Re:Edit an SQLite database in your browser on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:23PM (#50307167)
I wonder if this is caused by so much of the training data is the web, where millions of articles were written to hit some word count. It's just following what it was trained on.
Re:Apple ML Research: Muse Spark Open with MLX on Mac Studio on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:58PM (#50121029)
They have been sold out of a lot of units, due to people developing AI, so apparently, it is significant.
Re:Fancy Curl Sites on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:22AM (#50115218)
Wait does this suggest that there are can be vulnerabilities in viewing a website in curl? I do this sometimes, when I want to check a website that I suspect might be malicious. There have been vulnerabilities associated with ANSI control codes, so I really DON'T want those to be included in a display.
Re:Marshall Islands Stick Chart on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:36PM (#50095682)
Now, that's fascinating. Posts like this is why I started reading hacker news.
Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:29PM (#50095599)
Good advice. As someone for whom this is currently relevant, let me add "find a support group".

At least, if it's a common cancer, a group will gather accumulated wisdom and can research better than a single person.

Also, they can help more with practical questions, like financial aid, how to manage sleep and pain, etc.

Nothing!

Keep up the good work

Re:IBM Finds 400 Vulnerabilities on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @06:29PM (#49999639)
IBM and Red Hat announced today they have identified and remediated more than 400 previously unknown vulnerabilities across popular Java libraries.
Re:DevDay 2026 Recap on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @06:19PM (#49901547)
They have to stop subsidizing at some point!

And they still aren't there, I bet.

> It's a browser view of the Solar System at real scale

Is it really? I don't think you could see the satellites, if they weren't drawn at 1000x scale. I am wrong?

At real scale, i would expect to not see anything.

They mention this event has only happened handful of times.

This seems unsupported. More likely is it's happened a large number of times, but has only established a lineage a handful of times.

"somewhat expensive when comparing to other models of similar price"?

That says something about your selected range, and nothing about the model.

Re:Aging may be a program, not a breakdown on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @01:44PM (#49805259)
In biology, there are always many causes, of course.

I wonder if people are familiar with the hypothesis of parasite-driven aging.

Parasites are vastly more prevalent than most people in modern, sanitary, medicated societies realize. Studies show that over half the biomass in a region may be parasitic.

Parasite frequently keep the host alive, but inhibit reproduction. This leaves the host alive, and competing with healthy members of its species for resources, but no capable longer reproducing. It's evolutionary dead weight.

Death is basically "turning it off and on again", just as you would do with a computer, and for very similar reasons. It clears the accumulated parasites and starts fresh.

This would also help explain why death is strongly conserved.

Re:Human brain is two separate organs, research finds on Friday September 18, 2026 @11:16AM (#49755611)
Seems to be based on the Stanford article: https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2026/09/two-separate-...
Verifying the ID is correct without verifying that it matches the human carrying kind of misses the whole point of an ID.
Re:Benchmark: CadQuery vs. OpenSCAD for agentic CAD work on Saturday September 12, 2026 @05:03PM (#49677171)
Maybe not for you, but I'm building miniatures for custom board games. Works great.
Re:Benchmark: CadQuery vs. OpenSCAD for agentic CAD work on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:49PM (#49677041)
I've been just getting started on this with Astra. Astra is one-shotting good 3D models from photographs for me. I was unable to get Sol to do this, even after multiple rounds.

It's not a small change, it's from "not useful" to "pretty good"

Re:My practical approach to surfing the web safely on Monday September 07, 2026 @07:32PM (#49604131)
Just run your browser in a non-persistent VM.
> "The findings identified an unintended opening of the vent valve

How do they figure things like this out, after a rocket goes "boom"?

Re:Stopping the smart TV from being used against you on Friday August 28, 2026 @04:59PM (#49484188)
They are likely going to have access. Lots of things have built in cellular modems these days, and your cable provider already uses your cable modem as a hotspot for other people.

You can do things like physically modifying your TV, or seeing if there are undocumented settings to disable things.

I have no idea what 'the orange cloud icon' means, as I'm not a CloudFlare used.

But DNS/Name servers do not see HTML traffic, as the above poster mentioned, so it's not obvious how this change would matter.

Is it that they are serving their HTML via CloudFlare, and cloudflare is making changing in its serving of their html?

Have you tried YouTube recently?

Simply FINDING good media becomes the problem. I have no interest in AI slop, but it's everywhere.

I don't choose to consume bad media, but finding good media is getting harder and harder.

Good ol' Varth Dader. A completely novel villain.
On the spectrum or go gentle vs fight, I'd have to say, now is the time is history where "fight" makes the most sense.

This is not abstract for me. I have not one, but two forms of cancer.

Both were considered incurable when I was diagnosed.

Both have treatments now that, IN SOME PEOPLE, lead to remission.

I still don't know which group I am, but I'd be dead from either one by now, if I hadn't elected to treat.

New treatments, for SOME cancers are literally coming out monthly.

So the fact that you can't be cured today, does mean there won't be a better treatment by next year, if you can hang on.

I should find out soon on my more aggressive one. Either way, I plan on continuing to try.

Yeah. I'm gonna have an LLM rewrite Star Wars and then film it. Should be fine, right?
Re:I Changed My Name on Thursday July 09, 2026 @08:02PM (#48854133)
I knew two hyphenates who got married. They picked one non-hyphenated last name.
Re:I Changed My Name on Thursday July 09, 2026 @08:00PM (#48854120)
I find this follow on article really helpful: https://shinesolutions.com/2018/01/08/falsehoods-programmers...

It contains concrete examples of each of the ideas listed in the first article.

Re:Home made GPU escalated quickly [video] on Thursday July 09, 2026 @12:03AM (#48840846)
That's cool. Thanks for the info
Re:I think I have LLM burnout on Thursday July 09, 2026 @12:01AM (#48840831)
I get burnout from frustration when the LLM just can't follow instructions.

Like when I'm trying to get it to create an image, and the first pass is beautiful, but ten different request to modify it, with different phrasing and even example images, produce the same image ten times. Or when you tell it not to use a cheap hack in AGENTS.md about six different ways and in your prompt, and it still does it again, and again.

It's like arguing with an idiot. And THAT gives me burnout.

Also: I've never once seen an emoji in LLM output. What are people talking about?

Re:Home made GPU escalated quickly [video] on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @12:54PM (#48834317)
Not an area I'm familiar with, but do the chips really handle up in the gigabit IO? I thought they just handle connection setup. I had thought the gigabytes were not processed at all by the chips. They just flow through the wires.
