Asimov's laws of robotics and Herbert's Dune foreshadowed the troubles we are facing now and have been largely ignored. It appears fiction does nothing to guide us when it comes to technology; no matter how prescient or widely read. Consider this when writing your idealist drivel.

>after writing all this, I think these categories are a lot more about "what got you into this" rather than what you actually end up doing in this space.

>Nevertheless, my point here was to show a few of the ideas and directions I've been considering, and I'm keen to hear from others what you're thinking about too.

I decided to study computer science in college as a hopeful 18 year old who wanted to learn how video games work and maybe work for a development studio. I needed to find a job right after college, and I ended up going the full stack route. 10 years later (now) I'm working remote, making decent salary, but never fulfilled my original purpose for studying computer science. What's gonna happen to this software engineer? Anecdotally, I'll ride my IT job as long as I can while using AI to learn about game development.

Appreciate the author mentioning Thoreau. I would also include Bertrand Russell who wrote "The Conquest of Happiness". Highly recommended read. I made a blog post of my favorite excerpt: https://www.twinsandthecrab.com/2021/12/quote-from-conquest-...

Agreed, it's possible to still like programming as a hobby despite its commodification in the larger scheme of things. Ycombinator in a nutshell.

Dissent from who, Mastodon? Brother, Mastodon the entity cannot intervene by design. Different admins run each instance and they decide who is excluded. This doesn't go against federated system; it's the system at work.

You don't sound lost, but you do sound bored. Dive into a non work related hobby. If I was rich and married I'd do as much as I can to learn, teach, and collect art. None of us would be able to tell you what is important to you.

I've been using the same cloud gpu service as well for about 2 months. It's able to run on Manjaro installed through snap. The service picks up input pretty well, including audio from your mic, but like the author said it will depend on the speed of your internet connection. The audio/video resolution will adjust so sometimes it looks and sounds like a 480p youtube video. It has been very pleasant to use for a city-building game I enjoy playing. I'm more inclined to try other sim-like games since I don't have to worry about storage. It uses Steam and other game marketplace accounts to check if you own the games you want to play. It may not be good for multiplayer games like cs:go or dota; I've been disconnected from a match and since the game is running on cloud I'm still "connected" in-game appearing as afk.

Overall, I've been pleased with the service and plan to use it on a laptop for an upcoming vacation. Of course, nothing beats having a bare-metal GPU. I don't play as much as I used to anymore, so it's definitely a viable service for people who are sunsetting their interest in video games and do not want to pay for a gaming rig.

seconding this. sustainable power and minimal, human-centric tech is the future.

Re:Ask HN: Fiction about Introverts? on Sunday November 21, 2021 @08:42PM (#29301782)
Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse (who also wrote Siddhartha) deals directly with a scholar who struggles with human interaction until he falls for a mysterious woman in a jazz bar. The first half of the book details internal suffering and can be a bit heavy, but the second half is filled with good dialogue about protagonist pushing through his understanding of himself.
Re:The intellectual incoherence of cryptoassets on Sunday November 07, 2021 @05:02PM (#29143927)
>And finally there’s the claim that crypto assets are like art. Essentially Satoshi’s whitepaper is a piece of performance art split into 21 million pieces as a parody of hypercapitalism or to make a political statement about anarcho-capitalism.

Isn't this a misunderstanding on the author's part? The claim that some crypto assets are treated as 'art' is not as a performance piece of Satoshi's work, but in form of NFTs on OpenSea (as an example) that utilize Ethereum as the exchange platform.

Twitch put it succinctly here:

>Prohibiting every form of content that could be interpreted as suggestive would also result in far more restrictions on the video games and premium content that we currently allow, especially considering the ways that female characters are sometimes objectified or presented in a sexualized manner.

Re:Our experience with the Fediverse, and why we left on Sunday January 24, 2021 @04:36PM (#25896335)
Most of the points they elaborated on are People problems, not Mastodon problems. The genuine critiques of Mastodon they listed are migration issues, updating posts (it makes sense 'edited' posts lose their clout), and character limit (already way bigger than twitter's).

Also, aren't they falling into their own "Us vs. Them" argument by complaining about general Mastodon users?

>I think they're just trying to be the trendsetters so they can have the most control of it when decentralized social networks take off.

Nope. Dorsey has stated he wants twitter to be a client of an open standard https://twitter.com/jack/status/1204766078468911106

It is in Twitter's favor to hand moderation to community admins. The "trendsetters" already have millions of users on their decentralized platforms https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/twitter.modular...

The likely scenario is they create a modified version of an existing protocol, and manage a large client instance of that protocol (e.g. mastodon.social). Users will be free to host their own twitter server, so to speak, and twitter will have no control over those instances.

Imagine for a second these comments but for an article praising productivity while working from home.
The error here is comparing an upper middle class life of a software developer to that of banks and tech billionaires. You mentioned you have relatively high income, so aren't you and your family's needs met? Everyone wants to retire early, everyone would like a nice sum of cash fast. Perhaps it is worth exploring not increasing income, but decreasing expenditures and living more simply.

EDIT: like others have said here, money is a side effect of a passion. It is not an end in itself, unless you take up business and finance careers.

Re:Ask HN: Which online communities do you hang out most on? on Thursday October 17, 2019 @08:01PM (#21287480)
Many of my friends use Twitter and we regularly comment on and retweet each other's tweets. I've recently been added to a Mastodon group which feels much more tight-knit. I've been playing dota 2 for the past few years and I regularly play with the same group of people. I also have a few discords I've been added to. I tend to lurk on bigger websites like Twitter, Reddit, HN. Last.fm and Sonemic community are interesting in that they're entirely music based. The discussion revolves entirely around rating and categorizing music which is lovely if you think about it.

Further in the article they mentioned telescopes have to be placed certain distances apart to calculate differences in radio wave arrival by billionths of a second. These differences gives them granular placement within the galaxy (I'm assuming the analogy is referring to arms, stars, planets, etc.)
Re:Facebook, Libra, and the Long Game on Tuesday June 25, 2019 @11:48AM (#20275398)
The missing information here is how much of this currency will belong to facebook, and to each constituent. No matter how many orgs are added to the coalition, if facebook owns 50% of the coin then it's all a sham.
