Hey fellow Canadian, thanks for sharing – I really like what you guys are doing. Would love to see more recordings.
Re:Abandoning Gitflow and GitHub in favour of Gerrit on Tuesday April 05, 2016 @09:57AM (#11430377)
This is not the only argument in this piece — I'd even argue that it's a minor one. It hardly makes sense to discredit the author and this article based on this GitHub misconception.
Re:One-to-one relationships and subresources in REST APIs on Monday February 23, 2015 @11:44AM (#9095228)
Interesting. I normally try to stay away from the "logged in context" when I'm defining API endpoints since it limits what can be done with the API. I try to define the API for data, and let the consumers decide which data they want to show, as long as they can access this data. For instance, it could make sense for admin users to see other user's cart, but this design makes it impossible.

I would normally go for something like `/cart?user_id={{id}}`, forcing API consumers to pass in the `user_id` (possibly reluctantly defaulting the value to `current_user_id` for convenience.)

So I had a bunch of important stuff to get done today, but now I know what I'll do instead. This is so much fun, well done!
Re:Show HN: A database for browsing and discovering movies on Sunday November 02, 2014 @02:30PM (#8547731)
Well done. I always have a very bad time when trying to figure out which movie I want to watch, most websites have bad navigation / filtering capacities / just unfriendly in general. Movieo solves that problem elegantly.
Re:Highcharts – JavaScript charting framework on Wednesday September 03, 2014 @10:15AM (#8263068)
Other solutions are interesting, yes, but HighCharts is an incredible product with a LOT of features built-in. I've built a reporting tool on top of it and it covers a lot of use cases. Building the same visualization with another tool would require a lot of time, thought and iterations to make the API as simple.

For my use case, it's totally worth every single penny.

Both are viable. We use a contractor that takes a cut (~25% for < 25k claims, 20% for bigger claims IIRC), but I know of companies that do it themselves and hire a SRED specialist to review their application on an hourly contract.
It's actually 80% of the salary for any work that has been done in R&D, but like you said, most of the work isn't.

A few years ago a lot of stuff could be considered as work "between two uncertainties", including non-engineering work such as graphic design, but the rules are much more strict nowadays. I think they still give credits for things that are way too simple to be R&D (ie: normal problem solving), but we've been doing [small] claims for the past 3 years and the rules have been tightened a lot.

Also, doing a claim requires you to provide evidences that you were following a certain R&D methodology. It's definitely worth it, but it's a pain.

Re:I will not hack on your codebase for free in an interview on Wednesday December 04, 2013 @08:58AM (#6846831)
I have to disagree there. A workplace that emphasis on fun at work does not imply bad code quality, nor does it imply good code either. Not sure what the fuss is about ping pong.

Really interesting. Keep us updated!
Re:Ask HN: Have you considered switching from OS X to Linux? on Monday October 14, 2013 @02:37AM (#6545731)
I've been toying with the idea, yeah. Then I got my MacBook Pro stolen and used an old laptop replacement with Ubuntu while I was in the process of replacing it.

Long story short, there are a few things that I couldn't get over within a week: - CTRL-C rather than CMD-C is now a weird contorsion for my hand. - CTRL-C and CTRL-V can't be used for copying and pasting in the terminal. I understand why, but really couldn't get over it. - I think the UI is not polished enough to my likings. It's good, but still lacking. Visual differences and missing proper exposé are at the top of this list. - iPhone integration (disclaimer: I didn't try that hard.)

So I went back to OS X.

Re:Selling Software To Large Businesses on Thursday August 22, 2013 @05:27AM (#6256096)
Incredible read patio11.

I totally am totally used to think like a human (ref : Twenty times as much, you ask? No, transitioning from "pocket lint" to pennies. Stop thinking like a human.)

That said, do you think of your large corporation customers reading this article? I'd be afraid that they would think like human and may feel ripped off, even though they made the right choice when comparing with the other options.

Re:Why did Git become so popular? on Friday November 30, 2012 @11:49AM (#4854011)
I don't know when that was, but at some point the rails (sexy) community pushed for git. That sure helped.

Edit: no pun intended ;)

Re:Show HN: fontBomb - Stylishly destroy the web on Friday July 06, 2012 @12:25PM (#4208430)
There's also a security concern. OP could change the code to a malicious script without anyone noticing.

I'm kinda sure it has to do with hardware acceleration.

Re:Signsquid: The cool way to sign contracts online on Monday January 09, 2012 @03:50PM (#3444191)
You're supposed to know who you're dealing with when on the phone. If you deal with someone you kinda know (met in person before or on the phone), I really don't see how it's a problem.

On the other hand, if you're doing online business, you may not be the direct public for this service.

my 2c.

Re:My husband is a programmer; I have no idea what that means. on Monday December 26, 2011 @10:02AM (#3393027)
I do not have a family but I have yet to be a in a good relationship with a girl that didn't understand (or cared enough to try) what I do. I also have to be highly interested in what she's passionate about.

I'm not that 40-hours type of guy (right, no family). Programming & stuff is my job but also one of my hobbies – that probably makes it far more important for me than non-passionate geeks.
