Re:The Unemployment Rate for People Like You on Saturday November 07, 2009 @12:33AM (#927552)
Unless I am missing something, they contradicted themselves.

The graph shows that the recession IS affecting everyone in all the groups equally.

They are all a few percentage higher than last September, but the ratio is the same as last September.

Instead of doing this by age, gender, race and education they should have shown this by TYPE of job.

Then it would be very uneven.

They should do this kind of graph for health care coverage.

Re:Has Japan designed the world's best bike shed? on Friday November 06, 2009 @04:35AM (#925747)
This is fantastic.

However can you even imagine a "too many bikes" problem in the USA? My town has many bike lanes but bikes have disappeared from even the college campus at an alarming rate as students come in as freshmen with daddy's SUV instead.

Re:Why dolphins are deep thinkers on Monday November 02, 2009 @07:39PM (#918300)
So given this acknowledgment, when will there be a formal protest by governments to Japan to stop their dolphin slaughters? Shouldn't killing dolphins be an international crime?
Re:Skype, Founders Settlement in the Works on Monday November 02, 2009 @12:31AM (#916233)
They are crazy to try to buy it back now, unless it's just a ploy to milk more money out of the original sale.

There are a bunch of lower cost DIY voip services and Google Voice could crush them in a year.

I'm sorry, this is very wrong to do. If you think it's a pest, kill it without making it suffer but don't make any living thing your plaything while you kill it. This is the sign of a sick society, or at least a sick mind.
Re:Google's Eric Schmidt on What the Web Will Look Like in 5 Years on Wednesday October 28, 2009 @07:19AM (#907563)
Shouldn't the title of their article more accurately be:

What Google will MAKE the Web Look Like in 5 Years
(seriously, who's going to change any path they decide to take?!)
Re:Video: Army’s Robot-Man Walks Like the Real Thing on Tuesday October 27, 2009 @09:10AM (#905332)
You know what I worry about, war becoming too "easy".

Drones, robots, etc. with little or no human toll to pay.

Re:XKCD commemerates GeoCities on Monday October 26, 2009 @02:01AM (#902707)
When do we get to retire myspace, which is essentially geocities 2.0 ?
Adding premium content means more ads for it and upselling which will make visiting the site less and less pleasant for "free" content.

But they will never have competitors as they are the only one that owns the rights to display virtually all of their content online, so they pretty much can do whatever they want, it's a monopoly.

Re:Whitehouse.gov now powered by Drupal on Sunday October 25, 2009 @12:24AM (#901249)
I sure hope their email is done a physically different server and hard drive.
Re:The IE CSS Bug Which Cost Me A Month’s Salary on Friday October 23, 2009 @12:52PM (#899123)
IETester will let you effortlessly see your site in IE 5.5, 6, 7, and 8 (simultaneously and free and fast) - if you are on Windows of course

http://my-debugbar.com/wiki/IETester/HomePage

It's the only multi-IE solution I've found (other than VMs) that keeps form elements working properly across versions.

Re:The New CNN.com (First Screenshots) on Friday October 23, 2009 @03:00AM (#898396)
Well they get points for honesty, the word "news" doesn't appear anywhere in their heading. But they have have a huge entertainment section. I guess they are the new MTV where the original meaning of their name has been lost, it's just branding for any content.

(The only time I watch CNN anymore is before 9am when they have CNN Asia/Europe on which is actually real news.)

Re:California says the iPhone costs $599 on Thursday October 22, 2009 @08:49PM (#898044)
So California is close to being the first failed state despite high taxes on luxury items.

Let me guess, CA has low taxes on property, so they have to tax everything else?

Re:The risk psychology of the anti-vaccine movement on Wednesday October 21, 2009 @11:52AM (#894880)
Some key quotes in there to think about:

RotaTeq costs a little under $4 a dose to make.
Merck has sold a total of more than 24 million doses
in the US, most for $69.59 a pop (a 17-fold markup)

In 19th-century England, Jenner’s smallpox vaccine was
known to be effective. But despite the Compulsory
Vaccination Act of 1853, many people still refused
to take it, and thousands died unnecessarily.

All you have to do to get the measles is to inhabit
the airspace of a contagious person within two hours
  of them being there.
There are going to be parts of this country in several years that are going to be darn dangerous to travel to as herd-immunity will be gone for several major diseases. I personally think the anti-vaccine people are way overboard.
Re:Hole for light created on Earth on Saturday October 17, 2009 @08:13AM (#886864)
The phrase "black hole" has no place in that article, that's marketing hype.

Black hole works by gravity. Their device works by reducing reflectivity.

Re:There's no way that balloon could've lifted a 50 lb boy on Friday October 16, 2009 @02:04PM (#885859)
But it lifted an entire day's worth of news. Health care? Afghanistan? Oh look it's a balloon.
Does Google do something like this for their servers for the chat service inside gmail?

I've noticed it can keep http connections open for extremely long times.

Re:Street View: We can trike wherever you like on Friday October 16, 2009 @09:52AM (#885362)
I wonder when they will start mapping the inside of public buildings.
Re:It has blades: Dyson’s little white lie on Wednesday October 14, 2009 @01:29PM (#881738)
It's news that marketeers exagerate to the point of lying in commercials?

All they had to do was say it doesn't have CONVENTIONAL blades. But then 90% of the low IQ market this is aimed at wouldn't know what they mean, so they just left out "conventional".

Re:Barack Obama gets Nobel's Peace Prize on Friday October 09, 2009 @07:48AM (#871149)
While the discussion quality is high, does this really belong on HN?
Re:New machine prints paperbacks on demand for $8 in four minutes on Wednesday October 07, 2009 @08:11AM (#866544)
Remember how in Babylon5 they would turn in yesterday's printed newspaper to get today's news printed on the recycled pages? I think we are headed that way. Because reading on paper just has a certain handiness to it no matter how sophisticated our portable devices are.
Re:Did Google just buy dropbox.com? on Friday October 02, 2009 @11:06AM (#857174)
They are using godaddy nameservers so something must be off there.
Re:Linux kernel swear counts per version on Wednesday September 30, 2009 @03:08AM (#852043)
Is that related to http://www.osnews.com/story/19266/WTFs_m

(could have sworn that was on xkcd but I guess not)

I wonder how many people were labeled as crazy, "got their license at sears" or drunk before this was taken seriously? (note how it goes back to 2004)
Re:China Buys 80 Very High Speed Trains (236 mph) for $4 Billion on Tuesday September 29, 2009 @12:24PM (#850653)
Not trying to be funny, but I am kind of surprised they didn't just buy a few and make copies of them.
Re:A webapp based on a browser bug on visited links color on Sunday September 27, 2009 @09:33AM (#846831)
I guess that's one more IP to block in the firewall.
Re: Go Daddy Files Patents for Enhanced Whois and DNS Records on Sunday September 27, 2009 @12:06AM (#846516)
First, patents related to software must die, asap.

Second, there is so much prior art on this, if it gets approved we know the patent office is on the take.

Re:JavaScript Pong (Spartan Ajax) on Saturday September 26, 2009 @10:21AM (#845483)
This is far more impressive, Chain Reaction (aka Boomshine) in javascript:

Re:Where US Oil comes from (Infographic) on Saturday September 26, 2009 @12:39AM (#845004)
So when do we invade Canada and "liberate the people" ?

Seriously though, isn't Canada's oil in shale and I thought that was the most expensive to produce?
