibly look for another one; as the catalogue is so big there is no point of hoarding games

I used to own xbox and had digital collection of games - most of them I never even started (much easier to hoard stuff when it's digital); I don't have that console anymore and I was left with a useless collection of stuff I don't own tied to my online account - never doing that again

Overall I hate this news so much, I probably will give up with 'modern' gaming altogether

_no god! please no!!! nooooooo_

can AI collapse already please so I can buy some ram? thx
